Doing an online Tesco shop and I actually feel suicidal

HowDee · 25/03/2023 14:49

Granted I have MH anyways. Anxiety, depression, PTSD as well as physical illnesses.

Every month it just goes up. Tesco own brand potato waffles used to be £1,

Last month they were £1.60 now they're £1.85

A bag of tescos own fries are £2.50 now.

I don't have the fucking money to pay more for EVERYTHING. Rents gone up. Gas, electric.

I put the heating on TWICE over winter. Twice.

I've just shut the app crying because I'm just so sick of it all.

Where do they think we can get the money from? Where?? For everything going up?

And before you tell me off for buying frozen fries and waffles my child has ARFID and autism and has a very select amount of things she will eat.

Does your child know by taste alone or is it packaging related?

We used to be able to get way with giving the "wrong" ready salted crisps if we dumped them in the "right" bag out of sight... can you rebox imposter waffles??

Sausages we couldn't fake unfortunately.

iloveeverykindofcat · 25/03/2023 17:59

@ADHDVet I'm so sorry to hear you were hit 😢

To be honest it probably wasn't as much of a punishment for me as it would be for a NT kid. I was alright sitting in silence - I was thinking!

Fifi1010 · 25/03/2023 18:02

It is thing , I have really over sensitive taste and can instantly taste if it's not a particular brand. I know someone with ASD who will only eat uncle Ben's mexican rice as they can tell the budget alternatives aren't the same.

MistyFrequencies · 25/03/2023 18:02

@HowDee im so sorry. No help but i understand. Im ok for money and also did a Tesco online shop today then had to go back through basket twice to eliminate enough items to bring it down to budget. Also with an Autistic kid with severely restricted eating. Its fucking shit. You have my sympathy.

TomeTome · 25/03/2023 18:04

Ds is a selective eater. Like your dd OP he won’t tolerate a brand change (he has other diagnosis too). I think you need DLA which would cover your food bill for dd and just remove a lot of stress from your lives. You don’t need a diagnosis but you will need proof of “need”. Your GP will be asked about any assessments you have had or are waiting for. In the meantime I’d work out exactly what it costs to feed her as one of the positives is that you can predict a lot.

AfraidToRun · 25/03/2023 18:08

This thread is so upsetting. I had a very severe ED and one of the biggest contributions was growing up in poverty and knowing that food cost us money that we didn't have. Had f all to do with my appearance or celebrities or whatever people think EDs are about. How many children are going to suffer now and have the same issues I did?

I know people like this. They don't all have ASD just a really sensitive palette. It's really annoying.

Is there a way you can receive Clubcard vouchers from another person? I only have about £4 sitting but I’d be happy to send you the code.

usernamechanged1 · 25/03/2023 18:19

RE the last message. I just checked and it’s £4.50. Drop me a PM if you want the code and we’ll hopefully be able to use it!

ADHDVet · 25/03/2023 16:34

I meant to say I have ASD @HowDee
I was the same, multiple hospital stays because my parents served things I couldn’t eat. I’d cry and then be belted by my dad whilst I was gagging and throwing up in my mouth.

it’s really good you have some wriggle room with some brands. I ate only one brand of bread (and only the crust) for almost 3 years.

I hope the Iceland shop works out for you

@ADHDVet
that made me cry, you poor little thing. I just want to pick you up & give you a cuddle. (The child you obviously!!)

Do you have any contact with your parents now?

I get there wasn't the understand years ago, but that was never an acceptable way to treat a child.

duvet · 25/03/2023 18:20

Also hate shopping now - Muffins in Morrison used to 45p then last month 65p today 99p! Everything going up and portions of items smaller! Crazy!

This is what people who voted Tory, voted for.

Oh give it a rest.

try helping the occasional OP instead of posting these useless comments. There are plenty of political threads if you want to go on about it.

It's difficult shopping around because I don't drive and have a tesco deliver saver monthly.

Cancel the Tesco deliver saver monthly and sign up with a cheaper supermarket?

NoDrinksForMe · 25/03/2023 18:28

OP, I have no advice on your daughter's food issues/the food shop, and you seem to have gotten lots of that already.
Are you getting any help for your MH? I work for a charity that offers v cheap counselling to everyone, although there is a waiting list of 4-6 months depending on area. Do you have anything like that around you? Have you been to your GP re your MH? I'm just wondering what support you have in that area, although I know it wasn't the main intention of your post.

It sounds like you're doing a fab job in a very tricky situation 💐

Mamamia7962 · 25/03/2023 18:30

usernamechanged1 - I don't think you can use someone else's clubcard vouchers as the code is linked to the clubcard number.

Lifeomars · 25/03/2023 18:35

I just want to say that my heart goes out to you, when I am doing my shopping I always think about how on earth people with children are managing to feed and clothe them in the current climate. I am retired and have been hit hard by the cost of living crisis but it is only me, it must be so draining and disheartening to dealing with the never ending rising prices. I used to donate to my local food bank but can no longer afford to do so, I often wonder what the impact is on food banks, with rising demand and shrinking donations.

Quitelikeit · 25/03/2023 18:36

definitely apply for DLA you don’t need a diagnosis you just have to talk through your daily struggles - however if they are restricted to eating only then they may not award you

Could you use a local food bank? Obviously that won’t help with your dd but it might save you some cash

I think even Iceland is expensive now! Bargains are hard to find!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 25/03/2023 18:39

The price rises are astonishing, I can't help but wonder if there is a big element of opportunistic profiteering going on.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 25/03/2023 18:40

Can you buy cheaper brands and put them in the packaging of the brands she likes, or would she catch on to that?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 25/03/2023 18:44

I spend the same amount i always spend but I had just 3 trays delivered. For that money I used to get maybe 5/6 trays. I always say “is that it?” because I am genuinely expecting more trays.

D20 · 25/03/2023 18:44

ive noticed the price rises too. I upped our weekly budget and then upped it again a few weeks later. My heart goes out to you but it is not a failing on your part OP. I’m actually really annoyed at the profits Tesco et al are making.

Lachimolala · 25/03/2023 18:52

I feel the same OP. It’s soul destroying isn’t it. What is the world coming to when I can no longer shop in Asda despite working full time and pulling in a decent wage.

What with the gas and elec increases, yet another rent increase, food prices soaring and childcare I’ve just got nothing left. In fact I’ve often got not enough and have to pick and choose what’s late or not paid in full.

It’s an absolute joke, the government could step in and protect us but of course they won’t.

I’m sick of trying to convince myself it has to get better at some point. I don’t believe it anyway.

UB40andaglassofwine · 25/03/2023 15:29

Arfid isn't picky eating. It's an eating disorder

And like other eating disorders it can be treated and can become less severe.

A friend's son ate only chips, plain white rice, chocolate buttons and oranges for 12 whole years but by his late teens this slowly changed and he now eats quite a variety of foods.
