Doing an online Tesco shop and I actually feel suicidal

HowDee · 25/03/2023 14:49

Granted I have MH anyways. Anxiety, depression, PTSD as well as physical illnesses.

Every month it just goes up. Tesco own brand potato waffles used to be £1,

Last month they were £1.60 now they're £1.85

A bag of tescos own fries are £2.50 now.

I don't have the fucking money to pay more for EVERYTHING. Rents gone up. Gas, electric.

I put the heating on TWICE over winter. Twice.

I've just shut the app crying because I'm just so sick of it all.

Where do they think we can get the money from? Where?? For everything going up?

And before you tell me off for buying frozen fries and waffles my child has ARFID and autism and has a very select amount of things she will eat.

I have just done the same. Fresh meat is incredibly expensive. Removed the chicken thighs from my basket....

Icecreamandapplepie · 25/03/2023 14:51

I'm so sorry, its awful.

PermanentTemporary · 25/03/2023 14:52

That's extremely tough. When I think of the incredible profits the energy companies have made, the subsidies they benefit from and their refusal to pass on the savings, I do feel so angry.

A big hug to you. Please don't turn the anger on yourself. X

MaireadMcSweeney · 25/03/2023 14:53

I know. I thought I was doing a small shop in Lidl and it came in at £80 no alcohol or meat included. That amount of food used to be no more than £50.
I'm sorry you're feeling so bad. Do you meal plan so you don't have to get anything you don't absolutely need for the week?
at least energy costs will come down now it's getting warmer. Will that ease anything?

SmartestGiantInCity · 25/03/2023 14:54

Try Iceland. Their waffles are £1.25 or birds eye four for a fiver so same price. Free delivery if you spend £40.

HowDee · 25/03/2023 14:57

Obviously I'm not going to do myself in over a food shop but it's the pressure of everything.

What's it going to be like in six months? £3 for waffles

I already can't afford chicken dippers now. One of the very small amount of things my kid will eat gone. I felt like such a failure.

I know, it’s getting harder and harder. Once you’re already buying own and value brands there’s nowhere left to cut.

it’s exhausting trudging around the supermarket picking things up and putting things back. Things that used to seem like economy dinners are now luxuries (soup, baked beans)

Nsky62 · 25/03/2023 14:58

You are not failing, maybe you can get stuff cheaper elsewhere

MynameisJune · 25/03/2023 14:58

I find Tesco super expensive now, similar to M&S and Waitrose in price.

Shopping around is cheaper but appreciate that’s harder if you don’t drive and can’t get to the shops alone.

Lindy2 · 25/03/2023 14:59

I spent £60 on a food shop the other day. When I unpacked it my DD said "Where's the rest of it?" There was such a small amount of things in the bag. ☹️

Moveforward · 25/03/2023 15:01

Will your child make things themselves and eat them? I was given a waffle maker last week and had fun making some (albeit sweet not potato waffle).

No her condition means she only eats specific things. Specific brands too. I don't know how she knows the difference but she does, it's like the lamest super power ever 😂

It's difficult shopping around because I don't drive and have a tesco deliver saver monthly.

It's a bummer, OP. Absolutely soul destroying, week in week out.

Are you dependent on Tesco, due to distance / delivery?

It really is pretty expensive there now relative to some of the items available at shops like Iceland, as pp said. Can you can get to other shops or receive a delivery from them? Maybe posters can help a bit with ideas. E.g. Asda Essentials chips are currently £1 a bag and taste fine and 'normal' - but obviously (a) you have to have access to an Asda, and (b) if shopping online, they have to be available.

SchoolTripDrama · 25/03/2023 15:06

See if you can switch to Aldi. It's astonishingly cheaper.
I completely get the ARFID & Autism thing though, my DD is exactly the same. Her meals now are Heinz Macaroni Cheese (must be Heinz!) frozen chips & tinned, sliced carrots ☹️
All that mashing up single vegetables like the books said to do, introducing one flavour at a time when she was a baby, all a total waste of time! I worked so so hard to try get her to have a healthy diet, only for this to happen.

Anyway, I sympathise. I do most of my shopping at Aldi then go to Asda for the basket full of Heinz macaroni (that was fun in lockdown when I was regularly accused of stock piling when I was only buying a weeks' worth!

Sirzy · 25/03/2023 15:06

As the mother of a child with arfid I feel your pain. Even things like his apples have shot up in price and I can’t bulk buy them in advance!

his ice cream is on club card price this week (which is still more expensive than it was a few months back) so I am stocking up on them while I can.

owiz · 25/03/2023 15:06

I'm sorry OP, I'm not going to give advice as it sounds like you need to vent and commiserate rather than hear things I'm sure you already know. It's utterly shit, it's unfair, fingers crossed it will calm down by the end of the year and some improvement in wages/benefits will hopefully come soon to reduce the gap somewhat.

gogohmm · 25/03/2023 15:08

I know it's easy to say from a computer but persevere with the foods, my dd was down to a handful of foods but I refused to give in continuing to serve a varied diet and by teenage years she ate relatively ok, still picky but nothing like when she only ate chicken nuggets and chips without tears. It took hours of sitting at the table refusing to let her get down but for her own health it is necessary.

Lidl is better value

I'm a member of this group on FB. Lots of help and peer support with Arfid. And we share tips about who's doing deals on popular beige food.

Apologies and I'm saying this as kindly as I can but ARFID is not picky eating. It doesn't work like that. That worked with my other children who went through phases of picky eating. This is different, it's a condition, not an attitude issue.

That’s not going to work with a child who has Autism
if I did that to my boys ,…well I just wouldn’t because the consequences would be dreadful,

OP do you claim dla for your child? Might take the pressure off you to fund the foods they will eat x

If you have a farmfoods near you they do huge packs of chicken dipper/ tender things it's in plain packaging nothing fancy my DH got 2kg for £11 he loves the things and says it tastes like a takeaway 😳😳

Fifi1010 · 25/03/2023 15:19

Also the chips in farmfoods own brand waffles and fries very reasonable.
