For financial reasons (I'm broke and have to save) I have made a deal with myself to stop my frivolous style and beauty spending for 2018.

I will only be purchasing necessities as they run out (like cleanser) or replacements for laddered tights etc. I will take myself off mailing lists so I'll have no idea when there are any offers or discounts.

I will use my imagination and pinterest to create looks and outfits without accumulating more stuff to clutter my room and my mind!

Is anyone inteseted in joining in?

Here's to a style and beauty debt free 2018 Halo

Count me in. I spent way too much last year on clothes, shoes and perfume. Essential replacements only for me in 2018. Ebay deleted - it is my absolute nemesis. All those cheap things add up...

I dropped three dress sizes last year, so did need some new things, but I actually already had a wardrobe full of things I'd expanded out of to shrink back in to. I'm hoping to drop another couple of sizes this year, at which point I'll have to shop, but I could save up ready for when that day comes.

pasturesgreen · 02/01/2018 17:17

Joining in! So much of what I've read so far resonates with me.
The more traditional frugal threads didn't really work for me as my weakness are S&B purchases and books, I don't particularly need to cut down in other areas of my life.

I can definitely relate to the thrill of seeing the perfect dress/top/bag/whatever online and just having to have it. However, I'm rubbish at sending back stuff I'm not 100% in love with, so the house is groaning under the weight of stuff. I have clothes with the tags still attached, unopened high end make up, unread books, you name it...It's actually borderline obscene and I could do with just rediscovering with I have.

It'll be baby steps, though. No point committing to going completely cold turkey as I know I won't be able to keep it up. First step is no spend on makeup and beauty products for the month of January. I have enough lipstick, eyeshadow and face cream to see me through a nuclear war.

I will also cut down on buying books. I got "Crabwalk" today from Amazon as I'd wanted it for a very long time, but after that I'll try and concentrate on getting through the pile at my bedside before buying anything new.

There is a beautiful grey tailored wool dress. Exactly my size and measurements. 19 40s vintage. One of my 3 favourite designers from that era.

I will not succumb! The beauty of vintage is that it is unique so someone should buy it soon and then my problem will disappear!

PollyShelbyLifeCoachServices · 02/01/2018 21:08

Will catch up on thread tomorrow AM with a brew, resisted charity shop shoes today, got three bags of nice stuff to donate that we dont use, i love the refashionista type threads, gives me some great ideas.

Callamia · 02/01/2018 21:18

I’m in. Although I assume I can still buy a new moisturiser when mine runs out very shortly?

Before the new year, I spent stupid money on a new pair of trousers and a skirt, and when they arrive, and if they fit ok - then I’m absolutely not buying new clothes. I do need to get some altered, and I am more than happy to set up a swaps group for size 8/10 stuff.

ShoopShoop · 02/01/2018 21:28

I'm in too if it's ok to join. Saw you over on the S&B board before Christmas and have been lurking ever since....thought it was about time to come out of hiding.

I have so many clothes yet still buy something new every month. I need to lose weight and am not exactly happy with the way I look, so I think the clothes buying is a way of trying to look and feel better....I still look like a matronly sack of spuds though!

I have a pretty boring senior job in London and am quite outward facing a lot of the time with meeting external people etc.....but that said I should still have enough "smart" and normal office clothes to last the year.

I'd really love to develop a "signature style" but at the grand old age of 34 I still haven't found it yet. I love COS clothes but whopping norks and being on the short side of 5ft 4 means I'm not sure COS clothes love me back.

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. 2 days in and no spends on clothes. Also avoided the post Christmas sales so pleased with progress so far....

PollyShelbyLifeCoachServices · 03/01/2018 16:15

Well done resisting Shoop..
I am the same was a size 10 when I went swimming 4 times a week, relocated 240 miles away and it took 8 months to get a job so I have put a stone on learning to cook properly, so I like my body but it needs toning, hence starting to exercise daily rather than spending on clothes to conceal :) I finally gave up and thanked my size 10 H&M beloved black skinny jeans (4 pairs of) to the charity shop today. Hopefully I will use up what is in my wardrobe now. NSD here! Hooray!

caggie09 · 03/01/2018 17:16

Three days in and ive not bought anythingGrin😂
Ordered from SpaceNk before xmas as they had a sale on. I only spent £30, got an email today to say its out of stock so i will get a refund. Instead of finding something else to buy with the £30, its going straight into my savings account when it comes through. Otherwise ill see it as ''spare money'' and spend it on stuff i do not need!

Missionocrity · 03/01/2018 18:42

Survived Boots yesterday, bought razors and mascara (a cheap £4.99 Rimmel job) and managed to resist face creams/half price sale toiletries/body creams that are on offer.

I did a huge clothing purge on NYE, 3 bags to the charity shop. It feels really nice knowing that everything in my wardrobe fits and that I like it!

Gah81 · 03/01/2018 19:28

Had to spend £10 when I picked up my dry-cleaning today.

Ah well, I couldn't have left it there for the whole month as they get rid of anything that hasn't been collected after 28 days! 😂😂

IMissGin · 03/01/2018 22:32

Say 3 and no purchases. I even went into my favourite boutique today to return a faulty dress and didn’t look at the rails. Any of them, not even the sale ones.

Underparmummy · 04/01/2018 11:36

Im in! No Shopping for clothes (ANY) is on my NY resolution list. I just don't need anymore clothes. Nothing could wear out and break that I wouldn't have a replacement for.

Heck, I might even wear some of it more than once a year this way.

Also need to clear some cc debt by doing this. Then I am going to move to investment purchases only (hopefully always in sales too!).

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 04/01/2018 13:20

This is a great start! I've become hooked on listening to podcasts over the last few days. A whole new world is being opened up to me! I haven't bothered looking at clothes online at all Grin

I keep focusing on what I actually have already which is proving to be more fun. 2018 will be the year I make use of my existing wardrobe rather than buying more stuff.

I'm reading with interest about those of you who are culling and scaling back and doing no spend (double commitment!)

Good luck everyone!

Today I had to go buy a few pet bits, managed to avoid buying cat toys which I'm proud of. Made it out of boots with just the cough medicine I went in for and my lunch.
Only thing failed at was when I went to fetch a storage box and bought some 70% off baubles. I'm in work every day now until next Friday so there are no chances for me to spend money I don't have.
Also moving onto cash only until my next payday

Underparmummy · 05/01/2018 08:34

I went into a lovely farm shop with all kinds of extras and bought 2 limes! In cash!

ToothTrauma · 05/01/2018 10:07

Everyone is doing so well!

I haven’t spent a bean on style and beauty despite being sorely tempted by products featured in YouTube videos. MY 2017-purchased eyeshadows arrived I’m having fun playing with those.

caggie09 · 05/01/2018 13:00

Oops, im not doing that well. Spent £9 on a hair brushBlush. Will no be buying anything else beauty related this month now. That can be my treat for the month!

PavlovaPlease · 05/01/2018 14:25

Replacement shampoo as can't really do without that and don't have a stash to use up, plus a hair mask as mine is so horrible. £3.50 because of a multibuy with the shampoo.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 05/01/2018 17:32

I've just re-read the thread and would like to say I am sorry for your loss Vitaminc Flowers

Day 6th the new year and so far things are going well. Sort of, as I'm itching to buy something, but have managed to be restrained. Went for a mooch round the shops yesterday as I was having withdrawal symptoms, managed to come away empty handed. God, that's hard going...

Missionocrity · 06/01/2018 13:27

Well done for resisting pasturesgreen, I’m full of the cold so chilling at home and filled up a shopping basket online at Zara then remembered the challenge and deleted it all.

I’ve started to work my way through my cosmetics hoard- I’ll never need to buy handcream or lip balm again at this rate!

Hope everyone else is doing well! I’ve decided I save my receipts too this month so I can see exactly where my money goes!

ShoopShoop · 07/01/2018 23:44

I have a Sandqvist backpack in my ASOS basket....I keep justifying it to myself that I NEED it and it will make my commute to work SO much easier.

It won't.

Still hard to walk away though. I'm hopeless!!

Gah81 · 08/01/2018 09:00

Well, I earned £150 selling some clothes. Was really pleased! Then of course I saw a vintage dress from one of my favourite 1940s designers, in one of my favourite colours, so spent the £150 this morning!

They cancel each other out nicely but not sure it is in keeping with no spend January!

ememem84 · 08/01/2018 09:14

Hello. Can I join?

I’m currently on maternity leave - back to work in May. I do not need any more clothes shoes beauty products.

My maternity pay runs out in February. So I must only spend on essentials (or with gift vouchers).

I’m trying to use up the beauty products I have before buying new and am going to have a rummage in the wardrobe, charity shop/eBay some things and save the cash instead of spending it on new clothes I don’t need.

So far in 2018 zero clothes spends.

SandysMam · 08/01/2018 10:30

Was desperate for a night cream as my skin was really dry...so have splashed out £1.69 on Aldi Lacura
Q10. It seems really nice so far but I can usually only be sure if a cream will work for me after a week or so due to easily clogged pores. Still...if it does, it is a massive saving from my usual Clinique!
