For financial reasons (I'm broke and have to save) I have made a deal with myself to stop my frivolous style and beauty spending for 2018.

I will only be purchasing necessities as they run out (like cleanser) or replacements for laddered tights etc. I will take myself off mailing lists so I'll have no idea when there are any offers or discounts.

I will use my imagination and pinterest to create looks and outfits without accumulating more stuff to clutter my room and my mind!

Is anyone inteseted in joining in?

Here's to a style and beauty debt free 2018 Halo

I need to do a no spend January (or at least until payday on the 25th) Then a cash budget for the rest of the year.

Aph413 · 30/12/2017 11:30

Payday is the 2nd January. I've looked at my amounts in and out for the past year and it's ridiculous. I've cut up my credit card and every spare penny is going into savings and paying it off. It's hard to decide how quickly to pay it off. Ideally I could pay it in 10 months but I could also use that money to get rid of my car finance.
I think credit card is more sensible

Ohhi123 · 30/12/2017 12:51

Yeah concentrate on getting the credit card paid and over with first I think. I have £600 left on my credit card so I'm planing on paying 150 each month. Essentially, as i plan on putting £360 a month in my savings account I could have put that towards my credit card and pay it off sooner BUT I have stuff to save for. So I think £150 a month is fine and ideally I'll have it paid off by the end of April!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/12/2017 15:44

Ohh soon be 2018 so here goes:

On the plus side:
I don't like online shopping so that's in my favour.
I have cut right down on QVC (they are good for make-up / toilettries but less so clothes, their P&P is high too)

I like Tu Sainsburys for tops (long on the arms , not too short/boxy)
I have a jumper weakness and not fussy where I buy them. Woollovers, Uniqlo, Primark, M&S. But when they start to go a bit cack, they get recycled (I wash them all in lingerie bags to stop them stretching and I have Woolovers that are 4-5 years old now)

I have enough coats and 'm not a shoe fan so when I do buy some its because I need them not just want them.

This years sales (Black Fri) DD got a coat and some joggers that were wayyy ££ but reduced and TBF she has worn them loads .

I bought some fleece tops for DS and a couple of jackets (he's not into clothes so he's fairly laid back )

I buy bras from Primark, they need to have good wide straps and at least 2-3 hook/eyes. I wear a fresh one daily and machine wash (so they don't last long really) but at that price meh.

I wear a Uniform for work (saves too much thinking in the morning)

I have my new Spends Diary waiting , just need to update the 2017 one and start afresh Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/12/2017 15:45

Oh and I don't have a credit card in my purse , it lives somewhere safe only used for online purchases like the tumble drier last month.

FiveShelties · 01/01/2018 07:38

Happy New Year to all, may all your spends be small or essential!😀

MuseumOfCurry · 01/01/2018 07:58

Excellent idea. I feel almost ready to do this, because I've pared my wardrobe pretty ruthlessly and I have something almost like a capsule wardrobe -

but

I need some shoes first.

PavlovaPlease · 01/01/2018 08:45

I'm in (the only exception will be if I get a new job as I will need some work clothes)

ToothTrauma · 01/01/2018 09:14

Right. It begins.

Going to organise my enormous skincare and makeup hoard today. I’ve piles and piles. I got a load for Christmas —quite a lot of which I bought myself— and certainly DO NOT need any more.

I did buy a small eyeshadow palette online last night. Before the bell tolled Grin I’ve literally no eyeshadows left for some reason and have been considering the purchase for a long while. It was measured and decided rationally. But that’s it now.

Clothes-wise I’m certainly ok until spring. Lots of nice jumpers and things. Going on hols (to somewhere cold) in Feb and need to NOT buy a load of stuff for that.

Wishing everyone a happy and reasonable new year!

Rollerbird · 01/01/2018 09:34

Im getting in here.
I love spending far too much.
I have enough clothes
Ive bought the bargain all saints leather Ive coveted (in 2017)
It's 2018 so only buy if it runs or wears out!

Methenyouplus4 · 01/01/2018 09:50

Last night I bought a pair of heels I didn't need on ebay so rather annoyed at myself.

I also bought a bra (need) but not been delivered yet and a long summer skirt to replace one I bought 5 years ago but split up the seam. It was only from Primarc (was actually bought post baby as a solution for that interim period while you loose baby weight) but elastic waist meant I still wore it every summer. Bought one fro People Tree so ethically made and hopefully better quality. I'm going to really give it a good going over before I decide if I want to keep it though as want to focus on quality of pieces and not just 'does it fit/look okay'.

Other than list of about 4 items I posted earlier and crimbo money, I want to get to June with no spend so I can evaluate again.

IMissGin · 01/01/2018 09:56

I’m in! Not just s&b but anything.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 01/01/2018 16:34

Happy New Year everyone. Welcome to this thread's new home in Credit Crunch.

I tried not to spend last year and failed abysmally. So this year I mean it! It's been great that there are so many other people interested in doing this too.

This thread is for support and sharing tips. Judgy pants are not part of the dress code.

Ohhi I'm the same as you, I'm late to join this but would really like to join everyone else. Been on Mumsnet a while SFAOkay/message to you tidy are my old names, mostly lurked /posted as and when but I too am buying basic only when I have run out/same with clothes food, everything.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 01/01/2018 19:31

IMissGin you're hard-core! Best of luck.

I am going to adopt your comment as a mantra for 2018 - thank you FiveShelties.

First things first, I'll have to be taken off email listings for all the online shopping I do (which is basically everything). For the last few days I've just been deleting the emails without reading them to avoid temptation.

I downloaded a podcast app on to my phone today, so instead of surfing online clothes shops I've been listening to comedy and history documentaries. It's been relaxing and refreshing!

I've been using online shopping to fill some emotional void but it has only led to deceit (hiding stuff from my DH) and a credit card bill that will take me months to clear. This hasn't made me happy but upped my stress levels - no surprise there.

I am going to stop being foolish and by the end of this year I want to have no cc debt and have actual savings for a rainy day!

GoodForgetter · 01/01/2018 19:45

Hello, can I join you?
Like a pp, I'm aiming for a no spending sort of a year full-stop, not just S&B.
The post about the excitement of the buying process really resonated with me - online shopping is my weakness and I am great at convincing myself I really need something.
Not letting myself buy something straight away was quite effective for a while but I really am a compulsive buyer and often find myself on eBay or Amazon just looking for something to buy 😳

I have a car I've had my eye in for a while so my goal is to save towards getting one of of those - whether I'll ever actually buy it or not is debatable, but it's a good goal to have I think. I've printed off a photo to keep in my purse with my cards - hopefully it'll help keep me on track!

Just off to remove all but one card from my purse ........

Good luck everybody x

Gah81 · 01/01/2018 20:09

I have found my people! Clothes are my weakness (vintage clothes to be precise).

Have removed instagram and put up little post-it notes to remind myself that I have enough clothes!

Missionocrity · 02/01/2018 08:31

Today I need to buy TWO things:

  1. Razors. I’m like the yeti woman.
  2. Mascara. Had to chuck the 2 I had out because I had an eye infection Sad

Other than that there will be no other spends this month, I’ve got loads of bath and shower stuff to use and tons of body lotions.

Good luck everyone!

PavlovaPlease · 02/01/2018 08:45

I've removed Instagram, sorted my stash of beauty products and am going to sort my wardrobe out today. I've got a few bits and pieces that I might try and sell and have started a savings envelope for new coat and boots so that I'm ready when needed - prob not til winter 2019 though! Think I said upthread it will be no spend unless I get a job as my current casual uniform won't cut it (I work now but in jeans and a T).

meep87 · 02/01/2018 09:05

Joining in! I managed no spend on clothes in 2016 (well, until December at least...) and definitely want to do it again.

All my sales purchases are arriving today, and after that I'll watch the documentary The True Cost again (definitely recommend if you want to be reminded of the ethical reasons for not shopping...) and hope to stick to true replacements and a little list of things I may actually need (shoes for work & a dress for a friend's wedding so far...)

grannycake · 02/01/2018 09:23

Joining in - I spend far too much on clothes but wear the same favourites again and again. I do need some smart black trousers for work but can't find any that I like at the moment

weebarra · 02/01/2018 09:26

I'm in. I do a lot of online shopping and especially Scandi clothes for the DCs. They really do not need any more. I'm about to unsubscribe from all my emails from retailers!

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 02/01/2018 15:25

I saw a grey cashmere scarf at 50% off (£25) in Tesco today whilst grocery shopping this morning. I averted my eyes & didn't buy it. Go me!

Rollerbird · 02/01/2018 16:11

Well done Appleblossom
Thats the sort of thing i would have been drawn to.
I really want a cashmere jumper too.
I dont need one..

ToothTrauma · 02/01/2018 16:22

Well I went through all my cosmetics and toiletries yesterday. I have the most shameful number of cleansers and toners/acids/peels. I shan’t need to buy anymore for a couple of years.

On the other hand I have no spare face cream Hmm so I went through my sample/travel size box which has all sorts. Found lots of face creams...and seventeen shower caps.

SEVENTEEN. From when DH used to travel a lot for work and I’d ask him to bring home any nice posh hotel toiletries. Apparently shower caps fitted in with that Grin Into the charity bag they go! Perhaps someone can make use...
