For financial reasons (I'm broke and have to save) I have made a deal with myself to stop my frivolous style and beauty spending for 2018.

I will only be purchasing necessities as they run out (like cleanser) or replacements for laddered tights etc. I will take myself off mailing lists so I'll have no idea when there are any offers or discounts.

I will use my imagination and pinterest to create looks and outfits without accumulating more stuff to clutter my room and my mind!

Is anyone inteseted in joining in?

Here's to a style and beauty debt free 2018 Halo

I'm another who tried in 2017 and will have more resolve next year! I started reasonably well, but it started to go downhill when I have myself permission to buy things only from charity shops, or yarn to make things for myself. I also found myself vicariously splurging on clothes for my DD. I need a better plan for 2018! I was on holiday last week and bought 2 scarves, a dress and numerous other accessories I didn't really need... Blush

Alwaysreadyforablether · 06/11/2017 18:17

I was so proud of myself today - took four black bags of clothes to the charity shop and looked at my streamlined wardrobe with glee. Then I realised I have FOUR brand new pairs of slippers - FOUR!! Who even stockpiles slippers? I mean I will keep them and they will all get worn eventually but that's just ridiculous. Please someone else tell me of your ridiculous stockpiles to make me feel a bit better!

silkpyjamasallday · 06/11/2017 18:33

May I tentatively join? I have just done a massive splurge on online shopping and have felt the guilt today as DP was in and answered the door to four parcels Blush and there's more to come. I shop when I'm feeling stressed and out of control. Admittedly I did need a few new things as I am a size bigger than I was pre baby and a lot of staple things like jeans didn't fit. And I lost about 20 odd cashmere jumpers to moths because I didn't store them properly after we moved. But I have more than I need now so I need to stop. It's my birthday in December though so I'll aim to stop in the new year, and follow along for tips in the meanwhile.

crazybutterflylady · 07/11/2017 07:53

Ooh can I join please? I really need to stop spending. I too feel like I am living like a blogger except the things I get are bought and not gifted. Instagram is a massive source of spends for me, and discount emails as a PP said.

I’m a sucker for make up and skincare, DH keeps saying “haven’t you got every colour in everything now?” Hmm

Slightly concerned I will now spend November and December buying ALL THE THINGS in preparation. I will be strong!

crazybutterflylady · 07/11/2017 08:11

always I have so many eyeshadows and eyeshadow palettes it’s ridiculous. I have 2 eyes!
I have enough to last me well beyond the grave despite the fact I wear eye make up every day.
Also, nice notebooks. I have loads. But “saving” for a special use Hmm

FiveShelties · 07/11/2017 08:22

I started on November 1st, I just have so much stuff, clothes, books cosmetics. I did join a thread in January but fell off and never returned. The sheer number of blouses, tops and tee shirts with labels still attached is really stupid - also have lots of lovely notebooks which I am saving - perhaps I should keep my no spending log in one of them!

So yes please I would love to join you.

Eilasor · 07/11/2017 08:31

Joining. When I have no disposable income at all I'm a great scrimper and saver, but as soon as I have a little extra cash I go crazy and buy so many things I don't need (or spend ridiculous amounts of money on things I 'need' i.e. £130 on a pair of boots where £30 ones would have been perfectly fine). I just started to work full time, but I don't earn anywhere near enough to justify how much I've been spending and, beyond that, the consumerist culture I'm buying into makes me feel a bit a sick!

Im in.

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 07/11/2017 10:55

I'm in.

choppolata · 07/11/2017 12:19

Sign me up! I've just spent €134 on a pair of boots from Paris despite knowing that 90% of footwear I buy online won't fit me. I have clothes and shoes stashed everywhere and need to go cold turkey!

Anjelika · 07/11/2017 13:32

I'll tentatively join you although think I'll try Mowglik's idea of a £50 monthly limit. I recently moved to a new area and thought that would "cure" me as no-one would have seen any of my clothes so it'd be a bit like having a brand new wardrobe. Well that hasn't worked!! I do think that the more you shop the more you want to shop and know in the past that if I just stay away from the shops I can wean myself off shopping for a few months but of course there's the online stuff. I cannot resist a £10 Boden voucher used alongside a 20% off offer and convince myself I've got a bargain! Def need to unsubscribe from the many retail mailing lists I'm on!!

Alwaysreadyforablether · 07/11/2017 14:06

For me, I think it's related to being a perfectionist (not that I actually think I'm perfect!). But there's something inside me that always wants the next perfect thing and that people will judge me if I wear the same top again or whatever. Rationally I know that the majority of people are far too interested in themselves to even register what I'm wearing. That's probably how I ended up with the slipper stockpile - each pair seemed more perfect than the last (even though hardly anyone else ever sees my slippers!)

Anjelika · 07/11/2017 17:19

I just seem to move from one thing "I really need" to the next. A few weeks ago I convinced myself I absolutely needed some low black biker boots as opposed to the calf height ones I'd already got. Bought some and haven't even worn them yet but then started thinking I needed some block heeled black ankle boots as the exact same ones I have in taupe weren't quite rightwith some clothes and neither were the 2 pairs of platform-style black ankle boots I possess.

crazybutterflylady · 07/11/2017 18:30

I’m dying to ask for details of your slippers... is that missing the point? Blush

INeedAWittyNameChange · 07/11/2017 19:38

CrazyButterflyLady I am currently sporting a grey stripy pair with grey pom poms (they were a gift so guilt free). I have a navy velvet pair with sheepskin lining and pom poms (definitely a theme here). I have a fawn pair with gold stars and finally a grey pair with balls of grey and white fluff on the front (which is totally different to pom poms!)

DancingHouse · 07/11/2017 22:11

I shall join starting now rather than waiting for the new year to begin.

eBay is my downfall, I sell a few bits then just have a quick browse and buy more bits. Hmm

I've started by emptying my watch list and turned off my save searches. I think I might uninstall other shoppings apps too like ASOS. They just make it too easy to spend money.

otherdoor · 07/11/2017 22:38

Watching with interest. I'd love to do this but not sure I have the willpower!

KitschNCabernet · 08/11/2017 01:50

I'd like to rein in spending too. I see it as being a bit like weight loss programs. Trying to spend nothing (eat nothing/drastic eating plan) won't work and I'll give up quickly and buy the first pair of glitter stilettos (chocolate bar) I see ti gratify my deprived state.. But if i think mindfully about what I need to buy (adopt a sensible, balanced healthy eating plan), have a budget (daily calories goal) record what i purchase ( keep a food diary and log calories), and do this consistently I will reach my goal. or not

IrisMumToBe · 08/11/2017 12:25

My last makeup shop happened early this year and somehow (even though I wear some makeup every day) it all is still there and still usable. I'm quite surprised since last year I've had the exact opposite problem!

cookie77 · 08/11/2017 13:19

Can I tentatively join too? Although it may have to be a monthly spending limit...

I am on maternity leave currently and now unpaid before return to work in the new year. And youngest is going to nursery which will be a significant additional expense so really need to rein in my spending and look more at saving. So many of these stories ring true for me. Online shopping is the problem for me - I've unsubscribed from lots of stores but need to do more.

I gave myself a shopping ban when I started mat leave and lasted for 4 months (which is amazing for me) but as soon as sleep regressions hit with the baby and my mood plummeted, the spending re-started. I obsess over all clothes, but my downfalls are coats and shoes/boots. I'm embarrassed by the number of coats I own Blush

Things that have truly worked for me recently have been bagging things up for return immediately if there is no 'I love this' factor, deleting emails/ unsubscribing and mulling over things for a few days rather than clicking straight away - usually by getting distracted by something else in the real world.

I want to stop being on such friendly terms with the delivery man!

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 08/11/2017 17:25

Joining! Like many of you, returning to work from maternity leave soon. I know I have been massively soothing my PND with shopping (and chocolate!), as well as trying to work out what the hell I wear now my body looks a completely different shape post-baby. The problem is that I’ll see something on that lovely model from Hush, tell myself I absolutely need a rushed skirt/Carrie dress/blazer etc. Once I have that item my wardrobe’s complete and I’ll feel like me again. Cut to the item arriving, me feeling even crapper about my body because I look awful in it, then back to online shopping for the block heel boots (that I’ll never bloody wear chasing a 10 month around) that will definitely complete my wardrobe and make me feel me again.

I also have an insane amount of fabric and wool stashed away (enough to warrant its own wardrobe Blush) that I intended to sew/knit. I tell myself I don’t have time, but if I dragged myself off eBay and here I’d have at least another 2 hours in my day.

FiveShelties · 10/11/2017 23:58

Had a serious test yesterday as I popped the M & S Advent Calendar in my basket, along with other 'essential' items. Have emptied basket and resisted temptation - so difficult, I am so easily tempted! Grin

HolgerDanske · 11/11/2017 10:19

It's not 2018 yet, though... (Sorry, don't mean to be an enabler Grin)

I bought one yesterday, it will come in handy to top up my make up and stuff before my no-spend in the new year.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 11/11/2017 13:22

Agree with you Holger Grin

I splurged (had one last hurrah) before starting this thread. I am still waiting for the postman/courier to knock on the door with my last few items. I also picked up some necessities in M&S the other day and got the beauty advent calendar. No regrets though, it's good again this year. It will be difficult at first in 2018 but is very important I stop next year - I have to save.
