For financial reasons (I'm broke and have to save) I have made a deal with myself to stop my frivolous style and beauty spending for 2018.

I will only be purchasing necessities as they run out (like cleanser) or replacements for laddered tights etc. I will take myself off mailing lists so I'll have no idea when there are any offers or discounts.

I will use my imagination and pinterest to create looks and outfits without accumulating more stuff to clutter my room and my mind!

Is anyone inteseted in joining in?

Here's to a style and beauty debt free 2018 Halo

Managed to resist the lure of feel unique tooth. Went to Boots yesterday and bought new toothbrush heads for the electric toothbrush as I don’t think I’d replaced mine for about 6 months. Also replaced a heat protector spray I’d run out of. Avoided the makeup aisles of temptation completely!

I have money left over this month- woo! Enjoying seeing the bank balance stay healthy and the pile of cosmetics in my bathroom reduce!

Pupsiecola · 24/01/2018 17:16

Well done mission. Must feel great?

Notreallyhappy · 24/01/2018 17:25

Mission...check Groupon for replacement toothbrush heads..I got 24 compatible braun heads for €12.

Interesting reading all your saving cutting back or not messages... I think i should join in..I have a shoe hoard and just bought another black pair plus a beauty hoard which has 16 lipsticks & 7 different foundations.

This week I've finished both serum and concealer and was able to shop my stash for replacements, This avoiding a trip to the shops. Have also hit pan on an ancient eyeshadow palette I've been trying to use up in recent months. It was a sobering moment, as those things really do seem to last forever, so no point buying more as I must have another 5 or 6 on the go at present.

Had a small epiphany yesterday as I was passing a jewellery shop on my way to meet a client and saw a gorgeous quartz and coral bead necklace in the window. I was actually about to go in and buy it when I thought of this thread and realised that I hardly ever wear necklaces anyway. I am, however, terrible for buying things just because I think they're pretty and like the look of them Blush

Bought a second-hand book yesterday and will need to go to the dry cleaners tomorrow, but apart from that I'm determined to do zero spend until the end of the month (small goal, I know, but you have to start somewhere).

pasturesgreen · 25/01/2018 15:47

thus, not This.

Missionocrity · 25/01/2018 20:48

It felt good pupsiecola think I need to unsubscribe from cosmetic companies mailing lists so there’s less temptation!

How is everyone else getting on with resisting the urge?!

CallingAllEngels · 27/01/2018 10:03

With clothes I'm doing great - not bought anything this month. Unsubscribing from newsletters has definitely helped here mission .

Birthday handbag.

Beauty/skincare not so good - got sucked into ordering a Mrs Gloss box last night. I really should unfollow group on fb (already have notifications off). Also got the EL blockbuster set early January. Both will be waiting for me next time I go to the UK. Also bought a new foundation brush yesterday as mine is giving up the ghost.

Missionocrity · 27/01/2018 13:41

Not quite beauty related but has anyone ever bought black clothing dye and re-dyed black clothes that are faded?

I’ve got a cotton cardigan and pair of chinos that fit really nicely and are looking a bit faded, would like to revitalise them a bit!

pasturesgreen · 27/01/2018 14:07

I have, Mission. Tried it with some jeans and they turned out very well, I think it's worth a try!

Have been trying to declutter a bit. Very small progress as there's so much stuff around, but it was very liberating to start to get rid of some of it.

I was on the S&B beauty product hoard thread and had been trying to use up old makeup and lotions for a few months, but there's only so much eyeshadow I can go through in this lifetime, so this year I've opted for a fresh start and just binned the oldest/least loved products.

Also rearranging my bookshelves and getting rid of a few things. I need to be objective and realise that, while there are books I loved reading once, I'm not likely to ever read them again, so these will go to the Oxfam bookshop.

My guiding criterion in getting rid of things has been whether or not I'd be happy to take them with me on a hypothetical house move.

Pupsiecola · 28/01/2018 00:08

Well done pastures. I'm a natural minimalist plus 4 moves in 5 years (including one half way round the world (then back)) exacerbated that tendency. I don't have a lot of stuff, but I do like good quality stuff. I just want to stop the non essential purchases and see what we can save in a year.

Almost at the end of January and tracking all spending on a spreadsheet has been interesting. My goal for February is to knock £200 off the food bill...

I have ordered two travel size skincare products from Paula's Choice for use at home, not travel, but should past ages as they are use 2-3 times a week items. My son took 3 friends to the cinema for his birthday tonight paid for by us, but I don't mind that.

Missionocrity · 28/01/2018 09:33

You’ve inspired me pastures going to get some dylon from Wilko and give it a try!

I love a good declutter but my husband is a bit of a hoarder so it feels like I’m on my own in my mission to streamline things!

I should track my spending pupsie but I’m much too chicken! Maybe next month...

CallingAllEngels · 28/01/2018 11:08

I've just found a Dutch vintage 2nd hand sale site that looks promising for shifting some of my wardrobe. I have a lot of dresses that I rarely wear or are too big/small Collectif, Lady V, Hell Bunny). Would really like to downsize my wardrobe and only keep the pieces I love.

ToothTrauma · 28/01/2018 16:00

Well I’ve made a purchase but I’m quite pleased with my restraint. Going away on an active
holiday next week and really needed a waterproof jacket, some more leggings, and some more plain long-sleeve tees. DH needed some more joggers and tees.

Got everything we needed on ASOS, most of it in the sale, and didn’t buy anything else! So I’m happy with that. Several of my favourite beauty brands have had launches recently and I haven’t spent a bean, which has been hard but I’m sticking with it.

Everyone seems to be doing so well! Pupsie I have been tracking all our spending as well. Our grocery bill is out of control Blush that’s the next goal.

Pupsiecola · 28/01/2018 19:17

Talking of groceries where does everyone shop and has anyone gone from Waitrose to Lidl?!

Underparmummy · 29/01/2018 09:40

Pupsie - mainly Tesco online here but use Lidl for top ups if I have time to get to a shop on my morning off.

Pupsiecola · 29/01/2018 10:15

Argh! My beloved Dyson of hair taming fame has died. 95 quid for a new one. What to do?!

Pupsiecola · 29/01/2018 22:33

I don't know why I typed Dyson. It was a Parlux. I would never buy a Dyson at those prices! Anyway, despite being in touch with both Parlux and Dyson I have had to buy a new one :(

pasturesgreen · 30/01/2018 17:55

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the vacuum cleaner, Pupsie. Unexpected expenses like that suck Sad

Have shown admirable restraint so far, if I may say so myself. No frivolous purchases since Friday. Had the afternoon off today for a dentist appointment and managed to not take a detour round the shops on my way back, which felt like quite an achievement!

Have vowed to try and curb my mid-morning cappuccino and cake habit from now until Easter, in a bid to cut costs and calories.

CallingAllEngels · 31/01/2018 21:08

It's the end of January and I have managed to get through a whole month without buying a single item of clothing...hurrah!

I did however manage to spend £105 on beauty (Estée Lauder blockbuster kit, Mrs Gloos box, and new foundation brush) and €160 on a liebeskind handbag (for my birthday because my husband is an arsehole who didn't organise anything, not even a card from the kids, so I think that can be forgiven).

Next month, no beauty box purchases (will have to stay away from Mrs Gloss I think!). They're my new weakness (what a great deal! all these products for only £XX!).

Focusing on using up my stash of soap/creams/face masks/make up etc (on the beauty hoard thread in S&B).

Pupsiecola · 31/01/2018 23:35

Well done calling. It's been such a long month too (feels like).

I've set up pocket money standing orders for the two early teens (boys). £40 a month each and they're to buy all their own stuff. And they're to save some. They're both just getting into fashion a little, and going to a cafe with friends sort of a thing and I want to teach them to budget. Had to buy a full on GCSE worthy protractor set for the eldest. Was 12 quid. Have told them I will buy anything for school, but if it gets lost (uniform included) they will have to replace it. Also do jobs and keep rooms tidy or I will take back £5 per week.

They have school meals. DS1 is really into his fitness and has been buying 2 x bottles of water at school lately. That's not happening from a cost and environment pov so I've ordered them a decent bottle each from Amazon. 13 quid each but they will pay for themselves in the first month. We have a couple of well used ones but they leak a bit.

My hairdryer (not vacuum cleaner!) arrived today.

I've closed off my spending spreadsheet for January. Have saved a fair few hundred quid Blush.

Looking forward to building on that in Feb. Room for improvement, especially re food. Am hoping to lop £200 off the bill...

Underparmummy · 01/02/2018 08:22

I fell at the weekend. We've got a special holiday in feb and I ordered a bikini. Im keeping it... I have also ordered 2 dresses for a work event but I want to send them back when they arrive.
Annoyed with myself!

ShoopShoop · 02/02/2018 07:16

Just checking in to say I survived January.....just! Still lusting after a Sandqvist backpack though. Blush

Missionocrity · 02/02/2018 13:32

Survived January and have assigned myself a strict budget for February. There is NO clothing allowance in the budget and only £30 for beauty products (replacement of products which run out only, no new and frivolous buys!)

Bought the clothing dye but haven’t done it yet as DD has been in hospital this week. So glad to have her home and on the mend now!

CallingAllEngels · 02/02/2018 14:18

I'm aiming for a no spend February. Can't see myself running out of any toiletries this month...

Pupsiecola · 02/02/2018 15:54

Mission sorry to hear your daughter has been poorly. Glad she's on the mend.

No clothes or toiletries here in February.
