AIBU to wonder if WFH will return due to Kraken?

Hello :)

Although there is the encouragement of wearing masks again. Currently in this season we have flu, strep A, various viruses and now, Kraken Covid...

Am I being unreasonable to think that those, like me who were shielding will need to WFH rather than be hybrid? or do you think that Hybrid will continue?

TIA

Probably a bit late, from what I’ve seen the latest wave has already ‘peaked’. But I’m sure you could speak to your employer if you’d prefer to work from home.
I absolutely hate working from home so won’t be doing it any more than im already forced to!

I sincerely hope so it has peaked.

I honestly think there are some people out there who want covid to last forever.

PIL have “locked down” again and are refusing to set foot out the door unless it’s for a 5am jog or see anyone (both just turned 70, both runners and in rude health). And whilst I am very grateful for that, there are people who’s mental health has been affected in a very bad way over the last few years.

Mental health has definitely taken a hit. Not to mention a year long wait to see a CBT or psychotherapist.

Even my PIL have locked down, however for the first time they have been quite unwell and are frail.

I'll say it, who released the kraken?

I might change my username to your last 4 words. 😂
I didn't realise they'd called the latest variant (present in the UK since late summer last year) such a ridiculous name.

tinytemper66 · 05/01/2023 16:33

As a teacher I never want to work from home ever again. It was soul destroying.

Those who are CEV have all had 4 jabs. Shielding is over but if you want to WFH you should speak to your employer not ask MN for permission

From reading about it their is so many differences between the original and omicron stains that kraken covid May not recognise antibodies or vaccines.

I'm CEV and I've been really really I'll for the last 5 weeks. Ask my covid tests came back negative. I'm still struggling to breathe today. I struggle with breathlessness just turning over in bed at night. I hope to god this was Kraken covid so I'm over it already!

My family have had it over Christmas and are still feeling ill and we definitely do not want it to last forever. But to go from it being recommended to wear masks and keep your distance to nothing, plus our immune systems not even had to deal with an old fashioned cold, has meant we appear to have got it quite bad despite having had all the vaccinations available to us. I am not sure what the answer is, but we personally have gone back to wearing a mask whilst shopping, keeping away from people and will probably get our food shop delivered.

astarsheis · 05/01/2023 16:36

I've never been able to work from home and as a key worker worked all through lockdown.
WFH is one of the worse things to come out of lockdown and is one reason why this country is in such dire straits...but that is just my humble opinion 😉

HermioneWeasley · 05/01/2023 16:37

I find it unlikely that they have stepped away from naming Covid variants based on letters of the Greek Alphabet and moved straight to mythical monsters.

WestwardHo1 · 05/01/2023 16:38

"Kraken covid"???

WTF am I reading now?

ShirleywasaLady · 05/01/2023 16:38

But to go from it being recommended to wear masks and keep your distance to nothing

Except it wasn't going to nothing, we've got vaccines, which is basically the most significant defence there is.

It’s ok. Godzilla Covid will defeat it.

I agree- when i first heard i thought of the monster Kraken from europe who comes at christmas lol

That’s Krampus

Msgrieves · 05/01/2023 16:28

DH says this when he goes for a poo, especially if he’s been a bit constipated

Kevinyoutwat · 05/01/2023 16:42

The Krampus variant would have been more fitting for Christmas.

Bubblesdublin · 05/01/2023 16:42

It certainl would make sense. My sisters company has told all staff fully wfh for now. We sre still hybrid.

Not with that insufferable Godzooky getting in the way he won't!

My boss did just mention something about some new supervariant from the USA making it's way over. I'm calling in Hong Kong Phooey pronto....

DalmationStation · 05/01/2023 15:36

Does Kraken show on lateral flows?

I'm not convinced, someone I know in healthcare said that I should swab tonsils, not just nose

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 05/01/2023 16:44

Kracken covid sounds like the name of a virus in the movies, very twelve monkeys.

Couldnt give a shit about Kraken Covid, Godzilla Covid, or Loch Ness Monster Covid. Virus gonna virus.

Rolypops · 05/01/2023 16:45

I know schools will never be closed again but I do wonder whether unis might go online again if things get out of control. The silence from the government is really shocking considering the state of the hospitals at the moment.

Rolypops · 05/01/2023 16:46

On a lighter note I read it as 'Karen' Covid which made me laugh. Karen's have a rough enough time with their name these days as it is...

Fairyliz · 05/01/2023 16:46

Surely most people who can work from home are already doing so whether they want to or not, mainly because of the train strikes.

Chersfrozenface · 05/01/2023 16:48

HermioneWeasley · 05/01/2023 16:37

I find it unlikely that they have stepped away from naming Covid variants based on letters of the Greek Alphabet and moved straight to mythical monsters.

It looks as though the mythical monster names are the work of a bloke called T Ryan Gregory, a professor of "integrative biology" at the University of Guelph in Canada. He has promoted unofficial names for variants including Cerberus, Typhon and Gryphon as well as Kraken. And some media have run with this - well, I suppose it makes their copy more exciting that referring to BQ.1.1, BQ.1 and XBB.
