Scottish MNers - will you be ditching the mask today?

I haven’t been out and about today (wfh) but my husband was in town with the kids earlier and said he saw a pretty drastic reduction in mask wearing. There are debates on Twitter and it seems to be a fairly even split from that.

I’ll be ditching mine, to be honest. Given the rates we have had since England dropped the mask mandate, I don’t see any evidence that they are actually doing anything.

I do however suspect that a lot of places will want to keep them in place anyway - has this been the case in England?

I think it will take a while for people to stop wearing them.
I think it'll be quicker than you're expecting. I thought I'd carry on wearing one whenever I went into a shop. Within two weeks I'd started to be more lax. And then a week later, I'd stopped completely.

Mrsjayy · 19/04/2022 18:24

It's probably habit still you are probably right LetitiaLeghorn .

WouldBeGood · 19/04/2022 18:24

London was totally mask free so here’s hoping. It was so nice to see peoples faces

Alwayspaintyournails · 19/04/2022 18:36

@ssd

I think the extra long restrictions we've had has killed off Glasgow. Its a ghost town now. I walked down Buchanan Street yesterday into princes Square. Prince's Square empty, on a bank holiday!! And sauchiehall Street is finished, argyle st going the same way. Its just awful.
I would agree and can only hope it gets better. I used to shop in Glasgow frequently but the mask wearing made me overheat and my feel stressed. Heading into town tomorrow… might even brave Zara!

You're nice. I haven't missed seeing anyone Grin
WouldBeGood · 19/04/2022 18:47

🤣 I like seeing people @ssd

Mrsjayy · 19/04/2022 18:48

I was in Glasgow on Saturday and it was mobbed I've only been 4 or 5 times in 2 years and it felt like a normal Saturday.

ssd · 19/04/2022 19:01

I was working Friday and Saturday , Friday was busier than Saturday. The store im in is always busy now.

Lou98 · 19/04/2022 19:05

@WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno

I think they’ll be worn as a political statement. Pro-Indy = pro-mask Grin

I don't think so - I voted yes for independence and would again but I couldn't wait to ditch the mask!

I'll still wear it to my midwife and hospital appointments if they ask but won't be wearing it anywhere else. As you say, there isn't enough proof they're worth it for me or I perhaps would.

I'd never judge anyone wearing one though, I'm just happy that it's now down to individuals to choose what they're more comfortable with

florafoxtrot · 19/04/2022 19:57

Still wearing it in the office and I’ve noticed a lot of people still wearing them in shops. I think it’s great that there is now individual choice but unfortunately you’ll find plenty of people saying they don’t care if other people wear a mask or not, but then also sneering towards those still choosing to do so.

WouldBeGood · 19/04/2022 20:13

I genuinely don’t care If people wear them @florafoxtrot.

CharityShopChic · 20/04/2022 08:24

On my trip around various places in Glasgow yesterday, in and out of shops and on and off public transport, I'd say it was 50/50. And that was only the second day of the rule change. I think we're going to see exactly the same pattern as the rest of the Uk and the percentage of people wearing them will decline week on week until it's very unusual to see one.

I roll my eyes at people who are giving me death stares for not having one on whilst their nose isn't covered by a mask because they aren't even close to wearing it correctly!

Wouldn't sneer at anyone who choses to wear a mask correctly but nor will I accept being lectured by people either with the whole guilt trip aspect given research shows with new variants only FFP2s do much!

Like anything in life if people respect others boundaries and decisions it's not a issue however if they don't then it's a problem but that's a 2 way problem

rookiemere · 20/04/2022 11:21

Agree @Scottishskifun , to me there's a huge difference between wearing any old mask to "be kind" and an actual medical grade mask that would genuinely stop the spread of covid.

I fail to see how putting on a fabric mask in a tightly packed restaurant when going to the toilet makes any difference to the likelihood of me spreading any disease unless I was sneezing or spluttering as I went, in which case I shouldn't be out and about. Ditto when standing up at the office.

Unfortunately they have become some peoples comfort blankets which is fine if they want to wear them not so fine if they judge me for not wearing an ineffectual piece of material.

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2022 12:39

Barely a mask to be seen in shops and cafes at East Kilbride today. Totally as normal.

florafoxtrot · 20/04/2022 12:40

We obviously have different ideas of what is considered sneering. But that’s fine, once again choice and respect of others is what’s important to me.

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2022 12:42

That’s what I’ve been asking for all along. Choice and respect.

GoldenOmber · 21/04/2022 19:02

Definitely noticing fewer on the trains the past couple of days. Was on two today and on one of them under half of people in my carriage in masks, on the other nobody at all.

I think a lot of people are still taking their cue from those around them - if you get on a train and loads of people are in masks, maybe they’ll wear one too so others don’t feel uncomfortable, but if they get on and nobody else is in a mask then they won’t bother.

WouldBeGood · 21/04/2022 19:42

It’s been lovely today; I realised I actually saw the faces of the gym staff for the first time! Been masked ever since I joined there.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 21/04/2022 19:42

Ive been in the shops a few times since I posted this. Seeing a big reduction in masks. Also none in the school playground or at nursery pick-up. This pleases me.

Why does it please you? I dont care what anyone else does Confused

WouldBeGood · 21/04/2022 20:34

I like it cos it’s normal. You can see faces, chat, recognise people, smile, interact - makes me happy 😊

ssd · 21/04/2022 20:50

Fair enough 😀

WouldBeGood · 21/04/2022 20:58

What we going to chat about now this is all done @ssd? 😊

Nanalisa60 · 21/04/2022 21:02

No I won’t be wearing a mask, I’m so happy that they are no longer the law.
