Scottish MNers - will you be ditching the mask today?

I haven’t been out and about today (wfh) but my husband was in town with the kids earlier and said he saw a pretty drastic reduction in mask wearing. There are debates on Twitter and it seems to be a fairly even split from that.

I’ll be ditching mine, to be honest. Given the rates we have had since England dropped the mask mandate, I don’t see any evidence that they are actually doing anything.

I do however suspect that a lot of places will want to keep them in place anyway - has this been the case in England?

@PearlclutchersInc

It'll be interesting to see how the numbers go - but since most of the half wits of all persuasions have dumped theirs it maybe won't make a lot of difference.
Half wits? Jeez people are happy they have a choice in something!

Do you wear a mask properly?
Wash or anti bac your hands before putting it on, change the mask every 3 hours or sooner if it becomes moist, don't use the same mask more then once (so don't take it on and off for different shops), put on a new mask if you have taken it off, have it flush against your face a possible, never touch the front or readjust it, never pull it down, antibacterial your hands before taking it off via the loops and disposing of it in the bin?
If a FFP2 have you bothered to face fit test it? Do you know how to face fit test?

If the answer to any of the above is no then the half wit isn't the person who choses not to wear a mask.......

Yep, masks need to be worn properly to be of any use. At first i was doing more or less what @Scottishskifun said above, as i was really worried about the virus. But over time, I've just got weary of it all and i was using a mask stuffed in a pocket most days, which didn't help anyone. I think in Glasgow the problem was we seemed to be in restrictions for ever and people are just plain fed up now. I haven't had the virus yet but i know i will one day. But ive come to realise a worn crumbled up mask won't save me from anything so i gave them up completely a good few weeks ago.

ssd · 19/04/2022 09:16

And you know what, some people just dont have any bloody sense. The poster above who went to Edinburgh and was told where's your mask and told to use separate loos, by shop staff, well that would have happened in my shop too. Ive seen staff stand at the door barking at people to wear a mask etc. Then the same staff sit in the staffroom at tables jammed with people. Or go into fitting rooms jammed with people. Or seen the person cleaning trolleys give the handles a 2 second wipe with a bit of dry blue roll, only because someone is watching...There's been a lot happened though out this pandemic thats made me shake my head. Its really just down to yourself now to do what is right for you.

CharityShopChic · 19/04/2022 09:17

Yes i's been a long time in Glasgow hasn't it. All of Scotland has done the masks for ever but we have had the strictest rules of anywhere. All the not crossing your council boundary nonsense, and hospitality/shops closed for longest.

Also agree that some of the rules were just nuts, walk into a crowded bar/cafe wearing your mask, remove as soon as seated.

WouldBeGood · 19/04/2022 09:22

Good point about how long it’s been.

And the mental rules: I remember being barked at to walk the long way round M&S to go to the empty tills rather than straight there.

I’m really excited to get out for some leisurely shopping, and to a gallery now 😊

randomsabreuse · 19/04/2022 09:28

Depends what I'm doing. Not for walking into or around a restaurant as I'm going to be breathing in all the air unmasked while I sit down. Yes for just plain shopping, popping to the toilet in a motorway services (helps with the smell!) or if somewhere is really busy.

Blone · 19/04/2022 09:29

Ditched them ages ago!

ssd · 19/04/2022 09:30

I think the extra long restrictions we've had has killed off Glasgow. Its a ghost town now. I walked down Buchanan Street yesterday into princes Square. Prince's Square empty, on a bank holiday!! And sauchiehall Street is finished, argyle st going the same way. Its just awful.

CharityShopChic · 19/04/2022 09:35

Currently waiting on a platform to get a train into town. Scotrail still playing the “wear a face covering” message. 4 people in platform. 1 mask.

Scottishgirl85 · 19/04/2022 09:36

Scotland rates have been terrible, thus mask wearing by the general public appears to be achieving very little. People mostly catch covid from family and friends when spending time indoors. Covid is not being spread by maskless people walking past you in tesco.

Most people haven't been wearing the right type of mask or wearing them properly. I saw a lot of older people yesterday still wearing cloth masks on the bus. I know the goverment don't want to talk about it anymore but I feel they could have at least signed-out from the pandemic with some decent public health messaging so those who still need to be cautious have the right information.
firef1y · 19/04/2022 10:29

Not in Scotland, but imagine it will play out similar to here (very small town, east of England). Always been mask exempt so I've never worn them, first few weeks after the mandate was lifted I was still very much in the minority, there were a few more unmasked faces but still more masks than not. Over the next month or so the number of masks steadily diminished. Now masks are very much in the minority, as in I can go days without seeing anyone wearing one. If I do see someone wearing one I give them lots of space because they are probably a lot more nervous of catching covid than average (possibly for very good reason).

*it's only been in the last couple of weeks I've been allowed in the local bakery (which is now shutting), they completely barred anyone without a mask, exempt or not. Their choice I guess and they would have allowed me to chose and pay at the door, but who wants to chose cakes when they can't see the displays. (Never tested on where they stood on disability discrimination, just went without my weekly treat of freshly baked cakes)

ssd · 19/04/2022 10:42

@containsnuts, see, i think there's been too much information. I feel like a viral expert now. If people still don't know how to keep themselves as safe as possible they must have been living on the moon.

WouldBeGood · 19/04/2022 13:17

No staff wearing masks at my large chain gym today. Most punters mask free.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/04/2022 13:22

I am currently in Morrisons. I would say it's 50:50 mask and no mask.

User48751490 · 19/04/2022 13:36

Was in my local Tesco today - I would say 50:50 split between those choosing to wear masks and those going without. I felt it was quiet enough to not justify wearing one, tbh.

ISpyCobraKai · 19/04/2022 14:08

I spent a few days in Edinburgh last month, I wore a lanyard and the whole time only one person asked about a mask, and that's because the lanyard was tangled up in my scarf so you couldn't see, that was in the Cathedral.
I had no bother in any museums, cafes, restaurants, cinema, hotel etc.

Did you see no evidence they were doing anything prior to today? And if so, why were you still wearing one?
emmathedilemma · 19/04/2022 15:24

Most people (myself included) had them on in the supermarket yesterday but we've been given the option to ditch them while walking around the office today and most people seem to have done (given we're sitting at desks breathing in the same airspace all day I suspect a mask to go to the loo or kitchen isn't doing much to reduce your risk of catching covid!).

oh a few weeks ago LNER trains were asking you to still wear a mask in England "to protect their staff"......did any of their staff have one on......no!!
Mrsjayy · 19/04/2022 15:28

I was on a bud today majority had masks on same with the shops I was In including staff , I think it will take a while for people to stop wearing them.

Mrsjayy · 19/04/2022 15:29

On a bus*

Notlabeled · 19/04/2022 16:36

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee

I will still be wearing one when I'm near other people inside. I'm at a kids gym class without one, but the adults are all well over 2m apart
At 1.9 metres you would likely be dead within minutes. Good call.
rookiemere · 19/04/2022 17:09

No signs or emails at the office about what to do so I just didn't wear mine when walking around.

I'm on the bus just now and I'd say there about 40% people wearing them - mostly older folk.

Hadn't realised how much a minor irritant they were until now I don't need to wear one.

secretllama · 19/04/2022 17:38

@Notlabeled 🤣

Ditched mine in shops/bars/restaurants a while ago as honestly I thought they were completely pointless.

Back in the office today and thankfully they've stopped the requirements for masks too (they knew I wasn't exempt so had to wear there...when walking around only obviously as that's when the virus gets you 🙃 )
