Scottish MNers - will you be ditching the mask today?

I haven’t been out and about today (wfh) but my husband was in town with the kids earlier and said he saw a pretty drastic reduction in mask wearing. There are debates on Twitter and it seems to be a fairly even split from that.

I’ll be ditching mine, to be honest. Given the rates we have had since England dropped the mask mandate, I don’t see any evidence that they are actually doing anything.

I do however suspect that a lot of places will want to keep them in place anyway - has this been the case in England?

Probably. I'm used to it, I have loads (so not wearing the same one all the time as some suggest), have extremely vulnerable relatives that feel happier with people wearing them, and I like people not seeing if I'm muttering F Off.

Pootle40 · 18/04/2022 18:33

I ditched it c. 3 or 4 months ago!

ISpyCobraKai · 18/04/2022 18:36

I didn't wear it in the fist place.
I'm exempt, but in all honesty, the last 6 months just seems ridiculous.
I was in The Hydro in Glasgow last week, hardly a mask to be seen.

Gingerkittykat · 18/04/2022 18:40

I'm CEV so I'm keeping my mask in busy indoor places. It's hard to know exactly how bad my risk is now I'm fully vaccinated but I've somehow managed to dodge covid so far and would like to continue to do so.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 18/04/2022 18:45

We'll still be wearing them. We have relatives and friends who are teachers and in the NHS. The Covid numbers are so high atm. It makes absolutely no sense to pretend it doesn't exist. It is putting so many public facing staff's and vulnerable people's health at risk.

It will be interesting to see if there is a difference in Scotland compared to England. Everywhere I've been in Scotland, the majority are still wearing masks. I suspect that might continue.

WouldBeGood · 18/04/2022 18:46

I think people will ditch them as it’s now accepted that they don’t work.

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 18/04/2022 18:47

I’m exempt although I’ve worn it because I can’t be doing with a row. The only place I might wear it is the village shop if they’re still demanding - although the village pub has been a mask-free zone.

I don’t wear one at the office (once a week) and forgot people still do until I saw the receptionist.

I’m CV and have had it but want to see people’s ugly mugs again.

Also - I’ve refused to pay for the stupid things so “gearnob-living” mask will still be available for ceremonial duties.

GoldenOmber · 18/04/2022 18:48

Well and truly ditching mine.

I don’t mind if some shops want to keep requiring them. Up to them really. A few of my local shops are still limiting numbers and asking people to queue outside/distanced, which I can’t be arsed with, but presumably their other clientele like it so their call really.

KittyBurrito · 18/04/2022 18:49

Nope, I don't feel well and gave a very sore throat. Lft says negative but I don't want to give something to my colleagues

ssd · 18/04/2022 18:50

Thats the only thing i miss, when customers are being dicks, its easy to be saying fuck off whilst wearing a mask....or having a fly sweet whilst you're on the salesfloor...
GoldenOmber · 18/04/2022 18:50

The Covid numbers are so high atm. It makes absolutely no sense to pretend it doesn't exist.

Are people who are ditching masks pretending it doesn’t exist, though? Surely they’re just making different decisions to you against a background where it does exist? I mean it’s still going to exist when we’re all old and grey, so…

ssd · 18/04/2022 18:53

No one i know is pretending its gone away. But people have had enough of masks, especially without firm proof they stop it spreading. I've said it a million times, its fresh air that makes the difference.

Scottishskifun · 18/04/2022 18:54

Cafe I was in today only 1 person bothered because the whole thing of putting a mask on to walk to the toilet was frankly ridiculous in the first place!

DH is very happy he can ditch his and not get in trouble work wise!
Useful info on the BBC today which explains unless a FFP2 then it doesn't do much especically with the newer variants which is what scotnet posters have pointed out for a long time!

I don't care what others do just flipping happy for it to be out of law and not risk the mask police any longer! Last run in was around Christmas time with one!

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 18/04/2022 18:55

I feel like if the numbers were clear that they made a difference, I’d probably keep wearing mine. But that’s not the case so I’m not prepared to do it any more.

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 18/04/2022 18:57

Yeah, Covid still there, always will be. But the masks don’t stop the spread, so no point! But if people feel safer or comforted by them then that’s fine too.

I’ll keep away from people if I’m not well, won’t know if it’s covid as no tests.

Babdoc · 18/04/2022 18:57

Given that Covid levels in Scotland have been higher than England ever since England ditched masks, it’s pretty obvious that either they don’t work or the Scots are incapable of wearing them properly!
Judging by the numbers of idiots I’ve seen wearing them as chin straps or with their nose sticking out, or sticking the same dirty mask in and out of their pocket between shops, it’s probably the latter. Although even worn correctly, they only reduced transmission by 50% at best.
Glad to see the back of them. Sturgeon ditched hers several days earlier- obviously she thinks rules are not for her.

Scottishskifun · 18/04/2022 19:04

Nobody is pretending it doesn't exist but its not going away ever, everyone who wants to be vaccinated is and unless your using a FFP2 then it does naff all against the newer variants because they are more transmissible and require smaller viral load and smaller particles for infection.

I don't care if people wear them or not but do some reading into effectiveness of what your wearing based on the current variant and not the original

LetitiaLeghorn · 18/04/2022 19:11

I'm in England and when the restrictions dropped, I was pretty determined to carry on wearing one as many on here have said. But as more and more people around you don't, its easy to just not wear one just this once. And then that becomes twice and soon you're only wearing them when you have to. My one proviso is if people around me express anxiety, I'd always put one on to make them feel safer.
I'm interested to see if the wearing patterns in Scotland follow the same as in England and what happens to the numbers.

user1487194234 · 18/04/2022 19:15

Yes ,will not be wearing a mask going forward

GrouchyKiwi · 18/04/2022 19:24

I am so glad we no longer have to wear them. I found it harder and harder to do as time has gone on.

Fresh air, sunlight, and staying home when you're unwell are what's needed.

JustABloodyMinute · 18/04/2022 19:27

Not been on public transport today, but I don't want to make others uncomfortable. However, if nobody else is wearing one then I'll not bother.

ginghamstarfish · 18/04/2022 19:28

Yes will be wearing in shops or other places where in close proximity to others.

LaughingLemur · 18/04/2022 19:39

Yes, we'll still be wearing them due to CEV family members, including my 13 year old. Really worried that she'll be bullied at school for wearing a mask as there's so much anti-mask feeling.

luckylady22 · 18/04/2022 19:42

I noticed on Saturday in local big shopping mall that probably only about 20% of people were wearing them so this was even before the rules change

WindyGlowers · 18/04/2022 19:53

I'll keep mine on me but might not wear one all the time.
