How can they still say nothing?

So numbers today over 183,000. How can BoJo and his cronies still be making no statement? No clear guidance, nothing. I'm not wanting lockdown or anything but can't believe they're so quiet over all this.

@Mycatsgoldtooth

Barbie222 and what services will be affected by another lock down? Courts shut again meaning rape/DV trials take three years to come to court so perpetrators still have contact with their kids, social service assessments done over face time, mental health support stopped. Housing officers not visiting tenants in dangerous accommodation.

There is a balance to be found and the lock down fanatics are clutching at straws now. The NHS was not overwhelmed this time last year, it coped. This variant is milder and we are all triple jabbed. COVID patients occupy 7% of the UK hospital beds today.
Sadly the NHS is a shambles. It’s not up to us to suspend our lives, our children’s lives and education and the wellbeing of so many vulnerable children and adults in this country protect it.

The thought we should be having a lock down to stop nurses getting burn out is laughable. I work in social care and have a different view on the costs of lock down. Happy to take my slow hand clap

Very unlikely to be a lockdown because furlough would have to be used again. Sunak would never agree given the veritable panoply of economic headwinds the UK is facing

More likely:

  1. Rule of 6 (2 households max)
  2. Schools go virtual (allthough they are likely to postpone this as much as possible)
  3. WFH
  4. Masks with legislation
  5. Banned indoor dining or events
  6. Non-covid electives cancelled

That sort of thing.

I don’t think I said everyone was making good decisions, did I?

Lifeisnteasy · 30/12/2021 20:35

Well, today’s figures aren’t quite the shit storm people predicted…

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 30/12/2021 20:37

@HighlandCowbag

I suspect the strain on the nhs is caused by the self isolation rules. Scrap them, testing and reporting anything except hospital admissions and let everyone get back to normal. Omicron is so transmissible lockdowns won't work. The issues are being caused by staff shortages for a cold.

I'm pretty sure these people will be disappointed

VaccineSticker · 30/12/2021 20:39

@rrhuth hear hear
@Mycatsgoldtooth you see restrictions in black and white as in hard lockdown or no lockdown at all. I don’t know anyone in real life asking for hard lock down and that’s coming CEV families who have acquired zero antibodies after three vaccines. They are asking for mitigations at schools to make them safer, better masks for the general public and especially to the health workers, vaccinations for the younger children etc.,,

herecomesthsun · 30/12/2021 20:40

good

Bluebluemoon · 30/12/2021 20:41

What does he need to say exactly?

183k caught a bug today which appears from the data to be fairly harmless.

Lack of test availability needs to be considered when looking at the figures so cautious optimism that the increase isn't that much more than yesterday's figures however there are a lot of people showing symptoms who are unable to confirm that it is or isn't covid because there are no tests and a lot of people with positive LFTs who are unable to get a confirmation PCR and therefore don't count in the figures.

Itisasecret · 30/12/2021 20:45

189k and hospitalisations rising sharply are quite a shit storm, I’d say. Especially for those who need urgent care/hospitals for non Covid reasons. Have you tried getting an ambulance in the past week?
Jewel52 · 30/12/2021 20:45

So is your view that we should have more restrictions imposed on the vast majority of people (and time has shown that the vast majority do follow the rules) as a result of the behaviours of those who don’t? You can’t legislate for stupidity (e.g. anti vac conspiracy theorists) and you really shouldn’t try to.

Hospedia · 30/12/2021 20:46

Current testing situation, screenshot taken a few minutes ago. My brother is trying to get a PCR and the nearest testing site available to him is 148 miles away.

How can they still say nothing?
Againstmachine · 30/12/2021 20:47

In the latest set of figures there was nearly 1.5 million that's enough test availablity.

Do you really believe that everyone who follows the rules doesn't get covid and that its only those who don't that catch it?

tillyandmilly · 30/12/2021 20:48

A cold? Ha ha

Hospedia · 30/12/2021 20:49

Evidently it's not seeing as people who need a test are unable to obtain one and the government are then compounding it by advising people to get tested before the go visiting family/go drinking/go to events, etc.

VaccineaSticker do you honestly think the rule of six will make any difference then the way people have been behaving? I’m in london, we have seen no one this Xmas, nor have any of our friends or colleagues.people are using their common sense here. People who don’t care about COVID will just meet at home or other places with no regulations. Masks… have they helped in Germany or France? I wear mine but assume it’s just theatre as I now only know two people who haven’t had COVID this last year, all of them mask wearers. People are free to buy a better mask if they feel it will help. Schools? Ventilation great - my sons primary have had the windows open all year and lots of out door time. What your missing is as soon as the small restrictions are in place then statutory bodies get spooked and start to cancel things. You can look on the threads about play groups, health visitors and post natal support. None of it has returned to anywhere near the level it should. My DD is 8 months and other then her five day check & baby jabs has never seen a HCP. All appointments have been on the phone.
And there are people on this thread calling for lock downs and a over this board and the wider media. The tide is turning but people still want them. I don’t think they will happen, but professionally I’m terrified they will.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 30/12/2021 20:52

Yep,a friend the same age as me was ill for several weeks with this cold and lost so much weight that her trousers fell down. Recorded as a mild case.
Still not right but yeah it's just a cold.

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 20:52

Today’s figure were not as high as I feared but the week on week rise is really worrying.
Support all esp to those who have lost loved ones or are struggling.
No matter what we all think it’s gonna be a tough January !

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/12/2021 20:53

there are no trains to victoria station until 10th january due to covid Shock on southern services

Mask use in France and Germany is nowhere near Universal.

For masks to work you need about 93% compliance.

At that point they have a moderate effect on transmission.

Spain is a good example of this as they are at about 90-95% mask compliance.

People saying we can make our own decisions to keep ourselves safe ..tell that to my mum who has been shielding all year and only caught it in A&E when her pulse was low and blood pressure rocketed, sent there by her GP. I'll people are avoiding hospitals for god's sake. We are in a complete mess.

Winterflower84 · 30/12/2021 21:06

No, you clearly want lockdown.
What do you want him so say? That you need to wash your hands frequently, wear a mask when in crowded places or try to avoid crowded places altogether? Did you not know all this already?
I think it's time we all be guided by common sense rather than the government guidance!

Poodles23 · 30/12/2021 21:06

Totally agree
