They could at least have the decency to let people know...

We all know some kind of restrictions are coming, I don’t want to start the new year with rules in place but if the scientists think it’s the way forward I trust their judgment and will comply.

What I cannot get on board with however as all this hanging about....

Let people know what’s going on, flights and hotels will have been booked, family’s will have bought food accordingly or not on some instances if they were planning to visit friends and family, children will be excited to go to pantomimes, visit grandparents, restaurants will be ordering in stock for New Years parties...

Surely the very least the government can give us is a little time to manage expectations and re plan the next couple of weeks...

I think they are leaking it but by bit to get people used to the idea - it’s psychologically worked in the past.

Also they are still reviewing the data. It’s happening so fast and due to the delay in hospitalisation, the data is only just coming in.

toomuchlaundry · 19/12/2021 11:47

Don’t think they can agree yet what the restrictions should be

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/12/2021 11:48

We're going away on the 27th, it's a bit of a pain not knowing. I hope they announce it in enough time for people to prepare.

OrangeCrunch · 19/12/2021 11:53

Yes, this is getting ridiculous.

If my DD asks me one more where we'll be with that look of excitement, mixed with fear one more time....

It's just awful

OrangeCrunch · 19/12/2021 11:53

*once

Loveatthe5anddime · 19/12/2021 11:53

@Waxonwaxoff0 We are meant to have the in-laws arrive on the 28th. Unless they close holiday lets they are likely to lose their booking payments.

I feel awful for them as last time they can down in the summer we all ended up with COVID two days before the arrival and while they still kept the booking with the cottage and visited the garden, it was a lot easier as in the summer...

Bloody Sod’s law.

They can't tell us what they don't know yet. I think they are waiting to see what the hospitalisation numbers look like.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 19/12/2021 12:10

I think these leaks are test balloons. Johnson won’t get a lockdown, even plan C, past his own party. So they’re leaking stuff to gauge public opinion, because if enough of the public are behind it there’s a strong likelihood they’ll get support from Labour and the SNP in the Commons.

Notonthestairs · 19/12/2021 12:12

I don't want them to announce anything until they have as much data as possible. If there is a way to avoid restrictions I want them to find it.

But yes waiting it is very hard.

Completely agree

Why do people so eagerly want a lockdown and all the misery thst comes with it? Do these lockdown worshippers enjoy see children not at school learning, socialising and for some trapped in an abusive home?

Is it satisfying to see people suffering MH issues, businesses closing, homes repossessed, unemployment, DV, poverty.... for a virus that has a very low death rat.
Lockdown simply delays the spread, we're all vaccinated or have had chance to be. Id happily never see another lockdown ever again.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/12/2021 12:17

They don’t know with any certainty yet.

Loveatthe5anddime · 19/12/2021 12:22

@Whammyyammy You’ve misinterpreted me and as far as I’ve seen, everyone else on here too...

No one wants another lockdown, I just want to be able to able to plan the next few weeks if one is put in place!!

I said that to my OH last night. The leaks are to see how much public support there is to the idea of a lockdown or circuit breaker or rule of six or whatever. They've done it constantly throughout this, that's why there's been so many U-turns.
Kbyodjs · 19/12/2021 12:24

I find it really hard to manage the uncertainty of it; I think they’re drip feeding it though as people I speak to are now resigned to it happening

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 19/12/2021 12:25

I too would like to know. In trying to be sensible we are not seeing everybody all at once, we are spacing things and giving time for testing etc in between. We're due to spend new year with my parents. This is the one we have all been looking forward to, the proper, chilled, relax and spend time together. I feel so stressed not knowing if it will be permitted or not.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 19/12/2021 12:26

I think they won’t tell us until the 11th hour so that we don’t all bring our plans forward and have a last hurrah.

gogohm · 19/12/2021 12:27

No decisions have been made. Hospital numbers are up 200 week on week (ignore admissions it's how many in hospital that count! Deaths are stable. If these numbers rise they will have to act, but how dramatically is to be decided. I don't think they have the political will or even ability to stop Christmas celebrations, new year is less certain. We have the kids back already and go on Thursday to my parents, might send them in ahead in case

RachC2021 · 19/12/2021 12:31

“ Lockdown simply delays the spread “

Which is far better than everyone getting Covid-19 in the same fortnight and civilisation basically grinding to a halt.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 19/12/2021 12:34

Lockdown simply delays the spread

Yep. That's precisely what they are designed to do. That's the whole point of them.

MadinMarch · 19/12/2021 12:41

Do you seriously think anybody actually wants another lockdown?
The possibility of another one has little to do with death rates from Covid, and more to do with the infrastructure of the whole country and the amount of people that are ill and unable to work.
In that scenario, who's going to deliver food to the shops, and load the shelves? Who is going to drive the ambulances and provide lifesaving medical care- not just for Covid, but for car accidents, heart attacks, strokes , delivering babies etc etc etc? Who is going to run the power stations and run our water companies? etc etc etc.

People need to base their decisions about vaccinations, lock down and compliance on the wider ramifications, and stop thinking about just their 'little family'.
Sorry to say, but so many people can't see beyond the end of their nose.

People don’t want lockdown to stop people getting covid. They want lockdown to stop too many people getting it all at the same time as even the tiny proportion that would end up in hospital would be enough to overwhelm health services. And because the lack of frontline workers if too many have covid at the same time could bring society to a halt.

I don’t want a lockdown myself but I understand the above. I’m surprised how many people seem to think that the argument for lockdown is in any way related to how dangerous covid is to most individuals (not very). It’s really not that at all.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 19/12/2021 12:43

Do you really think this government is ‘ decent’ ?

JustDanceAddict · 19/12/2021 12:45

Totally agree.
I am trying to get in the mindset that we are going to be in some form of lockdown but the anticipation is almost worse than the reality.
I expect we’ll be allowed to mix over Xmas then restrictions will come in so I’m not planning anything post 28 Dec. We have tentative arrangements on NYE - 2 families - so that may still go ahead. No idea re the teens’ arrangements. Another nye stuck in w mum and dad won’t be thrill a minute for them 🤦‍♀️
