We all know some kind of restrictions are coming, I don’t want to start the new year with rules in place but if the scientists think it’s the way forward I trust their judgment and will comply.

What I cannot get on board with however as all this hanging about....

Let people know what’s going on, flights and hotels will have been booked, family’s will have bought food accordingly or not on some instances if they were planning to visit friends and family, children will be excited to go to pantomimes, visit grandparents, restaurants will be ordering in stock for New Years parties...

Surely the very least the government can give us is a little time to manage expectations and re plan the next couple of weeks...

Totally agree with you.

Why trust the professionals whose job it is to try to control this, when Brenda from the office says its all about losing our freedumbs?

EightWheelGirl · 19/12/2021 14:03

Exactly. It's truly mind boggling that some people still don't understand the very real risk of our medical resources crumbling under the pressure, especially with increasingly contagious variants.

Its not about people dying of covid. It's about "oh, your husband's having a heart attack? Hold tight and we'll get an ambulance to you in the next three hours."

EightWheelGirl · 19/12/2021 14:04

Doh, meant to quote a PP.

OrangeCrunch · 19/12/2021 14:09

@Porfre, where are you hearing this?

hivemindneeded · 19/12/2021 14:15

The possibility of another one has little to do with death rates from Covid, and more to do with the infrastructure of the whole country and the amount of people that are ill and unable to work.
In that scenario, who's going to deliver food to the shops, and load the shelves? Who is going to drive the ambulances and provide lifesaving medical care- not just for Covid, but for car accidents, heart attacks, strokes , delivering babies etc etc etc? Who is going to run the power stations and run our water companies? etc etc etc.

But how many people are so ill with it that they can't function? Loads of people are in enforced isolation because they test positive not because they feel too ill to work. Work places are shutting down not because people are ill but because they have the virus. Two very different things. We need to focus on protecting the vulnerable not shutting down society.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 19/12/2021 14:19

I won't be changing my plans lockdown or not! I'm done being told who I can and can't see. This will be the third Christmas affected by covid (I almost certainly had covid xmas 19) and I'm done with it!

I've hedged and bought Christmas food that means if our plans are cancelled I can go to my own Plan B. Everything can be frozen if we are still Plan A.

Toastmost · 19/12/2021 14:23

I don't think they know, it will be another few weeks until they see what the effects of omicron are. I think the government is useless, but for once might be being sensible(ish).

Porfre · 19/12/2021 14:31
@Porfre, where are you hearing this?
I havent heard this anywhere.
But I've read enough of the news to see what happens in the lead up to a lockdown

FourTeaFallOut · 19/12/2021 14:36

Because there is increasing reluctance among mps to impose restrictions. It's not just what sage wants, or what the government wants, it's what's achievable to push through Parliament.

So, we have a full blown psychological assault on the public in progress right now to more easily bend the political arm a little later.

I've done the same.
ginislife · 19/12/2021 14:39

A friends daughter sat behind her local mp on the train last week. He was on his phone discussing the lockdown over Christmas..... bastards. My bf had her trip to see family she's not seen for 2 years cancelled last night. Another friend had her trip to France for Xmas with family cancelled on Thursday. There's no notice. No consideration for people on their own desperate to see family. Why did we bother getting vaccinated if they're going to keep doing this. I had to queue at Tesco again today. Fuck it all.

Xenia · 19/12/2021 14:42

For those of us who are planners and indeed have work which means holidays have to be planned 6 months in advance it has been quite hard eg our summer holiday 2020 and 2021 were both cancelled for about ten of us. I will not be booking for 2022. Those were both cancelled in the last 2 weeks before going. So we had 6 months of uncertainty.

2 years of children have not done GCSEs. I hope we can press on with real A levels in 2022 no matter what.

I have bought no Christmas food yet so had better get round to it shortly! Or it will be dry bread and water. We did all meet at the only 13 guests allowed wedding of my daughter in April after the total wedding ban (longest ban for Catholics in London since the 1500s) but it would be good if we could meet at Christmas too. Fingers crossed.....

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 19/12/2021 14:51

Bojo couldn't organise a shag in a brothel. Unless it was him doing the shagging. They've done this all the way through. Whether or not they are gauging public opinion by the leaks, the overall affect is that people just don't trust them, and are living in continuous uncertainty, over and above that caused by the actual virus.

generalh · 19/12/2021 14:51

@Happypootler

I'm not totally against the circuit breaker but I would like to see how the effectiveness of 2 weeks is modelled. If it works really well in squashing infections, wouldn't they have to release restrictions again slowly to avoid a massive bounce back? And if it doesn't work well enough, it would surely be extended beyond 2 weeks? We can't go into it again asssuming it will be a 2 week fix.

In any case I agree they need to commit one way or another now and announce something. Compliance will be lower if rules are brought in at the eleventh hour.

Didn't work in Wales last year, but then we didnt have vaccines.
IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 19/12/2021 14:56

Every two days that the government dithers infections double - which doubles the future hospital admissions and deaths in the new year.

But it's political.

The government have to get the idiot wing of their party onboard, and there are far too many Conservative MPs who seem unable to think ahead a few steps to what will happen next.

Plus the PM has very little authority either within his own party or in the country.

And he hates to be unpopular and go down in history at the PM who cancelled Christmas again.

They could at least have the decency to let people know...

Unfortunately no one knows what the situation is going to be over the next 2 days, never mind 2 weeks, so don’t see how the government can give us clear information on any new restrictions! The best advice is not to book flights, holidays etc., as even without a change in the regulations, these still pose a more significant risk.
RobinsReliant · 19/12/2021 15:00

I agree with you OP. We are working on Christmas Day and Boxing Day so were planning to see family a few days after. We all need to know whether that is going to be possible. Same with all those who have flights planned or other occasions.

hivemindneeded · 19/12/2021 15:01

Does it automatically follow that infection rate doubling leads to double future hospital admissions and deaths? Do the vaccines play no part in easing the severity of the illness? And has the virus not weakened within the last two years, as they typically do?
100problems · 19/12/2021 15:04

I don't think he could organise the brothel either. He'd just potter and flail until a convenient orifice enabled him to blunder in.

Don't get me wrong, I cannot even begin to conceive what a horrendously difficult job government's have at this time. The thing is after 20 months all the rest of them seem to be able to at least fake a determined, organised and resolute front.

The result is we have half the country white-knuckled on the sofa and half the country racing around outside like it's the end of days.

Come the fuck on Boris, we don't expect you to solve Covid but we do expect you to lead man!!!!!!

UntamedShrew · 19/12/2021 15:07

Agree completely OP. This drip feed about possible restrictions is wrecking our heads!

Wonnle · 19/12/2021 15:09

They are trying to scare people into restricting themselves by all this "leaking" of stuff .

gsaoej · 19/12/2021 15:15

I think that they are probably trying to soften the blow (so as not to lose support from voters) as now everyone is expecting restrictions. Rather than imposing restrictions when people were not expecting it and out having fun.
