We all know some kind of restrictions are coming, I don’t want to start the new year with rules in place but if the scientists think it’s the way forward I trust their judgment and will comply.

What I cannot get on board with however as all this hanging about....

Let people know what’s going on, flights and hotels will have been booked, family’s will have bought food accordingly or not on some instances if they were planning to visit friends and family, children will be excited to go to pantomimes, visit grandparents, restaurants will be ordering in stock for New Years parties...

Surely the very least the government can give us is a little time to manage expectations and re plan the next couple of weeks...

“ Lockdown simply delays the spread “

Which is far better than everyone getting Covid-19 in the same fortnight and civilisation basically grinding to a halt.

When do you lift? And then how do you avoid another soon after
Wednesdayafternoon · 19/12/2021 12:47

It must be SO hard for business owners in hospitality and catering.
It's so unfair to create so many clouds of uncertainty because unlike last time there isn't even any assurance of furlough/UC uplift!

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 19/12/2021 12:50

@NightmareSlashDelightful

I think these leaks are test balloons. Johnson won’t get a lockdown, even plan C, past his own party. So they’re leaking stuff to gauge public opinion, because if enough of the public are behind it there’s a strong likelihood they’ll get support from Labour and the SNP in the Commons.
The signs at the moment though are not showing public support for it. So bit of a quandary there now.
frazzledali · 19/12/2021 12:53

@Whammyyammy

Why do people so eagerly want a lockdown and all the misery thst comes with it? Do these lockdown worshippers enjoy see children not at school learning, socialising and for some trapped in an abusive home?

Is it satisfying to see people suffering MH issues, businesses closing, homes repossessed, unemployment, DV, poverty.... for a virus that has a very low death rat.
Lockdown simply delays the spread, we're all vaccinated or have had chance to be. Id happily never see another lockdown ever again.

This is absolute bollocks but it's nice to see a change from lockdown lovers to lockdown worshippers - some new language makes a nice change.

Nobody worships lockdown you loon.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 13:01

I don't want another lockdown :(
There might be a few people who are happy to not see anyone etc , but the majority don't want it happen

However, if the reasons for it are completely justified and the figures for the ones in hospital go up dramatically next week then they might have to do something
Andy burnham on sky news this morning said that it was stable in Manchester at the moment with the hospital admissions etc , London has it worse of course.
I think it'll be much worse after Christmas, once everyone has mingled and seen their families and friends and had fun, it might then spike enormously and become a huge problem and I bet many won't bother testing next week either because they will want to see people over Christmas as well.
It's still a waiting game and the data is so important too.

Notonthestairs · 19/12/2021 13:18

If they lockdown and people don't support/comply they have the perfect excuse to blame the public for any ramifications.

Happypootler · 19/12/2021 13:21

I'm not totally against the circuit breaker but I would like to see how the effectiveness of 2 weeks is modelled. If it works really well in squashing infections, wouldn't they have to release restrictions again slowly to avoid a massive bounce back? And if it doesn't work well enough, it would surely be extended beyond 2 weeks? We can't go into it again asssuming it will be a 2 week fix.

In any case I agree they need to commit one way or another now and announce something. Compliance will be lower if rules are brought in at the eleventh hour.

Whinge · 19/12/2021 13:24

@JustDanceAddict

Totally agree. I am trying to get in the mindset that we are going to be in some form of lockdown but the anticipation is almost worse than the reality. I expect we’ll be allowed to mix over Xmas then restrictions will come in so I’m not planning anything post 28 Dec. We have tentative arrangements on NYE - 2 families - so that may still go ahead. No idea re the teens’ arrangements. Another nye stuck in w mum and dad won’t be thrill a minute for them 🤦‍♀️
This is what I think will happen as well. I just wish they'd hurry up and confirm it, so we all know what's happening.
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/12/2021 13:24

I genuinely don't understand unless we submit to the idea that we will have restrictions every winter. In terms of vaccinations and everything, this is as good as it's going to get and it's still everywhere. What other solutions are there?

Hmm

Or in the real world, people are pissed off with it all but can also see that a collapsed healthcare system will cause major problems too.

Nellodee · 19/12/2021 13:28

They want people to spend as much as possible for as long as possible.

Dancingqueen202 · 19/12/2021 13:28

I just said this to dp. It’s the guessing and not knowing that’s worse. Will Boris talk tonight or tomorrow?

I’m not overly worried about getting covid anymore as fully jabbed but I am worried about the impact it will have on everything if too many people have it at once. We’d planned a very quiet Christmas just incase.

I can’t see how two weeks will help the situation shortly after it is finished

I don’t want them to rush announcement or commit without an understanding of the situation

Hmm at this

Spending has been hammered.

It likely lack of data

MarshaBradyo · 19/12/2021 13:30

It’s..

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 13:33

My town was quite busy today , people buying lots of food or getting their boosters!

It was busy here as well, plenty of people in supermarkets / food shops, but many other shops were almost empty.
vdbfamily · 19/12/2021 13:37

They are hoping to be able to let Christmas go ahead without restrictions but are obviously going to also have to monitor what happens this week. They are between a rock and a hard place and I am glad I don't have to make the decision.

Mamamovingnorth · 19/12/2021 13:45

I think Boris hasn’t got a chance of getting a full lockdown past his backbenchers.

He’ll announce some lame rule-of-6/no indoor eating rubbish along side loads of fire warnings about what will happen if folks socialise and play a major guilt trip to anyone who dares leave the house.

This way they don’t have to reintroduce furlough etc.

NoNameHere12 · 19/12/2021 13:50

As long as it’s after the 30th then I’m good, until then I will be seeing family, I miss them so much!!

Notonthestairs · 19/12/2021 13:50

He doesn't need his backbenchers if he gets Labour on board. Optics are bad of course and the CRG will prattle on but nobody wants to be PM in these circumstances. They'll wait it out.

Porfre · 19/12/2021 13:52

I'll tell you.

They're trying not to lockdown before Christmas.
On Boxing day there will be a lockdown. They are trying to delay it as much as they can, but if the situation worsens they may need to bring in some restrictions before Christmas.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 13:55

I think it'll limp on till after Christmas without any kind of lockdown or circuit breakers.
A few days later the the figures might go up or people will end up in hospital and then they will think again I guess.
If the people don't end up in hospital and can self medicate etc and the figures drop off , then it might be ok ?
It's just getting the balance right isn't it ?
They don't want a lockdown. Nobody does.
It hinges on the hospital capacity and if it isn't ' mild ' , which it seems to be at the moment.

VikingOnTheFridge · 19/12/2021 13:57

Depends what you mean by doesn't need. There'd be two issues for Johnson, getting restrictions through Parliament and keeping his job. He doesn't require the support of the right of his party to pass covid legislation, as Labour would probably vote in favour. But if that happens, he's going to piss off some more of his backbench and make a leadership challenge more likely.
