Anyone else going crazy waiting to hear when we’re going to be locked down …

… there’s a weekend meeting of SAGE & government…Oh the anxiety.

I’m supposed to be flying to see my family for Christmas on Tuesday. I am kicking myself for not booking to go earlier! If they announce lockdown before Christmas we’re all shafted aren’t we …?!

Outdoor only for hospitality is surely useless at this time of year. Though I suppose it's the excuse the government want to say 'we haven't told you to shut down completely' and therefore avoid having to offer financial support.

I don't think there'll be lockdown till after Christmas, and probably not till January.

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 13:43

I don't know this nurse, my husband is good friends with the man and saw him yesterday.
I was surprised too to be honest , especially as my own local hospital is always under pressure and hasn't the best reputation.
I'm lucky to have stayed out of it for years!

So a friend of of a friend said the locals hospitals in Essex are Covid free?

Oh well that's reliable.

I live in Essex, this is utter bollocks. Picture attached of the actual number of beds occupied by Covid patients. It's not hard to find.

Up 25% on last week.

You might want to pass it back through the chain to this 'nurse'.

Will travel abroad be permitted?

Opus17 · 18/12/2021 13:56

I'm with you, op. We're meant to be flying on Tuesday too. Home to Scotland, first time in 2 and a half years. I've been up and down with anxiety for weeks now. Fingers crossed we make it. I'm desperate to see my family x

Quartz2208 · 18/12/2021 14:04

I dont think it is currently suggested it will be like last January - as a PP said it is very much about going back to April last year as we started to come out of it. So restrictions rather than an actual lockdown.

Borders I dont think will be shut - they have quite high level control on them at the moment and it would decimate the industry.

Angrymum22 · 18/12/2021 14:05

If half the population have Covid there will be no need for lockdown since they will all be self isolating. It will be chaos but at least after a couple of weeks we will be free of Covid🤣

Angrymum22 · 18/12/2021 14:09

I meant to add maybe now is the time to stock up on loo rolls.
I did a big shop yesterday that will see us through until the New Year.
I suspect that it won’t be hospitals that are hit but if supermarket delivery drivers and supermarket staff are infected then anyone smugly relying on their delivery slot may be up the creek this week.

Malibuismysecrethome · 18/12/2021 14:11

They won’t lock us dow before Christmas, maybe from Boxing Day

FruitToast · 18/12/2021 14:13

Well my Christmas plans have already been disrupted by catching covid (brought home from primary school via DD) and travel restrictions. Not that we could have travelled anyway now as France have shut their border to us. So we're already on plan B Christmas and frantically ordering DC Christmas presents and rearranging plans, may as well formulate a plan C.

On the plus side, assuming we're free to travel next year, Christmas 2022 has already been organised!

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 14:14

I'm going out on Monday to get things like loo rolls , tinned / freezer things.
I think next week will be critical for the figures for the hospitals and so on and a decision will have to made by then , they should have much better data by then too I would imagine ?
Still can't see people being on board at all , especially the triple vaxxed ones!

Malibuismysecrethome · 18/12/2021 14:20

I think this disruption will go on for the next few years with us gradually getting used to our freedoms being eroded. Either the vaccine works or it doesn’t. We are saving the NHS but people are going A&E because they can’t get seen at GPs.

PavlovaTheRainbow · 18/12/2021 14:23

@the80sweregreat you’re a shining ray of common sense aren’t you, there’s no covid in Essex hospitals but you plan to run out and panic buy.
I think they will have to do something but hope it won’t come into force until after Christmas. It would be a bit concerning to see normal new year celebrations going ahead. I don’t mean small family gatherings but the partying that usually goes on with 1000s crammed together.
I hope schools will stay open though, after the stories we have all seen in the news with children being abused at home, can they really justify shutting them again for more than a couple of weeks?

vjg13 · 18/12/2021 14:23

Agree with PP that I think restrictions will be for after 28th. Public compliance would be so poor if before then.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/12/2021 14:24

I don't think you can introduce a circuit breaker in the middle of the Christmas BH weekend, surely? How is that going to work? A lot of people will already be ensconced with wider family groups. There will also be loads of students at home 'en famille' who will likely need to criss-cross the country to get back to their student accommodation for illicit NYE celebrations.

LemonCake79 · 18/12/2021 14:25

According to The Telegraph they are discussing reducing the isolation period to 7 days, not a circuit breaker. They are usually very reliable with their Covid news.

faerin · 18/12/2021 14:28

@Thewiseoneincognito

Is this another My Family My rules, I’m not locking myself away, will not comply tantrum echo chamber again?
People frightened that our (clearly utterly hypocritical) government are controlling their personal lives is not exactly having a "temper tantrum", is it now?
lalahotpants · 18/12/2021 14:31

I'm working the whole of Christmas and off new year, looks like I won't be getting my Christmas after all 😥

Autumndays123 · 18/12/2021 14:33

I can't believe there are people still talking about going out and getting enough toilet roll and tinned food for the next few weeks. Baffled. Crazy to this these people walk among us in society

MrsLarry · 18/12/2021 14:34

Erm, no. Not me. Got other things to be thinking about tbh.

Tbh I think it’s wise to make sure you have got staples in, not because of lockdowns but issues in the supply chain caused by staff sickness.
GoodPrincessWenceslas · 18/12/2021 14:36

Why go crazy? Plan in case there is one, then relax. Either it'll happen or it won't, worrying yourself into a frenzy about it won't achieve anything.

Figgygal · 18/12/2021 14:36

I dint spend time worrying abiut something thats Not gonna happen
I understand the fear around travel though i usually fly home for xmas or new year but travelling with kids, prospect of high case numbers, limited opportunity to see friends due to nervousness around covid decided against it this year

Autumndays123 · 18/12/2021 14:37

@Cornettoninja no. It's the toilet roll hoarders and petrol snatchers who cause agro for the rest of society with their hysterical and selfish thinking

Do you honestly think it is extreme to have a few weeks of food and other supplies in? I would think it pretty sensible to have enough to get through a period of isolation at least.
