Anyone else going crazy waiting to hear when we’re going to be locked down …

… there’s a weekend meeting of SAGE & government…Oh the anxiety.

I’m supposed to be flying to see my family for Christmas on Tuesday. I am kicking myself for not booking to go earlier! If they announce lockdown before Christmas we’re all shafted aren’t we …?!

Yes....hurry up and make a bloody decision. OK they might not have 'all the info' but they need to take a view and make a judgement call.
Waiting around is building up discontent with people and businesses need to know what's going on so they can make plans (mine being one of them!)

Isaidnomorecrisps · 19/12/2021 18:38

It’s the maths? It’s only about the country ending up without enough NHS support and too many sick people to help.
Do the posters here not believe that lockdown will flatten the peak? It always has. Or that the numbers won’t be that big? Best and worst case attached, from the BBC.
I don’t think the government knows - that’s what Javid said on Marr and makes sense. Depends on what happens with numbers and beds.

Those saying they don’t give a sh*t and will carry on - go ahead, no one’s stopping you.

I'm starting to think lockdown won't happen. I know there is a delay from cases to hospitalisations but we're not seeing anything like we were in the beginning or last January in terms of cases/deaths? As far as I'm aware no country where Omicron is spreading is?
I think they are waiting to see hospitalisation figures before doing something.

Retired65 · 19/12/2021 18:43

My son and his wife are hoping to join us for Christmas at my daughter's in Gloucestershire. He hasn't a car and hopes to come by train. He is waiting to the last possible minute to book train tickets as he is worried the government will pull the plug for over Christmas. I wish the government would decide soon!

OrangeCrunch · 19/12/2021 18:52

Does anyone think we'll actually hear something tonight? I know not an official announcement but via another leak.

htfdth · 19/12/2021 19:00

I've been reading these threads over the weekend and getting more concerned. Ultimately we are self locking down.. not running the risk of catching Covid over the festive period is the main aim for most I'd say. I'm convinced I'll be back to school of mum in January and the kids will vilified yet again as super spreaders and the keyworker golden ticket abused once again. Only this time I'm giving zero f*cks!

Retired65 · 19/12/2021 19:07

The last thing the Government will want to do is close schools. They may though, delay the date of starting back. The Government should not have stopped the order of wearing masks in the first place and the socially distancing rules.

FancySomeChips · 19/12/2021 19:16

If a lockdown is announced I will comply completely.
And so will 98% of the people I know.

I’m a single parent, live in a flat blah blah blah …but I am more than prepared to do what we have to to protect the vulnerable and the NHS. Our poor NHS staff are on their absolute knees, so auntie Sharon will have to bunk up in the box room or the living room floor if needs be, if she can’t be alone for a few wks.
I have no time for selfish people “but in my family…..” blah blah blah.
We are all missing people, we all find it hard, I just don’t pander to the self centred.

Bellee11 · 19/12/2021 19:25

It's so frustrating. We should have had a circuit breaker a week ago, then maybe we could have had a 'normal' Xmas. They should also prioritise schools going back instead of waiting too long to take action. Once again they are letting things escalate to the detriment of our children Angry

This attitude is also self centred. Don't try and pretend you're morally superior.

How would it work when it’s lifted

Wouldn’t cases just shoot up again?

Most of my family is elderly. I'm not going to miss what could easily be their last Christmas and if that makes me self centred in your opinion I wouldn't really care.

TBF (something I hardly ever say about the government) the decision has been made:
  • decide to lock down and you only make the decision once (per lockdown)
  • decide not to and you have to make that same decision several times over: not today, not today, not today etc.

No news today suggests today's decision has been made. And probably tomorrow's as well. Tuesday onwards decisions cannot be made this early.

Or something like that Grin

THEDEACON · 19/12/2021 19:43

@Katie517 your family your rules fair enough but not when your selfishness impacts me and mine!

Nobody needs your approval. Who cares who you do or don't 'pander' to?

Especially as, going by the very nasty tone of your post, you sound quite unpleasant and not at all selfless.

I've heard announcement will be on Boxing Day and restrictions from the 27th but who knows 🤷‍♀️

Perhaps look at yourself before you call others self centred.

Btw I'm vulnerable - please don't use people like me as a stick with which to beat those whose MH is in the toilet, who have lost livelihoods, who have grieved alone and who have suffered loss of every kind imaginable. There are many, many kinds of vulnerable and not all of them a physical, by far.

are physical

I haven't heard this but wouldn't be surprised at the time line Confused
Morgysmum · 19/12/2021 19:53

No,
But been keyworkers, both myself and my partner, would be going to work as normal and our son would go to school. So a lockdown, wouldn't bother us. I wasn't working in the first one of this year, but I was OK, my son is teenager, so he wasn't too much hard work.
Just rember they are saying 2 weeks, I know it can be hard on people, but rember this, as a farmers child, lockdown is how my 6 weeks school holidays went every year, we only went shopping once a week, I didn't see any of my friends till I went back to school, we did get out for more than 1 hours exercise, but didn't leave the farm. If we were lucky our grandparents would take us to the beach, for 1 day out of the 6 weeks. This is normal for all farmers. I guess that's why lockdown didn't faze me, I grew up with a version on lockdown on the farm.

ginforever · 19/12/2021 20:01

Not going crazy. No

Just waiting, it’s inevitable at this point..ridiculously inevitable and utterly annoying after all that we’ve done not to be in this position again really…

It probably wouldn't bother me if I had a farm-sized garden and a toddler who wasn't an only child with nobody to play with in a lockdown except me and DH, while we are trying to work.

We'll be ok as long as they open nurseries.

Chuck2015 · 19/12/2021 20:11

Some like us will have booked to go away after Xmas because we are not lucky enough to have relatives around. It’s also my birthday and my partners over the next ten days so yep I’m really really pissed with this despicable government and please don’t say it was inevitable…Japan have 193 cases and we have 90,000. That’s 2 years running of ruined Xmas and birthdays because of their greed, incompetence and arrogance. It will be worth it though if people stop voting Tory

GinPin2 · 19/12/2021 20:45

Who knows ? I really wish we did.
We have had 3 holidays in holiday homes in the Southwest cancelled since April 2020.
So we should be going to Bude on 29th.
Four families, 3 generations.
With the bubbles of last year we would be 2 bubbles but 15 of us although one son in law has already been told he may be recalled back to Scotland just after Christmas ( submariner ) to help with Covid vaccinations. .
All triple vaccinated , except for the children all under 12.

We are a very sensible extended family following all rules.
Obviously the decision, if one needs to be made, will be the responsibility of the holiday company / owner of property but we so want to and need to go.
Does anyone rate our chances? Is there any hope for a holiday in this country for 15 starting on 29th December?
