Anyone else going crazy waiting to hear when we’re going to be locked down …

… there’s a weekend meeting of SAGE & government…Oh the anxiety.

I’m supposed to be flying to see my family for Christmas on Tuesday. I am kicking myself for not booking to go earlier! If they announce lockdown before Christmas we’re all shafted aren’t we …?!

Which he will. They clearly don't want to pay out again

"They" means us though. For how many years are we prepared to ask our children to pay for this?

Exactly… that’s how I feel too.

It’s easy to say lockdown as if there is a never ending stream of finance but it isn’t sustainable long term.

I don’t have an answer, which I why I have some (just a little) sympathy for the government.

Lockdown is basically like pouring tax payers hard earned money down the toilet. Ok for emergency / short term only

@justasking111

Well Wales, Scotland and Ireland will go their own way the only brake being if Rishi says no furlough.
Northern Ireland. Ireland has already introduced stricter measures.

I'm hoping what Whitty said about a "hairpin" peak is right. Flies up and down quickly.

Peakedtoosoon · 19/12/2021 16:05

Surely the aim of lockdowns is to flatten the peak, so if we have a lockdown, the peak won't be over quickly?

Maybe its possible to have multiple different reasons for a lockdown according to the current situation.

That might mean at this stage the purpose might be different to previous lockdowns.

This one might be about giving time to maximise booster take up, and therefore reduce the compound effect of cases going forward which WOULD potentially shortened things in the long run.

Just y'know, thinking.

(This is getting really tedious now that people can't not comprehend that this is Quite Complicated and there may be more than one reason to have restrictions which are equally as compelling).

"I'm annoyed that I have to stop my Christmas celebrations because people can't be bothered to be locked down in January and February"

It seems emotions are running high on this thread and people aren't thinking clearly.

I'll come back later.

Love the way you picked that part of my message to highlight. You were the one angry with people who didn't want to scale back over Christmas so lockdown in January didn't happen. I was trying to illustrate that there will be others wanting the exact opposite.

Personally we don't have many plans. My DC were off school the last week and by the time Xmas day comes they will have been at home for 2 weeks. Me and DH work from home. My parents are coming for Xmas who also don't go out far and we have no other plans.

Saying that I'm not that fussed about a lockdown in January either because as I said we both work from home but I have enough empathy that I can see that others may not be able to do the same and may struggle with lockdowns.

fetchacloth · 19/12/2021 17:26

It's likely to be straight after Christmas I would think. It's way too late to be shutting everything up for Christmas but maybe in time for new year.

Finally people posting this. The idea of ‘they’ has to go.

It’s us, and worse still our dc.

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 19/12/2021 17:28

Lockdowns are for prisons, not free people.

aliceca · 19/12/2021 17:30

Sure we dont have to pay out compensation to businesses. We could just carry on and many people will lock themselves down, and some businesses will go under.

Whyyyyyyyohhhhhwhyyyyyy · 19/12/2021 17:37

I'm not stressing about it, mostly because I won't be complying and il be seeing family and friends regardless of what is said. I've done my bit for the last nearly 3 years I'm not doing anymore.

notoldjustpastyoung · 19/12/2021 17:44

What's the point of worrying yourself frantic, if it happens, it happens and it's very sad for everyone planning Xmas BUT it would be even sadder if one of your friends or family got Covid or the other and died. During the war whe the siren went you got underground whether you like it or not, rather than have a bomb drop on you. Don't waste you energy. We're all in the same boat.

But surely 100% of people would rather just have a smaller christmas than endure a full national lockdown all of January and February with schools and businesses closed. Anyone who disagrees feel free to chime in.

nannygoat50 · 19/12/2021 17:48

They won’t . Because nobody will take any notice . I think they may do after Christmas though. 29 December is my guess 🤷‍♀️

Your bit was trying to comply your way out of government overreach. It didn't work and you put us all in this mess.
Immaculatemisconception · 19/12/2021 17:54

I don't believe we will be locked down.

It won't be an "either or" though, that's the problem. Guarantee a 2 week "circuit breaker" will be extended.

People won't lockdown then either. It's new year and a lot of people have made arrangements for then too.

There is no chance at all that i'll be cancelling my plans for Boris after the shit the Tories have pulled. I say it on every thread, but while they were laughing behind our backs, having people over for Christmas, having parties etc some of us were watching people die, alone and terrified, without their relatives even at the window to their hospital rooms.

But it was ok for them to see their colleagues. Not even their cklose family. Their colleagues.

They can all fuck off until after January quite frankly.

Cutesbabasmummy · 19/12/2021 18:14

@Angrymum22 I'm "smugly" relying on a delivery slot this week because I'm a key worker, my husband is NHS so we are both flat out and I'm extremely clinically vulnerable. But as long as you've got your toilet rolls and pasta I guess that's fineXmas Hmm

3 years? Confused

It has been 1 year, 8 months, and 26 days since the first lockdown on 23rd March 2020.

lightisnotwhite · 19/12/2021 18:27

Would be lovely if they stopped big venues from operating next week. Then DH could spend Christmas with us instead if working

It’s an ill wind that blows no good.

PatienceOfEngels · 19/12/2021 18:29

@User5329806

As of today we're in hard lockdown - everything closed including schools.

Still allowed to see some family in your house though, unlike us in England when we have lockdown

I would love to see my family, except they're in the UK and I live in the Netherlands. Managed a few days with my parents in the summer when they changed the travel restrictions before our schools went back, but haven't seen my siblings/nieces/nephews for 2 years now.
Oblomov21 · 19/12/2021 18:31

Anxiety? Going crazy? I don't understand this drivel. You can't control things outside of your jurisdiction. They teach you this on every single MH course. So, this level of anxiety is not sensible.

If they have a circuit breaker after Boxing Day, so be it.
