Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

@Skinnytailedsquirrel

Some people are so pathetic and selfish

How much of an inconvenience is putting a mask on. Get a grip.

You are saving lives.

Have you heard yourself? Many of the people who don't want to wear a mask are the elderly or vulnerable people YOU reckon to be 'protecting'.
ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 27/11/2021 23:38

Flowers @orangechairs, might add that OTHERS wearing masks will help stop you dying from COVID. Wishing you recovery.

VioletRose91 · 27/11/2021 23:38

I’m confused, do we have to wear the masks in pubs bars again or only shops?

Northsoutheastwest76 · 27/11/2021 23:38

well we were told this would not be returning. This is not normal life

I don't recall this ever being said.

@Jouleigh my aspergers dd is just the same. Even wears a mask in the car with me and outside. Yet I do of course get that lots more can't.

@ElvisPresleyHadABaby

Surely you can cope with wearing a small square of fabric over your nose and mouth while in public? It's really not a huge ask IMO.
10 hours a day at work? 5 days a week? nah, not happening this time round
Allycott · 27/11/2021 23:39

@Mischance

What a fucked up world Well ....that's what viruses do .... they fuck up our lives. Just a fact of life - however much we hate it. We can't just lie back and wait for the virus to kill more people.

If we do nothing then the virus will be rubbing its hands in glee and taking the opportunity to produce more variants. And then more.

Either we put up a fight or we don't.

Why are you personifying a virus?
gofg · 27/11/2021 23:39

Well said @vera99. Where I live we wear masks on public tansport and inside public buildings, and people just get on with it. The level of complaining on MN is ridiculous.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 27/11/2021 23:40

I also love how people that don't want to wear masks suddenly care about the hearing impaired/disabled/trauma victims, yet when it comes to protecting the vulnerable from COVID it's suddenly "we're all going to die anyway"....

you don't 'have' to wear them anywhere if you don't want to...theres no law being enforced or anything
Flyonawalk · 27/11/2021 23:40

Professor Carl Heneghan, professor of evidence-based medicine at the University of Oxford, has spoken publicly and extensively about how masks are ineffective against spread of viruses, and about how they are a psychological tool only.

It is incredible to me that people are still willing to wear them, and that some people berate others for not doing so.

Face coverings will become mandatory again in shops and on public transport in England from next week under a raft of measures to target the new Covid variant, Omicron, the PM has said

That's from BBC News. Although if you were to find yourself in a packed bar or pub it's not a bad idea.

@xxxGirlCrushxxx Like surgeons, dentists and other HCPs have been doing for decades?

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 27/11/2021 23:41

So many selfish people. I despair.

BHX3000 · 27/11/2021 23:41

@xxxGirlCrushxxx next time you need an operation for example, I assume you'd be happy for your surgeons and nurses to ditch the masks too? They're working 10h shifts too at the end of the day...

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 27/11/2021 23:44
@xxxGirlCrushxxx Like surgeons, dentists and other HCPs have been doing for decades?
maybe. but they take them off between patients....and not in a physical role up and down ladders, using heavy machinery or running around a busy warehouse. big difference...but its a moot point as its not happening

TempsPerdu · 27/11/2021 23:44

The measure of the mental health of the nation is not suicide rates

Amen to that. I’m privileged, middle class, fairly insulated from the worst pandemic fallout. So are most of my friends. But almost everyone I know is now low level depressed, especially the women who have struggled to keep everything (and everyone) going for the past 18 months. Several have newly diagnosed MH conditions. Lots of teens with clinical anxiety or OCD waiting for CAMHS support (good luck with that). One MH issue directly related to wearing a mask in school. My own MIL attempted suicide after the first lockdown.

Everyone is ground down. Everyone has lost their spark.

yes thats what they signed up for.
whatthej3ff · 27/11/2021 23:46

I couldnt agree more with you op.

This definitely wasn't the place to post as it's notorious for being overrun with those on the other side of the debate and you will get a whirlwind of abuse thrown your way.

Your 100% not on your own in feeling this way.

Unfortunately this will fall on deaf ears. Mob mentality rules supreme here.
Rimbaudcolours · 27/11/2021 23:46

@sst1234

You are not wrong OP. Many many many people among us have been taken in by an irrational fear and almost enjoy having restrictions placed upon them because it makes them feel safe. They don’t mind being infantilized. The problem is these people really struggle to think for themselves. They struggle to see beyond the headlines. Their enthusiasm for lockdowns and other restrictions is doing untold damage to people’s lives. It is literally destroying peoples health - yes not Covid but the restrictions will kill more people in the long run. Young peoples futures are being put on the line, people’s mental health is being sacrificed. But hey, what does that all matter, when you can wear a mask to feel all warm and fuzzy inside and then go into full lockdown because you can work from home or watch movies all day with the kids on furlough.
My thoughts exactly. Thank you
TreborBore · 27/11/2021 23:47

@vera99

Am on Fuenteventura in the Canary Islands at the moment. Very nice people wear masks 100% on public transport ,shops enclosed spaces without any sense of grievance or entitlement. The British in some respects are a curmudgeonly people who get the government and society they deserve. Not everybody of course but we carry a rump of Brit exceptionalmists who ruin it for everyone else.
👏👏👏

Same in France. So many selfish and precious people in England.

vera99 · 27/11/2021 23:47

Was at an outside music festival in Puert de Rosario half the folk voluntarily wear them outside on socially distanced seats in the public square. Watched a school class enjoying themselves all masked outside their school. Kids probably 3 or 4 years old on the public transport wearing masks without issue. Making start to hate Britain in some respects not just Brexit but this almost Trumpian 'freedom่ trope which is nothing of the sort. Johnsons perpetual mavericism continually sets the wrong tone and leadership.

MMMarmite · 27/11/2021 23:48

I don't want lockdown back, but masks don't bother me, I think they ought to have been required on public transport all along.

Flyonawalk · 27/11/2021 23:48

@KurtWildesChristmasNamechange Sadly I think you are right.
