This seems really concerning. I personally am in favour of the vaccination and I think care home staff should be vaccinated but this seems like a massive shortage of staff to compensate for in an industry that is already having difficulty with recruitment. What is the government doing to ensure vulnerable patients are getting the care they need?

I’ve no idea how night staff manage to stay awake and remain sharp enough to carry out any duties, hats off to them!

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/11/2021 09:26

I work nights in a dementia unit, in charge of 2 carers and 30 residents. Always kept busy, someone ringing for help. Got plenty of cleaning to do as well, between 3 and 4 am is the hardest as you hit a wall.

@MercyBooth

Exactly. Im still trying to access my second which is why i stood in Sainsburys this afternoon and laughed at the headline on the i paper and thats how the conversation started.
Why? Just book it. You should be coming up to a booster by this stage,

Yeah, always plenty to do on nights in a dementia unit! On top of the domestic jobs that nightstaff traditionally do too. And just to point out that this is a ratio of 1 staff member to 10 residents, all with dementia (I presume of different stages) that's generally the 'standard' staff: residents ratio, 1 staff member for every 10 residents, if this is anything like my unit, around a quarter will require 2 staff members to deliver care. 1 staff member to 10 residents. Do we think this is enough?

I had the vaccine
I’m sick as a ducking dog
This isn’t fair

@Pippi1970

The unvaccinated in Australia can't dance in public or drink standing up.
Well this is just untrue. I live in Western Australia, we don't even have to wear masks here, and the unvaxxed can do both those things. Different states here have different rules. In this state they have mandated vaccines for about 75% of all workers, most people are all for it, as am I. Our health service here will not be able to cope with large covid numbers, hopefully it won't have to.

@Saltyquiche

There is no evidence that the vaccination stops the virus spread
I would consider MMR as a vaccine this certainly helps the spread. They all work in the same way

I'm surprised you're not aware. Mercy repeats her story if it's relevant to a thread or not. It's difficult to believe sourcing a second Moderna vaccine is so bloody difficult in a first-world country - even given there has been some supply issues.

Brilliant post. Absolutely nails it what it’s like to work in a care home. I did it for 5 years and it’s really hard and until you’ve done that work yourself, you have no idea.
People do it because they love to care.
Refusing the vaccine isn’t about not caring, it’s about putting your own concerns first, nothing wrong with that.

Comments like “ well they’re obviously not very bright” are so incredibly offensive, due to the low pay you must be stupid.
You know what, if people are that concerned then look after your elderly relative yourself!!
Care workers are just guinea pigs and nobody gives a shit about them until they stand up for themselves and quit.
Good on them. Everyone just loves to criticise and judge. WTF is wrong with this site?!?
People calling other people who choose no to comply with a hideous mandate are mentally unstable and “need to do some research”.
Why isn’t anyone asking with HCP’s are refusing? Do you think it’s possible they may have seen the damage.

NSW does not equal Australia. As I said in my post, different states have different rules.
