That’s great news.

PumpkinPie2016 · 27/07/2021 16:09

Agreed @2X4B523P - really positive!

Deaths seem higher today but I think that's reporting lags because if you look at 'date of death's there isn't any big jump.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 16:19

My msoa has dropped from 1300/100k to 840/100k in the last 5 days. I mean, I know there is more movement the smaller the population size, but that's crazy right?

Anyway, I'll take it.

I’m sure they also had a couple of days where they were having problems with the death figures.

I am very surprised but also really glad at the low figure today!

TheVampiresWife · 27/07/2021 16:50

@2X4B523P

Wow, 23,511 new cases today, which is very good especially for a Tuesday. Last Tuesday was 46,125 cases.
Flipping heck Shock

Nah, this is looking good and I'm cautiously moving from cautiously optimistic to bloody optimistic.

Especially when you consider that lots of clubs/venues opened at 12.01am last Monday morning - infections from the first day or two of reopening should be starting to come through by now, surely?

Half of last Tuesday's infections though, wow.

Was around 1500/100k about two weeks ago where I am, now look. We had LOADS of clubs/venues open from the early hours of last Monday too, we're a city famous for our night life which has been very busy in the past week.

Wow new case numbers have halved since last Tuesday?

2X4B523P · 27/07/2021 17:10

@TheVampiresWife

Was thinking the same about the night clubs and also when can we see an increase due to the reduction in face mask use? I’ve seen a reduction of anywhere from about 10% to 30% in different venues but yesterday evening in my local Sainsbury’s those without a mask were greater than those with. Maybe they don’t really make much difference and time will tell.

Furloughlaylow · 27/07/2021 17:13

Cautiously hopeful, though i don't understand, following lifting of restrictions a week ago, why on earth there would be less positives?

Plus with numbers are down, is so many getting pinged than ever before - hence 500 test centres for critical workers being set up.

Bit stable door if we are on the way out of this.

Could be the sheer numbers isolating (combined with vaccines) and having run through younger population at speed.

Theres only so many people who it can infect.

Many schools have been closed for over a week, many people aren’t testing so they don’t have to isolate and miss going out over the summer break etc.

marieantoinehairnet · 27/07/2021 17:40

We because you can't get a test, tried to book one earlier, it wanted me to travel a very long way, I'm talking over 100 miles, I'm not doing that obviously, I'll just stay home

Many schools have been closed for over a week, many people aren’t testing so they don’t have to isolate and miss going out over the summer break etc.

But as others have pointed out, the schools being closed (and fyi -many have only been closed for 1.5 days so far, NOT a full week) is counter balanced by nightclubs being reopened for over a week now and other hospitality fully functioning again.

Also, the positivity rate has dropped, so there IS less testing, but the cases are proportionately still lower.

How do you explain these two things?

Teeheehee1579 · 27/07/2021 17:43

@TheVampiresWife

Also, it's funny how the statistics are 'meaningless' when they show cases decreasing, and are absolutely 100% to be believed when they're rocketing Confused
This sums up mumsnet on covid perfectly for me - could not agree more! Hurrah for that latest stats.

It's as @siestalady says, though. Schools have only been closed since last Friday where I am, but numbers have been falling for well over a week now - as I posted earlier, our rates have more than halved in around a fortnight. And that's despite our many, many nightclubs being open since 12.01am last Monday and every night since!

I agree that this is really good news - but we wouldn't be seeing the effect of reopening (clubs etc) just yet, would we? Surely that's another week or so down the line?

SilverGlassHare · 27/07/2021 17:53

@siestalady Icecream doesn’t understand positivity rates - negativity is more her type of thing.

SexTrainGlue · 27/07/2021 18:02

There have been sustained falls for about a week now. Thus is really encouraging and suggests the Euro footie bounce is behind us in terms of new cases (hospital admissions, arguably the the more important measure now) continues to rise, but I wouid expect that to level off and start falling very soon. There's always about a week's lag between cases and admissions, and then again between admissions and deaths.

Now it's fingers crossed for how cases move now - there could still be more of the exit wave to go (trajectory would have been different without the Euros mixing)l. But right now, it's encouraging

SpnBaby1967 · 27/07/2021 18:02

MN only believes the govt data if it's bad news, good news is to be thoroughly rubbished and dismissed and someone will yell "schools".

I think its brilliant news however. Noble will along soon though to threaten us with september.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 27/07/2021 18:09

@siestalady,

I don’t think nightclubs ‘balance’ schools. The vast majority of nightclub customers are vaccinated and the majority now double vaccinated. I don’t know how many clabbers there are on the average night, but I would wager 10s of thousands.

Schools (and unis, which finished earlier, and you seem to have forgotten), on the other hand contain millions of totally Unvaccinated.

If 92% of the population really have antibodies, and the r number is 6, we should have reached herd immunity. Confirmation will (hopefully) be given by hospitalisation rates declining in the next few days, the lag is about 8 days.

People who became infected on the first couple of days of opening (so last Sunday and Monday nights) would be starting to test positive in the last day or two.

TheVampiresWife · 27/07/2021 18:14

Almost all the clubs near me ask for proof of vaccination/natural immunity/recent negative test - there are posters on all their doors. I've got to say, I'm impressed with the way venues have handled it, especially given there's no requirement for them to do so.

Nowhere had similar rules during the football. We had a couple of 'fanzones' here and the bars were all packed.

Lots of graduations this weekend so many university towns and cities full of students partying.
Lots of graduation club nights. DS has been to 4 on successive nights Grin.

HelloMissus · 27/07/2021 18:17

But I’m not quite sure why people want to somehow discount the significant drop in cases.
Is it because they swore down that easing restrictions would result in cases sky-rocketing and they can’t let go of that prediction?
