@HelloMissus

But I’m not quite sure why people want to somehow discount the significant drop in cases. Is it because they swore down that easing restrictions would result in cases sky-rocketing and they can’t let go of that prediction?
I read today that it's looking increasingly unlikely that we'll ever reach 100k cases a day now. Before anyone files this away to crow remind me should this ever happen, this is not necessarily my view (although it's definitely my hope). I'm just reporting what I've seen elsewhere.

I do think that some people won't let go of their doomy predictions. In a way I can understand it - fear makes you want to prepare for/expect the worst, and most of us have been at least a bit scared over the past year and a half. Hopefully though we haven't all shared misinformation and stoked fear and anxiety because of it.

Yeah, there is definitely a sudden change in the messaging today.

A lot of cautious optimism.

For weeks now it has just doom and fear.

Mickarooni · 27/07/2021 19:11

I don’t know if everyone is unprepared to let go of the doom. I felt quite negative and fed up when I saw cases rising, expecting bad times ahead. I’m pleased and feeling lifted as the numbers decline. :)

SunbathingDragon · 27/07/2021 19:16

I’m thrilled cases are going down and sincerely hope the stats are accurate. I think we can be much more optimistic in a few more days when we can see if hospital admissions and deaths are following the trend, as we are would expect to happen with fewer cases.

@SpnBaby1967

MN only believes the govt data if it's bad news, good news is to be thoroughly rubbished and dismissed and someone will yell "schools".

I think its brilliant news however. Noble will along soon though to threaten us with september.

I think it is brilliant news - but I would like to feel that someone understood why it is happening before rejoicing too much, if that makes sense?

My feeling is that it has caught EVERYONE on the hop and, while everyone has different theories about what has caused it, no one factor quite seems to make sense with the data. Because we don't understand why it has gone down, I can't be sure it won't bounce back up again for similarly unexplained reasons and thus can't quite relax.

As it is coincident in time - noting that correlation does not indicate causation - with a period in which schools have been shutting (through isolations, through parental withdrawals and also due to a staggered end of term, from early July for private schools through to last Friday for a small minority of councils), I can't quite be confident that it WON'T reverse when schools re-open. Equally, because there are some things about the correlation that indicate it might not be causally linked (see NI schools, and the age groups testing positive most being slightly over school age), I can't be confident it WILL reverse then.

(I would also say that at a personal level, I know more people who have tested positive over the last 3 weeks than at any previous point in the pandemic, with more falling ill daily - and while i can intellectually cope with the cognitive dissonance of this vs dramatically falling cases nationwide, emotionally I am still finding it hard to feel positive.)

@siestalady

Careful Grin they will be after you with that comment 😀

GoldenOmber · 27/07/2021 19:39

Maybe, right bear with me here, maybe opening nightclubs reduces infections? Because the virus runs away from thumping choonz?

No, I have no idea either. Good news though! 🤷‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 27/07/2021 19:51

I wouldn’t appreciate that from doomsters I would ‘I was wrong’ though. That’s be nice!

Here’s hoping they were.

Dustyboots · 27/07/2021 20:26

About 2 weeks ago so many people here on MN, elsewhere on social media and in rl were saying it was impossible to get a PCR test. That seems to have been forgotten now, although it may be still the case

At the time people were saying it has been rigged to bring case numbers down. Surely that’s why they are low now?

Getting a PCR has never been an issue where I am, and I'll refer you back to the massive drop in cases here. Over 1000 fewer this week than last.

Besides, why would a shortage of tests a fortnight ago be affecting the figures today?

I’ve not experienced this, DC2 had a cough at nursery on Tuesday last week. Nursery asked for a PCR. They finished nursery at 3:45pm they had their PCR at 5:30pm. There were problems with online booking and we had to phone in the end, so I’d say if you’re having problems booking online then phone them to see if there’s anything available.

For a completely different reason I ended up in children’s A&E with DC1 on Sunday. We went by ambulance which we were told was up to a 40 minute wait (arrived in 7 minutes thankfully) and then we were moved to the children’s assessment and treatment centre. They were very busy. We were there from 12:45pm to about 7pm and there was a steady stream of patients all day. We only left the ward to for an hour or so to go for a CT scan so saw lots of the comings and goings.

There were lots of tiny tiny babies in with breathing and feeding issues and a couple of kids with bad insect bites that needed checking.

Dustyboots · 27/07/2021 20:41

I thought they were still difficult to get now -but haven’t needed one, so don’t know ...

I hope infections are dropping - but believe nothing anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if figures were all made up. Our country is run by liars and charlatans.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 20:56

Our country is run by liars and charlatans

Don't you think people would be a lot louder about their complaints if tens of thousands of people are being denied access to PCR tests each and every day for a week- which is what you are suggesting? I imagine at this points scientists would have put two and two together and figured out that this was an artificial deflation. Even Jessica Fletcher could riddle that one out before the first advert. Or are all the scientists in cahoots too - and all media outlets?

Dustyboots · 27/07/2021 21:22

Our country is run by liars and charlatans

I don’t care about facts and figures - but I do care that our country is run by liars and charlatans.

luckylavender · 27/07/2021 21:28

@TheVampiresWife - although many parents took their children out early so as not to ruin holidays. Government has also removed reinfected people (from any date) & is rumoured to have removed the vaccinated from the data too. Let's wait and see.

newnortherner111 · 27/07/2021 21:29

I am wondering if the end of Euro 2020 is now starting to have an impact, together with school holidays (or enforced school closures last week).

GoldenOmber · 27/07/2021 21:30

That’s not true.

That's correct - this has been debunked (links are on another recent thread, apologies but I can't remember which).

GoldenOmber is right

Some seem very keen to have high cases even when they are dropping which is odd
