Anyone any idea if this is going to be anything dramatic or just a 'be careful' pep talk?

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/07/2021 18:50

Vaccinated people only is about the only thing that will give these venues a chance of staying open.

The alternative is closing them down again. There isn’t really another option.

lompolo · 19/07/2021 18:51

Vaccines aren't compulsory and not becoming so. Just like driving licences aren't compulsory......

Like many areas of life, if you want to do something, you will have to follow the rules.

XenoBitch · 19/07/2021 18:51

@crapshow

My 18 year old son is now at breaking point. He has had all the usual rites of passage torn away from him, a shit Uni experience locked in a room unable to socialize like a human being, no normal human relationship allowed to develop and on and on. He does not want the vaccine and has just said he will be forced to just "live". Has gone out in tears so I'll be worrying now for the rest of the night. It's fucking scandalous what they are doing. As others have said we are now living in a "dystopian society" and a "George Orwell" novel. Maybe my son is right. If they restrict you "living" what is the actual point?
I feel for your son, I really do. This whole situation is like a dystopian nightmare, and I do not blame him for how he is feeling.
clopper · 19/07/2021 18:51

I’m vaccinated but am against making it compulsory. A negative test should be enough to enter a venue.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/07/2021 18:52

Wonder how Gareth Eve feels about that.

This is Gareth Eve and why do you think I know about him?

Etinox · 19/07/2021 18:52

@unwuthering

He looks like a tired old labrador whose had a stroke.
Awww, Smile... still don’t feel sorry for the twat though.
Canigooutyet · 19/07/2021 18:53

So no consideration for us that cannot have the vaccine?
Ok I shall go and sort out a fake paper one if it comes to it. I'm not in any rush to get another smart phone.

GirlAloud · 19/07/2021 18:53

@the80sweregreat

Will Labour really vote against a vaccine passport? I can see a few tory MPs voting against it. Be interesting to see how that will pan out.
Labour may well support it, they are usually more in favour of ‘nanny state’ type policies than the Tories. I can see plenty of Tory MPs voting against it, which means that Johnson may be relying on Labour votes to get it through.

Should be interesting...

That’s a peculiar example

I hope your son is ok. I have a nearly 18 year old son. It’s been a very tough 18 months. Why does he not want the vaccine? (No judgement here, I’m not having it) I think life’s going to be really tough for younger people who refuse. 😔

MercyBooth · 19/07/2021 18:54

Like you would have compulsory vaccines to travel to certain areas

Do you work in the NHS? Because its not just politicians who are out of touch.
I live on a social housing estate. If there was a big vaccine bus come round here and they said "get your jab so you can go on holiday" they would be laughed at. You cant really threaten people with losing something they already lost due to austerity/cuts.

What Tories fail to understand is decades of them doing stuff to people of certain demographics has consequences. The distrust is there already And then instead of addressing it they want to compound it.

Comment from someone on Twitter which nails it.

If people are worried about overcrowding, how about we focus on housing security, incarceration in prisons, inappropriately designed psychiatric hospitals, decent rest spaces for workers in factories and warehouses ... and not on nightclubs Problem is, that would require us to be reflective and critical of the economic and other foundational structures upon which our society is built And moralising puritanism is just much easier

Out of genuine interest Why “can’t” you? @Canigooutyet
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/07/2021 18:54

I am not getting it due to severe needle phobia.

Lots of people are not getting the vaccine due to some sort of hesitancy/anxiety. Banning them from venues wont cure how they are feeling.. they will just feel punished for something they can not help.

Most people can help it, they just don't want it. In that case they have to live with the consequences.

Their choices are hurting the whole of society.

Tana433 · 19/07/2021 18:54

@NothinHappensAfterTwo Thats my November one as well. October is Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott. I'll be gutted to miss them.

clopper · 19/07/2021 18:54

rafels There isn’t really another option.

Isn’t testing another option? Especially as vaccinated people can still contract and pass on the virus.

jgw1 · 19/07/2021 18:54

@CrunchyCarrot

"We reserve the right to go to mandating" for installing the NHS app

Well sorry, Boris, I don't have a smart phone!

I don't understand why Boris hasn't sent me one yet, with his very important app on it. I'm sure he could give one of his mates a contract for their supply.
MaxNormal · 19/07/2021 18:54

@Canigooutyet there was some sort of mention of exemptions but I have a horrible suspicion it might be a very short list that they have decided, rather than at one's doctor's discretion.

So I guess we just have to wait a while longer to find out if we're going to be discriminated against.

Naaaaah · 19/07/2021 18:55

@the80sweregreat

My unvaccinated friend will just shrug and say ' I'll have a drink at home and not bother with pubs etc' It's her choice, but life is pretty boring without the odd night out or just going out to eat. Eventually you will get fed up with staying indoors. Plus , if you work in a school or a public place , you will have to have it done I guess : I can see that coming in too! They will get people any way they can.
Fake certificates/passports.
MercyBooth · 19/07/2021 18:56

Doing stuff to certain demographics. Yep This would fit with what i just said.

XenoBitch

How long until benefits get sanctioned if you don't have the jab.

Saucery · 19/07/2021 18:56

Bit shoddy to bring Gareth Eve into this. He has stated he is not anti-vaccination, that the move to vaccinate everyone is a good thing. But then, hijacking the grief of others for their own gain is a typical anti-vaxxer strategy so……

Sunnyfreezesushi · 19/07/2021 18:56

I don’t much like the concept of compulsory vaccination but if this virus is truly that nasty for the old and vulnerable and the vaccine truly is safe, then it is the lesser of two evils. If we want a society where people can live until old age it might be necessary.

I don’t know any anti Vaxxers who are university educated and don’t have “issues”. Some of the anti vaxxers are victims themselves, of conspiracy theories etc. Needle etc phobias should be addressed by 1 to 1 attention from a doctor and tranquilliser.
I did have some anti vaxxer hipster friends into clean living etc - but they have now relented. So these policies do work.
If it is safe then a mandatory law to vaccinate is also to protect certain communities and people lacking intelligence, victims of conspiracy theories online.

MaxNormal · 19/07/2021 18:56

Isn’t testing another option? Especially as vaccinated people can still contract and pass on the virus

That's a far more logical option, given the amount of people who are still contracting covid post vaccination course.
But this isn't about that, it's about coercing people to have it. Or honestly I'm starting to wonder if it's something even more sinister. Once you've got that app up and running and controlling people's movements, why stop at just vaccinations?

CrunchyCarrot · 19/07/2021 18:57

I am not getting it due to severe needle phobia.

Same here, plus other health issues.

Lots of people are not getting the vaccine due to some sort of hesitancy/anxiety. Banning them from venues wont cure how they are feeling.. they will just feel punished for something they can not help.

I agree. I'm mainly house bound anyway but I still worry it might affect things like going to the dentist or physio. Frightening times.

clopper · 19/07/2021 18:58

sunnyfreeze conspiracy theories

One of the conspiracy theories is that the government will make the vaccine compulsory…

MercyBooth · 19/07/2021 18:59

@NothinHappensAfterTwo Ouch. Eltons retiring then.
