Read a few articles about this this morning… I didn’t watch Chris Whitty speak. Can’t imagine him actually saying those words?

I'm an NHS worker as well - in the northwest - and things are not good here.

unwuthering · 16/07/2021 07:37

@Kate3150

I have asked for the thread to be removed, I really didn’t not mean any malice by it so hopefully it will be removed at some point today. Sorry again for any upset I’ve caused
I don't think you did anything wrong. Maybe a question mark in your title would have helped, but then the two dubious/worried smilies did that for you.
RightYesButNo · 16/07/2021 07:38

He didn’t even say “restrictions”.
No mention of the Prime Minister reconsidering.

I’m going to continue typing up the fucking quote aren’t I, because journalists can’t? Here’s what one paper claimed that he said: the Prime Minister may need to ‘look again’ at restrictions.

Hmm. Intriguing. The ONLY WORDS in quotations are “look again.” Not Prime Minister. Not restriction. Probably because he didn’t mention the Prime Minister OR restrictions. This is just unreal.

Here’s how the quote I started above continued:
“… if we think things are not topping out, we do have to look again, and see where we think things are going. So it is very important that people don’t imagine just because numbers are low now, they will always stay low. Exponential curves look as if they’re going very slowly, then suddenly, they look as if they’re going very fast, and that’s just a mess.”

That’s it. End of that quote. Then it goes back to the moderator. No restrictions. No lockdown. No mention of Prime Minister.

This is WILD.
I’ve included the YouTube clip in my last comment but the entire quote that newspapers are “stealing” single words from, mentioning how curves work, potential speed of doubling. now is from 1:03:33 to 1:05:19.

Moonme · 16/07/2021 07:38

I have lost all respect for Chris Whitty. He’s nothing but a Government mouthpiece. Removing all mitigators as cases are soaring was never going to end well. He endorsed that.

PicsInRed · 16/07/2021 07:38

@nonono1

I don’t understand. 88% of adults have had at least one dose of vaccination, and 67% have had two doses! So why are numbers going up at such a rate?!
Young men at the football. Mostly unvaccinated or partially at best, due to age, and it turns out you can enter someone else's negative test details to get a covid pass, with no verification. So there we go. 🤷‍♀️

I feel sorry for people in the UK. Outside the UK there are many knowledgeable people looking at “ Freedom Day” and seeing it as anything but freedom - the UK government is taking a huge gamble with lives.
Don't feel sorry for me hon!

I am pretty comfortable with most of what we are doing and understand the reasons for it.

I also know that if things get too bad we will slam on the brakes, but come winter, we may be in a better place than some others.

Moonme · 16/07/2021 07:39

@PicsInRed Why is it just football?! What about Wimbledon and Ascot… or does it not infect richer people?

PicsInRed · 16/07/2021 07:41

Also, seeing the country deliberately fucked over so some football fans can riot and trash watch the football, the fuck am I, as a working mother, subjecting myself or kids to anymore measures, especially isolation. Sure, I can't open the shops, but I can certainly choose how I organise my life.

Wakeupin2022 · 16/07/2021 07:42

They should have vaccinated children.

The idea that at a population level it is better for them to catch it is a nonsense.

If they are to be vaccinated it should be to protect them. CEV children should be vaccinated, and children were someone in the household was still extremely CEV after vaccine (or unable to get it).

They should not vaccinate children because too many adults have a tendency to believe conspiracy theories and misinformation and don't get vaccinated.

Mumsnet isn't represensitive of the UK, I watch the news I see the figures, I'm hoping that there isn't another massive spike in deaths but I'm seeing the figures rising so im remaining cautious It's a pandemic there are lots of twists and turns and we will just have to react to them
leafygarden42 · 16/07/2021 07:43

@vera99

Yup - precisely that. Unfortunately a lot of people don't like to hear facts as it's too upsetting.

DingleyDel · 16/07/2021 07:45

I’m uncomfortable with going for herd immunity in kids. Whilst I know they are at very very tiny risk from hospitalisation I worry about long covid for a whole generation of children. Not so much my own because they have had covid symptomless and seemingly no ill effects (touch wood) but is it a price we should pay for freedom? I just don’t know.

PicsInRed · 16/07/2021 07:45
@PicsInRed Why is it just football?! What about Wimbledon and Ascot… or does it not infect richer people?
Obviously those too - but it was football which was the "target" in terms of the probably nonsense levelling up rhetoric. It was also going to be a the biggest spreader in terms of attendee numbers and density at events (official and unofficial) throughout the country.

It was a political move and a fucking stupid one.

TheVampiresWife · 16/07/2021 07:48

@DingleyDel

I know people on MN hate hearing this kind of thing, but the NHS workers I know have said they are expecting another lockdown come the autumn.
Yes, MN does hate hearsay from friends of friends who 'work in the NHS'. It's about as reliable as an article in in The Sun.
Quartz2208 · 16/07/2021 07:52

@vera99 the problem with the data on which the tweet is based is that it is about hospitalisations between March-August 2020 and then September 2020 onwards.

But we arent in the same position with going into hospital as we were in Sept 2020 to April 2021.

what would be really helpful is stats on how vaccines effect length of time in hospital

Hollyhead · 16/07/2021 07:55

Well I wish the government luck with future lockdowns. I’m not sure I know anyone who is willing to not see friends and family again. That ship has sailed.

RightYesButNo · 16/07/2021 07:55

@Kate3150 I genuinely understand what happened. You saw the Sun’s headline. You’re absolutely exhausted of lockdowns, like almost everyone. You can’t believe they’d mention, “Oh yeah, might just do another in a month or so,” like it doesn’t rip up our lives. Unfortunately, the Sun, the Mirror, and all the tripe like it, preys on that. Every paper does sometimes to a lesser extent, to get clicks. I know it feels awful. I would say, you just have to go forward knowing that if a paper could get the word lockdown inside quotation marks from a government source, you bet they’d print that. If it’s not a complete quotation, it’s because no one said that. And just know the Sun and Mirror ARE worse than most at quoting tiny bits of sentences together. It’s up to you if you want to ask to delete the thread, but I would ask for the title to be changed, at least.

vera99 · 16/07/2021 07:58

I assume she knows what she is talking about publically - she is obviously alarmed.

Reading the comments on Exit Wave - first I'd heard of that term - I don't usually read the covid threads - and I thought that was very interesting

MyGardenSanctuary · 16/07/2021 08:03

Stupid irresponsible thread title. Hmm

I am not denying @vera99 her expertise I am just saying that the report (linked) and the pages she highlights are for September to now. What we need is some proper data coming out as to whether vaccines have an impact on that or not

Although she does follow up with all the majority of the patients she has are currently unvaccinated. We need to get the vaccine numbers are

It is an interesting and sobering thread though. And should be read by any adult still vaccine hesitant

QueenStromba · 16/07/2021 08:05

@GiantToadstool

From googling the reports I think he's concerned. And theres an interesting discussion to be had there...

But thats not the same as lockdown.

I don't know what he's playing at. There's just no way he was believing what he was saying at the briefing the other day, the argument just had so many gaping holes in it plus his manner suggested someone had a literal or figurative gun to his head. Then three days later he's giving talks indicating that he doesn't really think this is the best course of action. Why stand up there on Monday supporting the end of restrictions then basically recant on Thursday?
IsobelEd · 16/07/2021 08:07

I guess the upside is that we should be through with COVID next year, however painful it ends up being

We were naive, but may I remind you we never dreamed we'd be looking at a second winter of Covid!

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 16/07/2021 08:09
@PicsInRed Why is it just football?! What about Wimbledon and Ascot… or does it not infect richer people?
I'm not that poster, but there is no chanting at Wimbledon and crowds are hushed rapidly. Roaring support happens at Ascot - but not for as long as at the football.

There's less gathering in pubs to watch either racing ir tennis - it's not just the crowds at the main event - it's the number of other parties and nature of mixing at them that really adds to the numbers
