I'm also preparing myself for our UK holiday not to go ahead near the beginning of the school holidays. With massively rising cases in our area, grandchildren at school and daughter half vaccinated and working in retail, I'm not confident that we can avoid self isolation.

There has been the first case of CV amongst our close circle and one grandson had his primary school class bubble burst a couple of weeks ago. I feel like it's on a knife edge.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 11/07/2021 15:25

@foxandbee

I agree knittingaddict. It is the same old story with Johnson. He promises people what he thinks they want to hear (cf the handlong of Christmas) and then backtracks when it become evident that it is not a good idea..

I do trust the government here in Wales though. Drakeford has made mistakes, but generally he has been a steady hand and unafraid to make unpopular decisions.

Agree that Drakeford has been much better than Johnson. Maybe I should move to Wales.

Johnson's that personality that will promise anything to make people think he's great, and doesn't quite seem to realise that after he's promised and not delivered a few times people are wise to it.

But then again, given how many people seem to think the 19th is 'irreversible' maybe not....

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 11/07/2021 17:07

And now...........maybe another varient!! shit.

, myself and others have warned that allowing high transmission poses huge risks for variant adaptation."

NannyAndJohn · 11/07/2021 17:14

Prof. Pagel raised the alarm on this a couple of weeks ago.

She was denounced as a "doom monger".

Horehound · 11/07/2021 17:58

There are always going to be new variant. The flu has variants, the cold virus has variants.
Why is this a surprise to anyone??

SonnetForSpring · 11/07/2021 17:59

Why don't you still understand the significance of variants. We have no hope if this is the level of understanding
Tealightsandd · 11/07/2021 18:01

It's not the flu. Nor is it a cold. And it's not the same as either. It's a new virus - one that was possibly modified in a lab.

There's only new variants because it was allowed to spread freely uncontained.

SonnetForSpring · 11/07/2021 18:02

When people like my husband say they don't trust the government then you know you're in trouble

I agree wholeheartedly with him

Fucking hell. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Horehound · 11/07/2021 18:19

Oh yes a "fucking hell" from a covid loon 🤣🤣🤣

Horehound · 11/07/2021 18:21

This is the problem with these covid thread. You think screaming like a banshee about numbers and variants is actually going to change anything

It won't. You posting on Mumsnet "why don't you understand the seriousness?" Because I do, I'm rational and I'm not in a tizz about it.

Delatron · 11/07/2021 18:54

Ignore them @Horehound they’re over all the other threads posting their crap.

Of course the scientists always expected new variants. Viruses mutate. That’s what they do.

Those that are surprised at this are the ones making absolute fools of themselves with their ‘oh god a new variant!’

Good luck in a few weeks doom mongers! When it’s basically a massive free for all. Hysteria is rising on these boards you can tell....no coincidence we are about to drop all restrictions..

Horehound · 11/07/2021 18:58

Oh yes, I know they are @delatron! I think it must be all consuming on their lives which is quite sad really. Thankfully, I think the majority of people know variants will always be a thing, as you say...that is what they do! All of what is happening now is to be expected really 🤷

lightand · 11/07/2021 19:01

If people have not understood this after 15 months, they will always yell "surprise"! Grin They are going to be "surprised" for the rest of their lives.
frumpety · 11/07/2021 22:44

As long as the vaccines work on the new variant, which they probably will to varying degrees, it won't be a massive step backwards. It's more the combination of a new variant plus the impending 'freedom' day that's concerning.

Backofbeyond50 · 11/07/2021 23:02

We can only hope they do work on new variants.

unwuthering · 12/07/2021 06:19

Meanwhile...

As a senior colleague put it to me: “Are they fucking mad?” To which I could only stare at the floor, feeling desperate. For this is where we are. The UK population, whether we like it or not, is now Boris Johnson’s personal petri dish. Yet before we even reach the projected 100,000 new cases of Covid a day, the NHS – as both Johnson and Javid must know – is already on its knees. The question of whether the workforce will be able to cope is entirely academic. Demand is already unmanageable, staff are already sounding the alarm in droves and patient safety is already being compromised in hospitals up and down the country.

It feels like early March 2020 all over again.

The warning signs are all there but our government and Joe Public have their heads in the sand.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 12/07/2021 06:52

@loubylou1010

Honestly I'm past caring! I don't care how many people get it, I know several people that have it at the moment and all if them have symptoms of a mild cold. If you're more vulnerable and can't have the vaccine then I'm sorry it's up to you to keep yourself safe now, I'm not giving up any more of my freedom for other people.
My DS1 has been behind closed doors since March 2020. He's actually become agoraphobic. I haven't seen him in this time, neither have his young siblings. I wonder how many other people are in the same position? And that's acceptable to you?
Arrowheart · 12/07/2021 08:28

You are obsessed by saying people who don't share your views have their heads in the sand. Maybe they are just sat on the beach enjoying life rather than being negative all the time.

This is so stupid. It's not the same as early march because millions of people are vaccinated.

Is there actually something wrong with you that you cannot comprehend that?!

Notsowise · 12/07/2021 08:31

@NannyAndJohn

“ It feels like early March 2020 all over again.

You might have missed this because you spend all your time screening on MN but we have a vaccine now. And it works. We didn’t in March 2020.

I genuinely pity you, to be so consumed and obsessed with Covid and Mumsnet isn’t living. Make the most of the freedoms we have now and stop spending all day every posting on Covid threads.

Whether you post and screech on here makes no difference to the outcome.

@Horehound I can only assume it’s some sort of anxiety and predicting unrealistic negative scenarios makes them feel like they have some sort of control. Or of close, she just loves it all!

I truly hope if she has kids, she isn’t saying the same to them as it would be quite damaging.
