The mask police are out in full force. It saddens me what society has become Sad

I can't wait not to have to wear one, but I'm a bit worried that this time last year things were going well and then we had eat out to help out and look how well that went.

It'll be nice to be able to lip read everyone again and understand what the hell people are saying.

User135644 · 05/07/2021 07:31

I can see this causing a divide. Those who wear a mask publicly mocked (already happens at the London protests) and those who don't still shouted at.

I had thought, genuinely, that the end of the mask mandate would mean the end of all the judgement and vitriol. Ah, how naive I was.

EOTHO was a shitshow but crucially, we didn't have vaccines then.

I've just read that last year, 1 in 60 people who caught covid would die from it. Now it's 1 in 1,000. Still too many deaths but that's how far we've come from last summer and taking into account more transmissible variants. And as more get doubly vaccinated, that number will decrease further.

TheVampiresWife · 05/07/2021 07:39

@Wildewoodz

The saddest part is all this makes the return of measures more likely in autumn,

Don’t blame me!

Have fun cracking on.

We've already been told that some measures are likely to return in autumn/winter as respiratory illness season ramps up.
LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2021 07:44

I will also be ditching mine, hate them. I had to wear one yesterday and felt sick in the heat.

Anyone criticising someone for wearing one is obviously a dick though

NannyAndJohn · 05/07/2021 08:18

We didn't have Delta last year either, @TheVampiresWife.

I'm fully expecting to receive a barrage of abuse for choosing to do the socially responsible thing and keep my mask on.

But frankly, I don't give a shit. I give a shit about the CEV who will be sitting ducks and the shedloads of children who will end up with Long Covid.

No, but we had Alpha from September.

Nobody should be abusing anyone for their mask choice after the 19th. But then, nobody should've been abusing the exempt at any point, but many people were happy to do that.

Including many on this thread.

TheVampiresWife · 05/07/2021 08:29

@NannyAndJohn and I acknowledged Delta when I said that last year, 1 in 60 people who caught covid would die from it. Now it's 1 in 1,000. Still too many deaths but that's how far we've come from last summer and taking into account more transmissible variants.

Stillgoings · 05/07/2021 08:32

I feel worried about it. It seems too soon. It's a weird feeling working in a public place and thinking about the hoards of people who will be coming in without them.

NannyAndJohn · 05/07/2021 08:34

Cases are just as important as deaths.

Arguably more important, as cases > hospitalisations > deaths.

And Delta, being ~2.56 times more transmissible than Original Covid, has sent us up the creek with regard to cases.

Vaccines have broken the link between cases and serious illness. Yes, any death is one too many. But we cannot stop every death. It's unachievable.

The link is still there.

We just have to wait and keep our fingers crossed that it has been weakened.

TheVampiresWife · 05/07/2021 08:38

And as I said (twice already), last year 1 in 60 inflected died from Covid. Now it's 1 in 1,000, even taking Delta into consideration. And that number will decrease further as more are fully vaccinated and therapeutics continue to improve.

Out of interest, how long would you like restrictions to be in place for, @NannyAndJohn?

There's no 'keeping our fingers crossed'. It's happened already. Demonstrably so.
NannyAndJohn · 05/07/2021 08:40

Masks and SD should be in place until we have the 87% fully vaccinated for herd immunity. We're only just over half way there.

And we should have put the kibosh on things like indoor mixing as soon as cases began to rise again.

NannyAndJohn · 05/07/2021 08:42

Given that hospitalisations on the graph you just posted are starting to creep up, I'm not counting my chickens.

Would you be happy to keep paying furlough to staff affected by continuing closures? Indefinitely?

Over 80% have had one vaccination, which provides up to 94% protection against hospitalisation. In two weeks' time that number will be higher still.

NannyAndJohn · 05/07/2021 08:46

Of course. We're all in it together.

80% of adults. Children are people too, you know.

Correct. And I believe they should be vaccinated where appropriate. Not suggesting otherwise.

I wonder if it'll be as much as the mask exempt have had over the past year?

Nobody should be abusing anyone but as I've said, lots of people on MN who were happy to be utterly vile to those who can't wear masks are now terribly concerned that they'll be on the receiving end now.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 05/07/2021 08:55

I'll probably still wear in high flow areas such as public transport. Less likely to wear one on say a rollercoaster outside. People get wound up both sides of the debate as with covid, it highlights how much our actions/inactions affect others. So...masks in crowded indoor spaces offer some protection to others, but that protection comes at a price of wearing a mask which many don't want to or can't do and excludes others who have difficulty hearing etc. So...saying no masks affects others by reducing amount of places some can go, helps increase spread etc. Both sides are affected.

QwertyGirly · 05/07/2021 08:56

@TheVampiresWife I'm not terribly concerned. It's just an observation. I think I'll keep on wearing a mask just to annoy them.

Your choice. As I say, nobody should be abusing anybody (or trying to annoy anyone). It's all so childish.
