This is from the Norway paper: "Given the low prevalence of COVID-19 currently

That’s a fairly key point in the bit you quoted, and clearly not applicable to the UK at the moment, so…

I wear my mask outside in the school playground because the council and school have asked us to and it's an easy thing to do so why wouldn't I? Other than that I don't wear them outside.

I will continue wearing them indoors in shops, public transport etc past 19th July as I think the growing case numbers are concerning, particularly in relation to variants.

I do use disposable masks as tried a whole load of fabric ones and felt suffocated but I can comfortably wear the disposables for as long as needed. The idea that people are carrying around manky bits of fabric that they're putting against their nose and mouth is disgusting, why wouldn't you clean them daily? It's hardly hard work to just throw them in the washing machine.

I make sure to cut the elastics before disposing of them and appreciate that they have a negative impact on the environment which im not happy about, but I can only do what i can do.

You can probably extrapolate from that to apply to our current situation, although I'm not a statistician so I won't attempt it. Either way, the two large studies show that the evidence base for mask-wearing is not at all robust, certainly not enough to justify the widespread mandates. I could accept it more if we were wearing proper ppe and wearing it properly - at least that would make sense and the study suggests it could have a small effect. But the 'bit of cloth over face, back in pocket' system we've got going on. Nope. In fact, I suspect it has done more harm than good.
Flaxmeadow · 04/07/2021 21:43

Clearly a lot of people forget it’s actually really important to catch illnesses, it’s how our immune system works.

With this virus. It's more important to protect our services from being completely overwhelmed in a short space of time

I remember reading about dog ownership being good for your immune system as they bought you into contact with lots of viruses etc.

Domesticated dogs are not a natural product of evolution and are bad for human health. They are really filthy animals, with many dirty habits. They carry multiple diseases and parasites, at worse some can kill humans and they do in the thousands everyday worldwide by rabies, a really horrific death..

There was a news story recently (America) about the spread of a dog parasite that is now found to be causing tumours and cancers in humans.

No they are not good for anyones system at all, no matter how sentimental people are about their cute fur babies

Wr really need to stay away from animals and leave them in as natural environment as possible. This virus crossed over from too much contact with animals, as have many others. That's what the film Contagion was a warning about

Postdatedpandemic · 04/07/2021 21:59

@ThunderBitch The Danmask study was designed to evaluate only the protective effect to mask wearers and not source control. It was also designed so that a 50% reduction in infections would have to be achieved to show statistical significance.
It is not well respected.

Widespread mask wearing is to stop spread from potentially infected people. Nothing to do with PPE everything to do with CPE Community Protection Equipment.

LilyPond2 · 04/07/2021 22:12

@ThunderBitch The study you have linked to indicates that wearing a surgical mask has little (though not necessarily nil) impact on the wearer's risk of contracting Covid in the circumstances covered by the study (people out and about generally for at least three hours). The study does not look at how wearing a mask impacts the risk of others catching Covid if the mask wearer has Covid. So it certainly doesn't prove that masks are useless in reducing the spread of Covid!

Domesticated dogs are not a natural product of evolution and are bad for human health.

Later on in human evolution dogs evolved in conjunction with humans and formed a symbiotic relationship, eating the scraps left behind and preventing disease.

merrymelody · 04/07/2021 22:27

Wear a mask, don't wear a mask. It's a choice.

Postdatedpandemic · 04/07/2021 22:29

@merrymelody

Wear a mask, don't wear a mask. It's a choice.
Is it a choice that should be informed by peer reviewed science or just by the whim of someone on social media?
Flaxmeadow · 04/07/2021 22:44

Later on in human evolution dogs evolved in conjunction with humans and formed a symbiotic relationship,

No they evolved, though thats probably not the right word, unnaturally. They were inbred to perform tasks

eating the scraps left behind and preventing disease

Cave man wouldn't have left any scraps. Everything was used
One theory is that they followed humans in order to eat human excrement and that this is how the relationship began. Domesticated dogs still eat excrement. They are also totally obsessed with food, a feature that was purposefully and unnaturally bred into them as a form of control, they will eat until they vomit and them eat the vomit, its cruel really.

Thousands of years of selective breeding has caused so many of the malformations we see in them now. Some dogs cannot even breathe without surgery, others have mental disorders, some are deaf, some have legs and "back ends" that cannot support them even when they are not aged, and so on

Tealightsandd · 04/07/2021 23:03

@merrymelody

Wear a mask, don't wear a mask. It's a choice.
Then the same freedom of choice should be given to smokers. The government wants people to have personal choice about wearing a mask indoors, eg on a train? Then smokers should have that same personal choice to smoke indoors, eg. on a train.
TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 23:09

@Tealightsandd you really, really need to drop this ridiculous comparison. Many posters have already pointed out the reasons why there's no equivalence whatsoever.

Tealightsandd · 04/07/2021 23:18

Well no I don't. And no, other posters haven't managed to explain why no masks in a pandemic is different from smoking indoors.

I admit it's not exactly the same. Covid damages the economy. Smoking aids it.

MurdockTheMouse · 04/07/2021 23:30

@Tealightsandd
Well like it or not come the 19th July people are very likely going to be told masks are a personal choice. So 🤷‍♀️ Either adapt or go with it I suppose.

Tealightsandd · 04/07/2021 23:38

Equally like it or not, people myself included will point out the hypocrisy and double standards in giving personal choice to one group but not another. 🤷‍♀️😷🚬

Great you craic on with that. Doesn’t change the material reality of what’s happening come the 19th.

Well, you have fun with that. It's not going to change anything.

As long as you don't vilify people for not wanting/being unable to wear a mask when they're no longer mandatory, you just do what you've gotta do.

MercyBooth · 05/07/2021 01:22

Wildewoodz · 05/07/2021 01:35

Imagine if people had this attitude about wearing a condom after the AIDS virus. Turned out it protected us all in many ways. Much like masks (pollution,other diseases)

A mask isn’t that hard.
I say this as a severe asthmatic with 50% lung capacity and anxiety.

I get it for those exempt or those who genuinely struggle but those just whinging about THEIR freedoms while mocking those who exercise their freedom to wear a mask are irksome.

Our masks protect others more than ourselves. It’s collective responsibility in a society.

Mocking people who wear masks ie not supporting freedom.

Wildewoodz · 05/07/2021 01:39

The saddest part is all this makes the return of measures more likely in autumn,

Don’t blame me!

Have fun cracking on.

Hppymum123 · 05/07/2021 06:14

@TheVampiresWife

Pretty sure they will vilify the wrong person sooner rather than later and that will be karma 😉

RocheLobe · 05/07/2021 06:17

“ A mask isn’t that hard.

How do you know what other people’s circumstances are that might make it harder than for you? It’s not just health conditions. Stop saying “it’s not that hard”. Start saying “I know it can be hard and I’m grateful that people continue to make the effort despite it”. Denying that it’s hard for some people doesn’t help at all.

Chillychangchoo · 05/07/2021 06:33

@RocheLobe

I know. Like her own suffering is the barometer for literally everybody else.

I’m sick of wearing masks with my glasses, particularly in hot weather. It’s uncomfortable. Is it the end of the world? No. but I’m looking forward to feeling less suffocated.
