Not sure why I'm using AIBU because I've already made up my mind that i'm not, but interested to hear the thoughts of others...my friend is an air stewardess and says she flys to India regularly in an empty plane but comes back with the plane full! I was surprised as I wrongly assumed that with all systems go prepared for the 21st, travel to the UK from India would be banned unless you are returning home to quarantine or had an emergency family/business issue to attend to. WTF is flying in from a scientifically proven covid varient hot spot still allowed when we're preparing to free ourselves from bondage? Also how come the USA is never on the red list (of course we all know why, I'm just being sarcastic). Rant over!!!
@FaceAcher you sound like a racist. Where did I say I wanted to keep foreigners out??? How do you know if I am a foreigner?? Does India and the USA cover all foreigners? You don't have to agree with me but do not make stuff up that I have not said. I did not say I was an expert and I already said that I don't watch the news regularly because it's too depressing. My friend is not a racist, the conversation just didn't go that deep and as some have said she could have assumed that I already knew. I suppose you think anyone on here who agrees with me is a raving racist?? I genuinely didn't know that people coming in from India had to quarantine but I do know now. Before anyone says it yes, it's totally possible for me not to know as i avoid constantly watching the newsHmm
No one needs to constantly watch the news to be aware of the roadmap and travel rules, how do you know what you can and can't do if you are ignorant of what's going on in the country?

How do you expect anyone to take your views seriously when you are so ill informed?

@NameyNameyNameChangey

*If the borders had been closed in Feb 2020:
 1. There would have been a major breach of an international treaty on the island of Ireland
 2. Thousands of British citizens would still be stranded abroad unable to return - there are approximately 36000 Australians trying to get home
 3. We would have had to restrict lorries bringing in food & other goods which would have had a significant adverse impact*

Agree- especially with point 3. We are not self sufficient, we need to have international trade just to maintain a food supply.
I thought Australia was allowing their citizens to return, if they isolated?

If we are not self sufficient I would demand the government comes up with a plan for reducing the population and make us self sufficient. We should have shut the borders well before we had community transmission. Too many woke people crying racism whenever border closures are mentioned.

This!!!

Surely it’s obvious what was meant!

MrsFezziwig · 04/06/2021 22:08

The thing is, OP, although anyone is entitled to post whatever they like on here, personally I like to do a bit of research before posting. If I take as gospel everything “my friend said” and that friend is a bit of a dimwit, then I’m just going to look foolish.

TiberiusNero · 04/06/2021 22:08

@MaybeCrazy2

People who point out grammar are dicks. Not everyone was in a private education- shame manners wasn’t taught to any of you.
I had the most basic education it’s possible for someone in the UK to have and left school at 16, but I can still spell, use grammar and punctuate.

Basic literacy and being able to communicate effectively in writing are not the sole preserve of the privately educated.

Here’s a simple write-up of the rules. I’m not a fan of the traffic light system at all, it’s stupid, but it should reassure you that people aren’t being allowed to swan in and out as they please. Even people arriving from green list countries (and only one of those will let British people in) have to take a test before arrival and after they return.

What are the rules for travelling to green, amber and red list countries? www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-52544307

This thread reminds me a bit of UKIP’s ‘Breaking Point’ poster.

ilovesouthlondon · 04/06/2021 22:14

@BelleBlueBell well you took my views seriously enough to waste time that you'll never get back responding lool. You're right, you don't have to watch the news every day just like you didn't have to respond to this post. Not everyone has your attitude. I've no idea why this has been turned Into a "race" issue for some and a you "should know" for others and a "your friend" for the rest. I've explained that I didn't know if dont want to believe that then it's fine with me. Now I know its actually helped me feel less anxious about the situation. Mumsnet is for sharing information and opinions (you always get a holes). I've replied to as many people as I can and have explained where I was coming from. Thanks to everyone who politely educated me about the current quarantine rules for India, you've helped me more than you could knowSmile. Again I would say this about any country with a higher risk this is NOT about race.

Gosh. Do tell us more about this plan. Actually, don’t.

Ironically, I think one of the most effective ways to reduce the population would have been to let Covid run riot.

woodhill · 04/06/2021 22:18

@StoneofDestiny

But India’s on the red list. You do have to quarantine when arriving in the UK from India. In a quarantine hotel. At a cost of £1,750 a person I think

I know people who flew to India with a special visa to get married - then are returning via another country to avoid quarantine costs.
Ridiculous they were allowed to travel - and ridiculous they (and others) can by pass quarantine so easily..

Yes, I believe that some travellers would fly to a European airport to avoid paying out for quarantine e.g. Paris

I get your point but I dont feel foolish at all. I feel better now than before I wrote the post. We didn't get that deep into the conversation my friend is no dim wit. I took the small part that she said, focused on her safety then ran with it as it really worried me, crucially (as you've pointed out) without checking the rules. I find it so depressing, googling covid rules is like a rabbit hole for me.

Sometimeswinning · 04/06/2021 22:23

Boarders (bet the spelling police love this!!) Should be closed. The 'Kent' varient came/spread because of this. Anybody choosing to travel at this time made their choice for them, not anyone else. Idiots defending it.

saraclara · 04/06/2021 22:25

That will only work if they spend at least two weeks in the other country. Their stay in India will be digitally recorded and evident when they hand over their passport in arrival in the UK. So if they have been in India within the longest possible incubation period of the vaccine, they will still be taken to the quarantine hotel and billed for it.

The downside of their plan if they stay in another European country for a fortnight, will obviously be suffered by that country, whose people they might infect. Not the UK.

Oh, I see I’ve been deleted. I do apologise for using the word ‘thicko’ when you’ve subsequently told everyone that you’re dyslexic instead.

What I should have said was that I think you didn’t think this through before posting. And you really haven’t, have you.

It's a pitty they deleted your attempted insult (I didn't see it) as it shows you in such a good light.Wink. No idea why you're so angry but I do know that how people feel about themselves inside often comes out. I hope next week is better for you.

wherewildflowersgrow · 04/06/2021 22:31

It doesn't matter now. Way more than a million have passed through airports since the Indian variant was discovered - they were always going to close it "soon". It's seeded everywhere now.

Fucking idiots.

Totallyrandomname · 04/06/2021 22:33

I find it odd that so many people delight in pointing out spelling errors and grammatical errors.

I mean if you think someone has made a ridiculous or pointless post then surely a response to the content of their post is enough. Seems cruel and a little arrogant to belittle someone because of their spelling.

Do you recognise at all that the way you posted your OP has caused the reaction to it?

My immediate thought (as was that a lot of other posters) upon reading it was ‘FFS, another fucking Daily Mail reading idiot who hasn’t bothered to do any research but has just posted based on what her mate told her.

Genuine question, I use ‘knob’ for ‘door knob’, but ‘nob’ for name calling penis nob. Is this wrong??!!!
