Not sure why I'm using AIBU because I've already made up my mind that i'm not, but interested to hear the thoughts of others...my friend is an air stewardess and says she flys to India regularly in an empty plane but comes back with the plane full! I was surprised as I wrongly assumed that with all systems go prepared for the 21st, travel to the UK from India would be banned unless you are returning home to quarantine or had an emergency family/business issue to attend to. WTF is flying in from a scientifically proven covid varient hot spot still allowed when we're preparing to free ourselves from bondage? Also how come the USA is never on the red list (of course we all know why, I'm just being sarcastic). Rant over!!!

@GoldenOmber

I'm surprised so many people In the comments section aren't considering this

But what do you want people to consider? Anyone coming from India is going straight to hotel quarantine, at their own expense. What is it you think everyone else is being lax about here?

This is the bit I didn't know but I know now!

if I knew that and could work that out I would not have written the post as it would be pointless...I do know now and am going to ask why she didn't mention this

Your friend is stirring the pot, and you're helping her do so. Is she racist at all? Because if she isn't, why on earth would she let you have the impression that all those passengers would be let loose to infect everyone on arrival?

chergar · 04/06/2021 21:37

I agree with the OP the traffic light system is nonsense, every traveller in to the country should have to quarantine in a hotel direct from point of entry.

This Portugal fiasco highlights how ridiculous it is, people are rescheduling flights to beat the quarantine deadline, how many people will come through between the announcement and then? Once announced it should be immediate.

ilovesouthlondon · 04/06/2021 21:38

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle

Yes - we need to close the borders now to stop EXPORTING the Indian virus (now endemic) to other countries which don’t yet have it)
I agree with this too and have decided on no holidays this year despite the traffic light system.

This.

@MaybeCrazy2

People who point out grammar are dicks. Not everyone was in a private education- shame manners wasn’t taught to any of you.
You don't need a private education to know how to spell basic words relating to something that OP is claiming to be knowledgeable of. If OP weren't insinuating that she's informed on the topic then it wouldn't matter if she couldn't spell but anyone who knows shit all about Covid, transmission, immigration, travel or the regulations can spell "variant" and "border" - so OP is clearly not informed (as if that weren't obvious from the rest of what she's said).
LordOfTheOnionRings · 04/06/2021 21:41

I'm not helping her to do anything and no, she's not a racist otherwise she wouldn't like herself much...you are trying to stir the pot as I'm not sure why some of you have jumped on race especially as it's clear to most people why I singled out india...did you not see me mention the USA as well? I agree that she should have mentioned the hotel quarantine but she was literally just talking about the flights leaving empty then coming back full. The rest of the conversation on that subject was me asking her if she felt comfortable working and she said that she did.

Any non citizens would be not allowed in from Indian, anyway. And I find it hard to believe that several planes full of Indian-British citizens are arriving daily. Even if they are, passengers from red list countries are mandated to isolate in a hotel.
It's already spreading here. It's too late- closing the border will do nothing when there is community spread anyway.

PortMerrionCentre · 04/06/2021 21:43

@NannyAndJohn

If Johnson had "followed the science" and closed the borders back in Feb 2020 we'd have been free of restrictions for months now.

Instead we've over 150,000 dead and about to head into another lockdown.

If the borders had been closed in Feb 2020:
  1. There would have been a major breach of an international treaty on the island of Ireland
  2. Thousands of British citizens would still be stranded abroad unable to return - there are approximately 36000 Australians trying to get home
  3. We would have had to restrict lorries bringing in food & other goods which would have had a significant adverse impact

Agree. Although I doubt many places are going to allow us to enter by a few weeks time anyway.
MintyMabel · 04/06/2021 21:46

I wasn't aware of this. Actually makes me feel much better.

I would have thought your “friend” would have known this. And that you have to show proof of a negative test before you fly.

Agree- especially with point 3. We are not self sufficient, we need to have international trade just to maintain a food supply.
I thought Australia was allowing their citizens to return, if they isolated?

@NurseryFlirt qote the section where I claimed to be an expert? Perhaps you shouldn't be such a nob. You don't need to be an expert to comment about anything on here all you need is an opinion and a topic. I've actually learned more about quarantine on here than I knew before which I'm happy about as it's made me feel less anxious.

Hmm

I went to a sink comprehensive in Essex and they taught me grammar. They teach grammar at all schools in the UK, not just the private ones.

Good manners should be learned from your parents. Or not, as is often the case.

All of which could still have been allowed with a border closed to the rest of the folk who could still travel.

You don’t have to have been to a private school to learn spelling, state schools teach it as well. Just for your information, it’s ‘weren’t’ not ‘wasn’t’. We’re not dicks; we’re less likely to be taken in by scams if we can recognise the poor grammar and spelling many of them use.
ilovesouthlondon · 04/06/2021 21:56

@FaceAcher you sound like a racist. Where did I say I wanted to keep foreigners out??? How do you know if I am a foreigner?? Does India and the USA cover all foreigners? You don't have to agree with me but do not make stuff up that I have not said. I did not say I was an expert and I already said that I don't watch the news regularly because it's too depressing. My friend is not a racist, the conversation just didn't go that deep and as some have said she could have assumed that I already knew. I suppose you think anyone on here who agrees with me is a raving racist?? I genuinely didn't know that people coming in from India had to quarantine but I do know now. Before anyone says it yes, it's totally possible for me not to know as i avoid constantly watching the newsHmm

She didn't say it was daily flights...nationality does not bother me (sigh) this was all about risk but I can see I've really got nothing to worry about as everyone coming from that area (this is about the covid variant not race) has to quarantine. Smile

Can you please address why you think the US should be on the red list?
