I can’t bear the thought of another full lockdown but it seems inevitable

I’ve only just this week been allowed to see sister without social distancing, as she lives in residential care, had a lovely meal and a big hug but at the end all I could think was, will it be another year before we can meet again? She’s been hugely, horribly affected by this virus - she’s dreadfully ill through anxiety - and has been only just told this week she can see two relatives and one friend, and she might be allowed back to day care services the end of this month - first time since Feb 2020 .

I can’t bear the thought of another year indoors, no haircuts, no socialising, no shopping, no travel, no seeing sister or friends or family ...

I live in a tiny village with shit public transport that was largely stoped over both lockdowns ... can’t bear another year in this three mile square and relying on online delivery and zoom ... GP rang this morning and even yapping to her I thought, how lovely it would be to see someone else face to face - most friends and family are still heavily avoiding all socialising, this is my experience of most people now that there’s a lot of fear and anxiety around covid .

I realise restrictions are necessary and probably inevitable, and things could be so so much worse - but I’m struggling so much now . Finding I’m dreading getting out of bed as I keep thinking, what’s coming next?

With the threat of fines or imprisonment, they would work to an extent, as long as the police enforce them

You can’t really enforce what people do in their own homes. Not in the UK. Not without serious political consequences. They know this.

@NannyAndJohn

Yep, it's coming.

Cases doubling every four days means we'll hit 100,000 a day by the 21st June.

Best we all accept that we'll be spending the rest of the year in lockdown instead of sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that everything's okay.

So on that reckoning these are the expected cases over the coming dates

today - 5765
9th June - 11530
13th june - 23060
17th june = 46120
21st june = 92240
25th june = 184480
29th june = 368960

I sincerely hope thats not the case because although people are saying only hospitilisations are deaths matter, what about absence days from work/school for all those cases, and even if 3 percent of them need hospitilisation the higher the number of cases the higher the amount needed medical help is.

How did you calculate its doubling every 4 days please

Sounds like the majority of people don't want all restrictions to go on the 21st - a poll suggests 65% fear the scrapping of social distancing and masks: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/covid-restrictions-june-social-distancing-b1859945.html

It's a good point. I know I'm much more likely to go into shops and use public transport if others are wearing masks and keeping their distance. My second vaccination is not due until late July and I don't want to take unnecessary risks before then - no point catching covid now when I'll be much safer so soon. So actually businesses will get more of my money if social distancing remains in place for a few more weeks. If not, then I'll just avoid shops, cafes etc.

Thats a really good point, I mean for the sake of wearing a mask and a bit of space for your peace of mind, I agree they should delay that for a while
MaxNormal · 05/06/2021 23:49

nordica if you'd run that same poll in the Telegraph or Mail it would be a totally different result.

maybe we need 2 options, shops that are socially distanced and require masks and those that have relaxed restrictions. To be honest the only place that I would really wish to have masks still mandatory is on the bus. The other day I was on one with my adult DD and this woman (who was wearing a mask) got on and stared at me hard as she coughed non stop into her mask. My DD laughed quiely as only 5 minutes earlier at the bus stop I had a coughing fit (not covid but swallowed something and it went down the wrong way) ...My DD said to me, you cant cough on the bus mum or you will annoy people, so when we got on, luckily I had calmed my coughing down, and this woman then got on and was coughing in her mask whilst intently staring at me (which was the bit that tickled my DD) = If however she wasnt wearing a mask it wouldnt have made me feel comfortable in such a confined area (i have had both vaccinations but my DD hasnt had either)

Where you been this last 18 months it’s not worked throughout and even less so now .

I've come back to this and already the number of cases is way adrift from the prediction. Does anyone still believe that it is going to be 100k a day in 11 days time?
PrincessNutNuts · 10/06/2021 16:59

I assumed it was a typo for "a week" because we will definitely be there in the next fortnight.

PrincessNutNuts · 10/06/2021 17:02

100,000 cases a day by mid-July if it keeps going at this rate.

DudeIsADude · 10/06/2021 17:02

Meh whatever happens there is literally no way, law or not, that I would not see my family again like last year. Not a chance in hell.

Ok had a quick check in on this thread for my daily dose of madness!

dementedma · 10/06/2021 17:10

Doesn't feel like we've ever been out of lockdown in Scotland. Still forced to work from home despite the impact on physical and mental health. I cant continue to do it.

winched · 10/06/2021 17:14

Well last week it was 21st of June so that's excellent.

No doubt by Sunday it'll be mid-September. Next week mid-November. THEN and only then I might be inclined to get slightly less than apathetic considering hospitals always struggle in winter so why aren't we just letting cases rise (and with it immunity + wellbeing) in the summer when hospitals can cope?

Either the vaccines work - in which case great nothing to worry about.

Or they don't work - in which case, let cases rise in summer and if we MUST have restrictions, then it should be in the winter after people have had a summer of freedom.

Or do you suggest lockdown forever based on these highly accurate predictions?

It is madness. Here we go again.

About 14,0000 -15,000 cases a day expected by "Freedom Day" and then if it continues at this rate, doubling every 8 or 9 days, 100,000 cases a day by mid-July. I'm supposed to be going to a wedding on the 18th of July.

It usually gathers pace as it spreads though. We had let it spread for so long we'd built up to a 3 day doubling rate when we locked down the first time.

I don't know where the previous poster got the 4 day doubling rate from.

There's a good chance we'll get to that speed soon, but as far as I can see we're not there yet.

But of course the more cases we allow the faster we get there.

newnortherner111 · 10/06/2021 17:31

We never had a full lockdown at all, and little enforcement of the restrictions that were there. Not that I want to continue with the current restrictions for ever.

@Wtfdoipick no I don't believe it will be 100k by the end of the month.

MercyBooth · 10/06/2021 18:49

@winched Christmas is my favourite time of year. I hate summer I hate the heat. I wont be complying with Christmas lockdown 2.0

Pinkylemons · 10/06/2021 19:16

Unless the NHS becomes overwhelmed there will not be another full lockdown. That’s not happening.

PrincessNutNuts · 10/06/2021 19:21

Our government doesn't do anything to stop the NHS from being overwhelmed though does it?

It minimises and plays it all down, lets the NHS get to the verge of being overwhelmed and then calls a lockdown.

winched · 10/06/2021 19:39

@MercyBooth me neither 😂 but there is even less than 0 chance of my compliance if they call for restrictions now. That goes for everyone I know irl too.

tootyfruitypickle · 10/06/2021 21:31

I won't comply either and I was one of the people calling for lockdown in early March 2020. We have vaccines , that's all we can do. We need to crack on as normal now. I feel if I won't comply then that's probably 90pc of the population who won't and the government will know that so they won't impose another lockdown

Cowbells · 11/06/2021 08:28

We didn't. But I know people in countries who did and it hasn't made a discernible difference.

They make it up. Post it on threads like this. Cheerleaders of Doom jump on the thread and agree and say "well said". When it becomes clear that their predictions are wildly inaccurate, they say "well I actually didn't mean doubling every 4 days, what I meant was this".

When they're proven even more wrong they name change (although are very easy to spot as the posting style is the same) and start all over again.
