Yet more chat about novavax, (un)blinding, general vaccine passport stress, approval (please please please) and more.
Those involved in other vaccine trials also welcome.

We're going to have an unblinding party in November!

JPLeeds · 27/05/2021 15:40

I've just had my 6 month appointment in Leeds and got answers to a few questions.

  1. They advised the trial should not effect travel insurance and if anyone had any issues they should contact their trial team. He said that if someone was actively talking a trial medicine it would be different.
  1. They were not sure if 12 month appointments will go ahead as by that time it may be unethical and they will have enough information by then.
  1. There may be a booster trial in October but it is not certain. Apparently they were testing a vaccine with two strains and it didn't go as planned for whatever reason.
  1. Leeds is participating in Cov-boost but we obviously can't take part due to not having AZ/Pfizer to start off with.
  1. I discussed booking myself for a different vaccine if Cov-boost trial is shown to be effective/safe (if no Novavax booster available) He didn't see an issue with that but will have and see. I've seen people posting in the U.S.A that they had multiple vaccines.

J&J one shot vaccine has been approved by UK, come on Novavax! I am starting to regret taking part in this trial tbh

JPLeeds · 28/05/2021 21:09

I'm really tempted to book myself in for another vaccine as we don't know how long the protection lasts and already been 6 months now.

Will prob just be used for boosters. Not used in under 40s in Ireland.

Quick Q. Why is a 12 month appt unethical? That's when we should get unblinded.
JPLeeds · 29/05/2021 22:31

The nurse just thought it may be unethical but gave no reason and I could not even be provisionally booked in for 12 month check. I guess by then the vaccine may have been fully authorised so they may decide to unblind earlier. They said the blood tests were only being used to see if we had been infected with Covid and did not check for antibodies from the vaccine. When I phoned up querying the appointment they did say that they could do it on the phone and leave the blood test. I have suspicions that in Leeds at least they are hoping just to move on to Cov-boost trial and stop the Novavax one.

BG2015 · 30/05/2021 05:58

I'm in Staffordshire and attend the Cheadle clinic.

Ive got my final appointment booked for the first week in November.

JPLeeds · 30/05/2021 11:04

Oh well maybe I was given the wrong information. They spoke to two of us at the same time and the other person was not very happy.

JPLeeds · 30/05/2021 11:06

The only thing I could think is that both of us had been unblinded already.

Dreamer1989 · 30/05/2021 16:38

I know I should contact my trial site - but I just feel very left out and stranded re info about any booster and being registered on the app. Anyone else feel adrift? Noone seems to know anything- I am increasingly worried that Novavax wont be accepted by MHRA

I’m feeling the same as you. Communication from my trial site team has been woefully poor from the start. I find it odd that there is so much difference between the site teams, particularly from what I’ve read on this board. I know that I had Novavax in October/November last year. I’ve now booked myself NHS vaccinations for the middle of June, after the 7 June deadline that the NIHR has given for further information on transferring trial data to the NHS database and in time for me to have had my second vaccination by the time we go on holiday (in England) in late August, in case vaccination passports are a thing. It will also be around 8 months since my first vaccination, thus tying in with the Government’s current proposals for timings for booster vaccinations.
BG2015 · 31/05/2021 17:11

Wow, so you're going to a second batch of vaccines?

I can't say I blame you and am sorely tempted

BG2015 · 31/05/2021 18:25

Just talking to my DP about it all and how Novavax have let us down.

He thinks I should go for an NHS vaccine

Dreamer1989 · 31/05/2021 23:05

I do want to voice my frustrations to the trial team - but A) its not their fault and b) am I just shouting into the void!

Some updates on the FAQ section of the NIHR website that attempt to answer the concerns we all have:

The end dates seem to keep getting pushed back!

What am I missing? The 7 June date is unchanged. What has been moved back?

Thanks for this.

It doesn't tell us anything new does it. Govt still trying to add it to the app, IT problems etc.

Someone on Twitter suggests it will be August before it's approved. Don't know how this person knows.

JustMeAndWheatley · 01/06/2021 08:32

A few days ago they were saying it would all be sorted by the 7th of June. Now it seems to be ‘update in the week of the 7th’, ‘in the coming weeks’ blah blah blah.

I don’t doubt that there are many logistical hurdles to get through.

I’m on the Janssen trial. For me the most frustrating/disappointing thing is that there has been literally no information at all from the trial team for weeks.

andadietcoke · 01/06/2021 08:38

Ah I see. I was reassured by the 'no point getting a second vaccination because this will all be resolved within 10 weeks' bit though. I'm still getting another vaccination in mid July if it isn't though. That will be 9 months post dose 1 for me and no qualms at all.
