Well this is fun:

You can click on an area - such as say Bolton - and you can watch B1617.2 arriving in April then spreading out to the surrounding areas.

(It's nothing, nothing, nothing, then it suddenly bursts into colour.

And/or look at your own area and see if it's reached you yet.

I've asked for the post with the wrong pictures to be deleted. Sorry everyone.

Making tea, feeding the cat, and posting on my phone with one thumb and half an eye.

@BlackeyedSusan

I can foresee the future and it tells me...I will be spending hours on this.
I've looked up areas for the WHOLE family. Grin

Interesting. I'm in the SW, a third in my area is now the Indian one just in the last week.

PrincessNutNuts · 18/05/2021 13:52

Here's Bolton with the thick black outline.

10th April

24th April

8th May.

Yeah it's a quick. Doubling regularly in the areas it's found - despite us still being in some restrictions and so many people vaccinated.

The government don't seem to remember that it was low numbers before - until it wasn't.

And it was "just cases" before - until it wasn't.

Mine seems to be 0

In SE London

Pootle40 · 18/05/2021 14:05

@Mif4

🙄 It's cases guys. Deaths are still incredibly low. We can't be living in fear forever. Enough is enough on all this now.

Also does anyone know how the PCR test detects one variant from another?

Precisely. Worrying people need and want to look this up regularly. To what end?
WoolyMammoth55 · 18/05/2021 14:12

Think we have 0 in Mendip for now - is that right?

@PrincessNutNuts, now I've seen this thread and am consumed by the panic of the scientifically-illiterate... What do you think a reasonable person in a 0 area would do to reduce their risk at present? I've had both vaccines and DH has had 1. Kids are healthy but older one still going to nursery, which is jam-packed... I know we can't rely on this failure after failure government for advice so would welcome any you'd care to share. Thank gods for MN as usual! :)

We are reliant on the government to change their policies in order to nip this in the bud.

All any of us can do is protect our own families and communities as best we can.

And maybe write to our MP to ask them why the government haven't stopped this variant from spreading and still aren't stopping it.

It's important to remember that all the other variants of concern are still out there too - The Brazilian, the South African, the Kent.

So all any of us can really do is keep an eye out for rising cases in ours and surrounding areas to help us make decisions, keep our family's contacts as low as we can, social distance, wear our masks, get vaccinated, work from home if we can. All the usuals.

If it wasn't in your area by the 8th of May then it might well be by the end of May.

It hadn't yet been detected in Bolton on the 3rd of April.

It's in so many places now I think it's probably bordering most of us @Orangesandlemons77

These are large areas with small numbers of cases - but we know this is how it began in the areas near Bolton 5 weeks ago.

There's a date slider at the bottom, if you move it to the right it brings us to the present day.

Because it's for all the variants it gives the full history back to last September. Watching B117 spread back then is sobering too. But slower than this.

It runs too quickly for me if I press Play so I put it on pause and slide it back a week or two to have a proper look.

@Ughmaybenot

Ha, no. We don’t even really have any common or garden Covid variants around here 🤷🏼‍♀️
Yeah we had no variants either.

I wonder if being a low case area (5-12/100k up and down over the last 3 weeks) they aren't sequencing? I assume they start to sequence when they see a growth pattern and need to identify what's going on rather than just what we see where there's no cases for 2-4 days and then 2, a few days if 2-5 and then back down again? Whatever the variant we have currently the measures to contain are obviously working.

Shame I have no confidence that it'll continue that way Blush

itsgettingwierd · 18/05/2021 15:58

@Lalliebelle

These sound like types of bikini wax.

itsgettingwierd · 18/05/2021 16:03

Although my area is white on proportion.

An area north of the county has 100% of cases as Indian variant.

That's concerning.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/05/2021 16:15

Just tried for surrounding areas and mine.. Wiltshire and get 0.00 on each

It may still be very low numbers.

But neither Bolton nor Bedford began in Bolton or Bedford.

And a few weeks ago neither place had any Indian Variant detected.

Bedford is doubling every 5 days. Very scary here.

Wiltshire - 46.7%

Highlight the area and move the time period cursor to the right. It should show the most recent results and change the colour.
