Well this is fun:

You can click on an area - such as say Bolton - and you can watch B1617.2 arriving in April then spreading out to the surrounding areas.

(It's nothing, nothing, nothing, then it suddenly bursts into colour.

And/or look at your own area and see if it's reached you yet.

@leiaskye - me too & that map shows Kirklees has no cases of it yet.. 🤷🏼‍♀️

BonnyEm · 18/05/2021 09:25

0% here but it's rising in the areas surrounding us.

JanFebAnyMonth · 18/05/2021 09:32

Anyone who can’t get it to load on their phone: switch to using a tablet or laptop, that worked for me.

Yes, remember that these figures are VERY unlikely be the current total number of cases in any area because:

a) not all people who are infected go for a PCR test (asymptomatic/ other reasons)

b) PCR tests only pick up 70% of infections

c) only about 30% of positive tests go on to be sequenced to detect the variant (genomic testing), unless you’re in a surge area

d) the genomic tests take 5 days to produce results.

NotBot · 18/05/2021 09:33

Oh actually, no, I clicked on it and 1.3% of cases are the mutation.

Hey ho. Better get out & enjoy life before we all lose the plot over variants again.. 🙄 despite 95% of the vulnerable being vaccinated..

Tiktokersmiracle · 18/05/2021 09:35

I'm in Reading. 0%

roses2 · 18/05/2021 09:35

Wow. 1 month ago it was 12% of cases and now it's 41%!

EmpressSuiko · 18/05/2021 09:52

Nothing around me in the south west for any of the variants? Surely that can’t be right!? I’ve played through each one showing when we had quite a few cases but now it says nothing for any of them.

HarrisMcCoo · 18/05/2021 09:56

Nothing for Scotland.

No, maybe they should go back to the zone or tier thing ? I know it didn't work that well last time but it's better than doing nothing in the hot spot areas?

Leonardsgirl · 18/05/2021 10:09

Mif4 I agree. Deaths are low, and cases are very low too. We need to move on.

AfternoonToffee · 18/05/2021 10:10

I'm not really sure what I should do with the information that the Indian variant hasn't yet reached my shores.

knittingaddict · 18/05/2021 10:10

@Mif4

🙄 It's cases guys. Deaths are still incredibly low. We can't be living in fear forever. Enough is enough on all this now.

Also does anyone know how the PCR test detects one variant from another?

I'm not living in fear thanks. Just interested to see how this is developing. My husband had his second jab on Friday and I'm having mine on Thursday, but I still have some vested interest in what is happening out there.
Gingernaut · 18/05/2021 10:17

Indian variant is about 24% at the moment.

There are a lot of Asian families here, with many travelling back and forth to the subcontinent as if it were a routine commute.

Low uptake of vaccine too.

GabsAlot · 18/05/2021 11:01

morning

which number is the kent variant on the list please

Jenasaurus · 18/05/2021 11:07

O cases for me, the ones we have are from the states. B.1.17

Jenasaurus · 18/05/2021 11:11

I read that incorrectly,

33.3% B.1.1.7
33.3% B.1.617
33.3% B.1.617.2

Is the last one the Indian virus, the top one is from the states not sure about the middle one?

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 18/05/2021 11:24

That middle one is the first, master, Indian variant we identified. The last one is the Indian variant of particular concern.

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 18/05/2021 11:35

If I'm reading it right,
B strain - green - initial/original covid in UK/England
B1.177 - pinky - cases originating fron Spanish strains last autumn
B1.1.7 - purple - Kent variant that quickly became dominant through late autumn/winter within six weeks
B1.617.2 - teal blue/green - the Indian variant of concern that causing problems right now.

The proportions of variants changes naturally and that's perfectly normal and expected. The reason scientists are particularly concerned about the latest Indian strain is because of its higher transmissibility. Even if it had the same morbidity and mortality profile, being mire transmissible raises the numbers game.

Genome sequencing. Also not being nasty, but if you do not know that basic information then I suspect you do not have the knowledge to make any assessment of whether this is anything to worry about.
beebopalola · 18/05/2021 12:37

The radio just announced that we have seven cases of the new strain here (Chelmsford) and the council are urging people to get tested.

I’m not sure if those cases are included in the map info as it was all a bit vague. Still low though. Would be good to know which age groups etc have tested positive and whether hospital admissions are going up in the areas where it is spreading

castemary · 18/05/2021 12:39

Children learn in school how to do DNA barcodes. Genomes are the sum total of an organisms DNA. Genome sequencing takes time and you need to be careful not to contaminate samples, but it is not difficult to do.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/05/2021 12:40

I can foresee the future and it tells me...I will be spending hours on this.

Gah!

Used the last three pictures on my phone instead of every other

Let's try again

So here's Bedford, (black outline)

In the first screenshot from April 10th. It's in Aylesbury Vale and Watford nearby.

On the 24th April it had seeded to a lot more areas including Bedford.

8th May it has seeded to more areas and the proportion of the cases in Bedford and other areas has gone up.

Cases are still very low, but the number of areas that the Indian variant has been found in is growing. (It's 86 now., was 48 last week.)

And the Indian variant's share of the cases in those areas is growing.

And the number of cases in those areas is generally up too
