So angry at the Government this evening

I’m SO mad. I haven’t been on this board for months and I was feeling really optimistic about life feeling like it was returning to normal.
It is criminal that they have let this variant in. It’s literally ground hog day. Playing politics with public health to do trade deals (because of bloody Brexit) with India.
I know there is hope that the vaccines will do there jobs but we shouldn’t be in this position. This wasn’t inevitable. Arggh so cross

@Thefourbells

You think the UK govt has done a fab job of managing covid? Are you delusional

I'm increasingly realising that the majority of the British public only hears the information it wants to hear and filters out the rest.

That's been apparent for a good few years now lol
MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 21:35

@Thefourbells

The scientists are not fear mongering. They are doing science.

If the government had done what the scientists told them from the start, we would be living a normal life now and would have been for some time.

It's a virus. It doesn't care about your mental health or your kids missing friends or the fact you haven't hugged your mum in a year.

If we just go ahead and open up and live our lives with no concern for variants life will be even less worth living than it currently is (I mean personally I don't quite buy all the hyperbole around that, but that's just me).

People don't want to hear it.

BTW I speak as someone who has been unable to work for the past year due to covid.

What has been said tonight by Whitty that makes you think we’re not doing as he suggests?

What science is being ignored or not done or however you put it

MmeLaraque · 14/05/2021 21:36

@Thefourbells

Go on... What do you mean by "close the f*ing borders properly!" ?

No international travellers unless UK citizens or essential workers. Met at airport by airport workers in full PPE, tested, transferred to government quarantine for the full ten days and tested again at the end. No exceptions.

UK citizens can bring a CV infection back with them.

So can essential workers.

No discriminating because CV doesn't discriminate.

There. Fixed that for you.

VaccineSticker · 14/05/2021 21:36

@MarshaBradyo this is the first time I mention this. It must have been someone else.
But yes it’s a defeatist attitude if we can’t sort out our land freight but would rather have a billion pound logistical nightmare of managing and running track trace test that half works. People and children isolating due to a positive case in their bubble, disruption after disruption but that’s okay because we can’t be bothered to manage our borders including our land freight and we are happy to leave all borders open wide with big wide arms.

Let’s give up and just whine about it.

Anything can be done if they want to make it happen.

So much for Britannia rule the world, taking back control with Brexit bla bla.... we can’t even take control of our own borders.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:36

I'm referring to the "we must live our lives" comments on this thread, not Chris Whitty, who I actually think has done a sterling job in a crap situation.

Wish I could say the same for our dear PM.

Dingleydel · 14/05/2021 21:36

MmeLaraque well NZ and Aus have managed. The U.K. government could make a good start by not giving people weeks of prior warning of the ‘new’ quarantine rules before hand, thus giving 1000s time to travel with no restrictions or testing. Stop the ridiculous exemptions for ‘delegates’. See the cock up last week with the G7 meeting. No foreign travel that is purely for holidays until we know if the vaccine is effective against the new variant.

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 21:36

He doesn't though as there would be loads of people complaining about more restrictions and not being able to travel. So whatever is done, someone is not happy. I agree, India should have been added to the list of red zones a lot sooner than it was, but not everyone does.

Blah blah indeed.

What’s your solution?

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:37

UK citizens can bring a CV infection back with them

That's literally the point of quarantine. Confused

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 21:38

@Thefourbells

Would be good if they could stop all the illegal immigrants as well, but they have been coming over in their hundreds daily.

It took six whole pages before someone started blaming foreigners, that must be a new record.

Oh please. I'm not blaming foreigners, just saying no point closing borders to legitimate travellers if you can't or won't control illegal immigrants.
SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 21:38

I'd say it's written all over Whittys face personally.

Benjispruce3 · 14/05/2021 21:38

India not even in G7, invited as guests of U.K. Unbelievable. Yet they got so many votes. Angry

MmeLaraque · 14/05/2021 21:39

Would be good if they could stop all the illegal immigrants as well, but they have been coming over in their hundreds daily.

You mean refugees. They're not illegals. The right to asylum is enshrined in international law. Do, please stop reading the Daily Fail and its ilk.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:39

He doesn't though as there would be loads of people complaining about more restrictions and not being able to travel

And? His job is to do what is best for the country in the long run, not please people. Indeed that's why he has cocked so much of this up, because he is trying to placate people.

ichundich · 14/05/2021 21:40

I am too, OP. Find it unbelievable that the easing of restrictions is going ahead on Monday as planned despite of all the concerning evidence. This way we're heading for yet another lockdown and our poor kids missing out on school again. We have followed all the rules; I've not seen my family for over a year, but it's just never-ending. I can't do this anymore.

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 21:40

No I don't. A true refugee doesn't travel through several safe countries to get to the one they think will be most cushy.

This will catch up with us in the autumn again. Fucking useless government. Too slow!!
Make the most of your summer everyone.

Deja vu.“

No, not deja vu at all. We did not have a very effective, widely taken up vaccine programme last summer. So far, current vaccines have been very effective against all variants. Moat epidemiologists believe they will be efficacious against the Indian variant too. Even if the efficacy is reduced, it will still be good. In the meantime, brilliant people are working on adapted vaccines which will be available by autumn.

Oh it didn't take long before the immigrant comments. There's enough of that on fucking Facebook

True.
DenisetheMenace · 14/05/2021 21:41

You think being a refugee is ever cushy? Bloody hell.

Bluntness100 · 14/05/2021 21:41

Another things is some reports say India varient 60% more transmissible than the Kent varient which overtook the original covid varient

This is all getting a bit silly. There is also reports saying it’s likely to be marginal. People need to calm down,

MmeLaraque · 14/05/2021 21:41

@Staffy1 Oh please. I'm not blaming foreigners, just saying no point closing borders to legitimate travellers if you can't or won't control illegal immigrants. WHo are these "illegal immigrants" you write of?

Go on. I'm most interested. ANyone claiming asylum is protected under International Law. So who are these illegal Immigrants you write about?

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:42

Moat epidemiologists believe they will be efficacious against the Indian variant too

Most epidemiologists are actually urging caution until we can prove that one way or the other.

Exactly. As is the right to continue on to another country.

My Dad did in the late 70s because he'd been told that his first wife and children were here and he was desperately trying to find them (they'd been separated while he was imprisoned under a dictatorship). As it turns out, his wife and eldest child had both been killed.
