So angry at the Government this evening

I’m SO mad. I haven’t been on this board for months and I was feeling really optimistic about life feeling like it was returning to normal.
It is criminal that they have let this variant in. It’s literally ground hog day. Playing politics with public health to do trade deals (because of bloody Brexit) with India.
I know there is hope that the vaccines will do there jobs but we shouldn’t be in this position. This wasn’t inevitable. Arggh so cross

Reading between the lines, didn't Chris Witty say that they expect the Indian variant to become the dominant one and overtake the Kent. So the next 4 weeks I'm guessing will give it more freedom to establish itself widely into population and that's how it'll become the dominant one“

If it isn’t putting people in hospital (which it isn’t) it really doesn’t matter how dominant or widespread it becomes.

Irma, until the first week of April the Indian government was telling its citizens that covid had been defeated. Life was normal there until the end of March. The govt had approved religious ceremonies, weddings, and funerals. People were travelling within India, workplaces had opened up, and schools were partially open.“

We have a very efficient national health service and vaccination programme. India does not.

Frequentflier · 16/05/2021 23:15

@DeniseTheMenace Yes I agree. I am not sure where I said otherwise? If your point is that India should have locked down,
I agree with that too. But poor countries can't lock down for months the way the UK can. Anyway am leaving this thread as we are all going around in circles.

Stop blaming the government.
Start blaming people who are too selfish
Countries whose governments acted more swiftly and decisively have seen better success in containing the virus.
While I don't disagree with the idea of personal responsibility and sensible behaviour, the state does and must have a duty in public health issues. Our government has massively dropped the ball here and it's extra-infuriating because a) they only did it so Johnson could make it look like we can have a gloriously successful post-Brexit Britain and b) being too slow to take proper measures has happened again and again since the start of the pandemic and they just do not learn.

Egghead81 · 17/05/2021 09:48

I don’t blame anyone. Not the government and not society for not strictly always following the rules.

It was an utterly unprecedented situation. Most tried their best. And now we are coming out the other side.

Moonme · 17/05/2021 16:04

@Egghead81 Good to see you on here Boris

I’m happy not “angry”

So all good my end. In fact had lunch with friends today. In a restaurant. Was heaven!

Newgirls · 17/05/2021 16:41

Alistair Campbell has said on Twitter he believes some flights from India were busy due to people being recruited to help with fruit picking. If that’s accurate what a mess. Brexit impact plus variant?!

I agree that most of us did our best.

Our hospital has just recruited 90 nurses from India.

To be fair they have all quarantined for 10 days, but I did think it was pretty bad timing and I did feel bad that our country is poaching medical staff from India when they probably need as many as they can over there at the moment!

sadperson16 · 17/05/2021 17:34

Indian nurses, coming here taking our jobs? Oh hang on,nobody wants to do it.

Newgirls · 17/05/2021 18:06

I’m grateful for nurses and fruit pickers.

I am angry about gov Brexit lies - clearly brits don’t want to or aren’t trained to do these jobs. Hospitality has a recruitment crisis too as so many people don’t want to work here now.

IloveJKRowling · 17/05/2021 18:12

God, that's awful. They need all the nurses they can get. Just awful we're recruiting them away right now.

If nurses were paid as much as MPs we wouldn't have a recruitment crisis. Tories are all about the free market until it comes to nurses it seems. Then they're all about artificially suppressing wages by whatever means possible.

It’s not awful

For some reason or another these Indian nurses actively want to work in this country.

Could be many many many reasons.

@Newgirls

Re fruit picking , A lot of those jobs are live in on site.

Poorer British people (who would be the people having to do these jobs) CANT do them due to living in social housing. They CANT LIVE AWAY from their rented flat for weeks/months because the flat would be classed as abandoned and they would lose the tenancy . And before you start with "well how would the HA know" ..........well firstly these three words........gas safety check.

Plus there is always the risk that some nosey neighbour (not unlike some of the posters on here) would report the flat as abandoned.

That does sound like a catch 22.
