So angry at the Government this evening

I’m SO mad. I haven’t been on this board for months and I was feeling really optimistic about life feeling like it was returning to normal.
It is criminal that they have let this variant in. It’s literally ground hog day. Playing politics with public health to do trade deals (because of bloody Brexit) with India.
I know there is hope that the vaccines will do there jobs but we shouldn’t be in this position. This wasn’t inevitable. Arggh so cross

I am more angry at the people who arrived from India and didnt quarantine.
You can't just rely on the public to do the right thing, unfortunately. The world doesn't work like that. There will always be selfish people who think it doesn't apply to them, or they're too much of an imposition. There's a big difference between 'guidance' and enforced rules.

Same with the Bolton pub goer last year who had a pub crawl after returning from Spain with symptoms of Covid and became a superspreader. He certainly wasn't quarantining and neither do most if it's not enforced.

The government have messed up. Again.^

I’m sorry I don’t agree. People need to take responsibility. We love in a democracy not a dictatorship. Can you imagine the utter outcry if people were forced by police to comply to the rules? It was not guidance - the quarantine policy was rules. People clearly did not comply. Some people are selfish and self centred and think they are above the rules - and this is the end result.

Maybe we should have gone down an Autralia/New Zealand type of policy - but I can only imagine the outcry on mn from people who will not be happy that they aren’t able to go on their holdiays.

@itsgettingwierd

The fact he just waffles when asked a direct question shows me he has no idea what he's doing or why he's done what he did.

The Indian variant for in because they didn't red list it soon enough and people are still queuing next to non red list people for hours.

Their incompetence over the most simple things is astonishing

You reckon it is incompetence??
lljkk · 14/05/2021 21:17

I sense all this anger is happening because people actually believed the roadmap and "opening up slowly" was a good recipe for some ideal of perfect safety.

I don't know why you were so naive. Will you be so naive next time? Did you not realise before how uncertain and unsustainable the control strategy and covid control philosophy is?

Posters are still craving this policy perfection. "Close the borders!" "Punish the covidiots!" "Shocking incompetence!" People have enthusiastically supported having their other freedoms taken away, so why not take away international travel too. I wonder how restricted posters would like road freight to become.

That's why sociologists are involved, I guess.

Watapalava · 14/05/2021 21:19

I was made up her didnt lockdown

I'm all for people now taking their own choices with the risks they make

I do not give one minute thought to covid so shall continue to live my life normally.

The reason India wasn't on red list earlier is because the strain wasn't identified as one of concern at that point (India health system is terrible so no comparisons can be made plus their covid rate and death rates even now are lower than ours were at our peak)

Personally i think the government have done a fab job of managing covid and wider society and keeping that balance - full lockdown only suits those with luxury of being at home paid. Not everyone has that option.

Id have preferred lockdowns but i'm now pleased we are taking personal responsibility and hope it continues.

Egghead81 · 14/05/2021 21:20

It must be so shit feeling so angry

I’m meeting friends for lunch on Sunday

And then next week... I’ve booked bloody everything for my children and I.... meals, bowling, laser quest.

Got a meal booked with friends too.

So much to look for are to and not to be angry about.

Watapalava · 14/05/2021 21:21

god i mean i would have preferred NO lockdowns

Egghead81 · 14/05/2021 21:21

I’m actually really quite happy when I think about it.

Cherrysherbet · 14/05/2021 21:22

This will catch up with us in the autumn again. Fucking useless government. Too slow!!

People in this country only respect enforced rules. If they can get away with it many will.

You can ask them to take responsibility all you like, but it's a failed policy.

Dingleydel · 14/05/2021 21:24

someone said the reason communities were vaccine hesitant is because they believe conspiracy theories. Intimating that its because they are thick.

But there is some truth to this and some conspiracies have been targeted at specific communities. It’s not suggesting people are ‘thick’. Lots of highly intelligent/educated people believe in anti vax conspiracies. An Oxford educated acquaintance sent me the ‘novaxforme’ website link the other day. I know highly intelligent published author who believes lots of it. There are all sorts of reasons people mistrust the vaccine but I think a lot of people are influenced by the anti vax stuff circulating because it plays on peoples fears and confounds those who don’t have medical backgrounds with its scientific sounding words.

Make the most of your summer everyone.

Deja vu.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. I do think it's because they are fed up of being manipulated. Had the government focused on educating and engaging, it may have worked out differently.
Doomsdayisstillcoming · 14/05/2021 21:26

Tories 4 life.

MmeLaraque · 14/05/2021 21:27

@Dingleydel

I agree. It feels like freedom is so close. I’ve no doubt that this new variant will be the cause of a third wave by the autumn. Close the f*ing borders properly!
If UK borders are closed "properly", what do you think that means?

Closed to business? Good luck buying any food product not grown/produced in the uk.

Closing borders completely would mean that nothing gets in or out. Nothing. No medical supplies, no food. Nothing. Go on... What do you mean by "close the f*ing borders properly!" ?

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:28

The scientists are not fear mongering. They are doing science.

If the government had done what the scientists told them from the start, we would be living a normal life now and would have been for some time.

It's a virus. It doesn't care about your mental health or your kids missing friends or the fact you haven't hugged your mum in a year.

If we just go ahead and open up and live our lives with no concern for variants life will be even less worth living than it currently is (I mean personally I don't quite buy all the hyperbole around that, but that's just me).

People don't want to hear it.

BTW I speak as someone who has been unable to work for the past year due to covid.

Livelovebehappy · 14/05/2021 21:29

Just close our bloody borders fgs and let no-one in or out. It’s not rocket science.

Dragongirl10 · 14/05/2021 21:30

I agree, just close our borders to all unecessary travel and strictly enforce the quarantine of the absolutely essential travellers.
How hard can it be?

MmeLaraque · 14/05/2021 21:30

You think the UK govt has done a fab job of managing covid? Are you delusional??

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:30

Go on... What do you mean by "close the f*ing borders properly!" ?

No international travellers unless UK citizens or essential workers. Met at airport by airport workers in full PPE, tested, transferred to government quarantine for the full ten days and tested again at the end. No exceptions.

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 21:30

Yes, but all the time the Indian variant has been known about there have still been people yelling at Boris to end the restrictions sooner as cases were going down on the whole until fairly recently. He can't win.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:31

You think the UK govt has done a fab job of managing covid? Are you delusional

I'm increasingly realising that the majority of the British public only hears the information it wants to hear and filters out the rest.

Let no one in or out?? You shittting? How are you going to eat? Where are your medical supplies coming from? Are you really this stupid?

Would be good if they could stop all the illegal immigrants as well, but they have been coming over in their hundreds daily.
Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:32

He can't win.

It isn't his job to "win", it's his job to act to prevent further lockdowns by getting an immediate lid on any variants.

That way he does win.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 21:33

Would be good if they could stop all the illegal immigrants as well, but they have been coming over in their hundreds daily.

It took six whole pages before someone started blaming foreigners, that must be a new record.
