What do we all think about 21st June date?

As it comes closer, my excitement for this date of lifted restrictions has started to turn into a big question mark - how can we go from the rule of six no no restrictions on meeting?
Is it realistic? I know no one can know, but what do people think? I have so many lovely dates pencilled into my calendar including children's birthdays and family weddings - will any of my pals have their big white July wedding?!

@Thewiseoneincognito sorry, that was for you

Thewiseoneincognito · 10/05/2021 13:33

@ringboobs

You don't know that we are 'far from over this'.

I think we (the UK, not the world) are very much over the worst. But in reality, neither of us really know.

Either the vaccines work or they don't - they won't work any less in winter. As it happens they do, but there will always be another variant lurking and frankly they'd be hard pushed to get a fully vaccinated family to stay away from each other for another Christmas.

I hope you are right but strongly suspect you could be very wrong I’m afraid. Only time will tell, as I said, we do not want the Indian variant taking off here and every step to prevent that from happening should be taken.

Did you have chance to read the link I posted by the WHO? It’s sobering reading when you consider we are about to start letting our guard down when cases have been detected here already. Vaxxed or not, the risk is still high.

ringboobs · 10/05/2021 13:39

@Thewiseoneincognito I'm not sure if you perhaps for some reason deep down want the worst to happen?

The WHO also said that the virus wasn't transmissible person to person so no, I didn't read your link.

AZ have said that they believe the vaccine to work against the Indian variant, plus they are developing boosters to cover off new variants.

ringboobs · 10/05/2021 13:39

@Thewiseoneincognito bonus point to you for getting in 'I'm afraid'

😂

Vaxxed or not, the risk is still high.

You're really addicted to this, aren't you?

The risk is not high if you have been 'vaxxed'. It just isn't.

None of the 'variants' which have been discovered thus far evade the vaccines. Some vaccines are less effective against some of them, but that's the norm with such matters. If the 'risk is still high' for vaccinated people, then what exactly is the point of vaccination?

You may hide under the bed trembling with fear of 'variants' as long as you wish. The rest of us are going to get back normal.

Sorry. Sadly. I'm afraid.

IrmaFayLear · 10/05/2021 14:21

I have posted before about bil and his doom-mongering.... and he is still at it.

Apparently “high up people” he knows are preparing for a third/fourth wave and “those in the know” are saying vaccines are ineffective.

He depresses the hell out of dh as bil (via zoom) shakes his head sadly at dh and says that he and sil know it’ll be at least five years before it’s safe to go out.

Would you like another lockdown?

I’m afraid that sadly only time will tell how this plays out, I hope you are right Iced. Sorry but I’m not hiding under the bed, I’m being pragmatic.
Thewiseoneincognito · 10/05/2021 14:33

@IrmaFayLear

Would you like another lockdown?
It’s irrelevant if I like them or not. I could find them the most magical wonderful moments ever or the most abysmal depressing catastrophes to hit our society in decades, how I feel about them will not manifest them either way. That’s not how this works.

Everyone must remember this is not over yet and our actions and behaviour in the coming months will dictate our future risk of lockdowns happening again. We are in a good position but all the hard work could be undone if careless mistakes are made.

IndiaMay · 10/05/2021 14:34

@Thewiseoneincognito "I'm afraid" that if the government ever tried to lock us down again they'd have a mighty hard time as everyone I know has realised this is ridiculous. There will be riots in the street, protests and people will open their businesses regardless if fun sponges like you try to wang on any longer about boring bloody covid. Stay in you're little hole if youre really that worried. The rest of us will crack on.

IcedPurple · 10/05/2021 14:38

Well yeah, nobody really knows how this is going to end up. We don't need you to remind us of that. And doom mongering over unknown 'variants' isn't being 'pragmatic'. Living life in constant fear of hypotheticals is the opposite of pragmatic.

Like I say, if according to you we're still at 'high risk' even if vaccinated, why did we bother spending billions on the vaccine project?

😆 riots?

😆 Fun sponges?

You made me chortle a little bit.

IrmaFayLear · 10/05/2021 14:45

Do you think the vaccination programme has been a waste of time and money? How long should restrictions last if there is no end in sight?

Thewiseoneincognito · 10/05/2021 14:53

@IrmaFayLear

The vaccination program is 1000% worth the money as long as it works, which current numbers are showing it IS working against Covid in its current form.

Personally I feel restrictions need to stay in place whilst our borders are still open, whilst countries around the world still have enormously high infection rates. Our numbers are low because our restrictions have worked and the vaccine is holding up, so far. As soon as we take our eye off the ball we risk reversing our progress.

BonnieDundee · 10/05/2021 15:01

Most people I know are seeing others in their own home. People won't comply any longer, no matter how much some might want it

@Schmetterling1

It’s a made up date that means nothing unless you trust Johnson.

Run off and ‘eat out to help out’ like you did last summer if you want but don’t moan about home schooling next winter.

Oh FFS, it wasn't Eat Out to Help Out that put us in the position we were in over Christmas and January. Even if we had stayed completely locked down last summer, the country still would have had a terrible time over winter, as happens every year even without Covid.

Are you not going to eat out or do other stuff all summer then?

What’s your plan stay inside and pretend it’s still lockdown

IndiaMay · 10/05/2021 16:45

Yes, riots www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-54310520 its already started with thousands of people protesting in april against restrictions all over major cities. We are the UK, we love a riot and a protest, especially in summer when the evenings are lighter and the weather better. There have been riots over a lot smaller things than having all our freedoms taken from us. People will not continue to take this. Not seeing family or friends, putting on hold major life events like weddings and wakes, having whether or not your children get an education decided on by how useful your job is deemed to society.

ARoseByAnyOtherNameIsStillAs · 10/05/2021 18:11

Cannot wait. More and more vaccinated now.
Unfriended a couple of nuts over their rants about vaccine being untested.... millions of people have had it with very few downsides. Ignoring the felt unwell for a few days since pretty minor. Life will get better and better

Millions weren't vaccinated last summer so completely different.

Don't be such a downer.
