What do we all think about 21st June date?

As it comes closer, my excitement for this date of lifted restrictions has started to turn into a big question mark - how can we go from the rule of six no no restrictions on meeting?
Is it realistic? I know no one can know, but what do people think? I have so many lovely dates pencilled into my calendar including children's birthdays and family weddings - will any of my pals have their big white July wedding?!

I'm conscious they'll still be people who won't be vaccinated so have no protection either because of age/ health reasons.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 09/05/2021 17:20

At the start supermarkets had one way system but come June all gone. Which made more sense. People just spent longer in there going round and round so the queues outside got bigger.

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 09/05/2021 17:21

It can't come quick enough!

The data has told us we should be opening up now but we shall be patient and wait.

I hate the pointless 1 way systems. Your going to catch Covid cos someone is walking past you in the opposite direction?! Its these low key control pointless restrictions that make my bloody boil.

Cant wait for Spain to become green, first flight booked straight away. Its madness how people think the borders should be closed due to strains, if this is the case, they would have to close indefinitely. They'll always be new strains, it's a virus, they mutate. There has been no variant so far that has been vaccine resistant.

The scare mongering will keep happening. Roll on 21st June for some normality back!

Letting the Indian variant spread in unvaccinated under 40s is a really bad idea that goes well beyond anyone's personal risk.

But some people seem to consider being able to have a Nandos and getting their nails done more important than public health.

People continue to sound like utterly unempathetic trolls when they try to pretend this is all it’s about. Hmm

The social, personal, economic implications of lockdown all passing you by I see.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 09/05/2021 17:41

I've not been anywhere during the pandemic where there were one way systems except for the vaccination centre and the polling station.

There haven't been queues outside shops for months except.

I hope my dentist opens its doors soon though, at the moment you can't just drop in to make an appointment (yes I could phone but much easier to walk in when I am passing).

looptheloopinahulahoop · 09/05/2021 17:41

except the post office but that's instead of inside.

Quaagars · 10/05/2021 00:12

Can't wait
Really looking forward to being able for overnight stays again, and kids can stay over at the grandparents as well Smile
Also meeting up with friends and family in bigger groups again!

India is massive

Their covid rate now as bad as it is is still lower than what ours was at our peak

Their population is massive hence the higher numbers

Their hospital provision is poorer than uk hence they were overwhelmed

But rate is better than we had so it’s no concern really

DO NOT reduce people wanting to come out of lockdown in this way. It shows you to be massively lacking in empathy if you seriously and truly cannot understand the mental effects that lockdown has had (and is having) on people. Not to mention the economic effects. You’re utterly heartless.

Or maybe some people have the intelligence to look beyond the latest scariant?

What are you going to do when you no longer get to call people 'selfish' for doing normal human activities which keep thousands of people in employment and help pay for essential services, including the NHS?

AIMummy · 10/05/2021 11:14

Prince William's birthday.

TruelyWonder · 10/05/2021 11:17

The vaccines all have evidence they will work against all know variants. That includes all the new ones like the India variant. AZ has preliminary evidence that it is effective against this one. Which means the others should be too.

So long as we keep jabbing people and their is not to much hesitancy. We will have first jabs in most the population before the India variant can e to much of a problem.

So people just need to get jabbed as soon as asked too and go get that second jab when they can too.

TruelyWonder · 10/05/2021 11:18

@AIMummy

Prince William's birthday.
Random 😂
AIMummy · 10/05/2021 11:30

TruelyWonder The OP did ask what we thought of June 21st and it was the first thing that popped up in my head 🤣.

MarshaBradyo · 10/05/2021 11:32

Great

A wedding to go to and other stuff

So nice to know it’s getting back to normal

How are people still posting this guff. How long do you want to stay inside for

There’ll always be a minority that post about this but it’s ridiculous and majority are ready to move on

IceandIndigo · 10/05/2021 11:52

I don't really understand how they can feel confident to remove all restrictions when there will still be loads of people who aren't fully vaccinated by that date. I would also feel more confident if the government had a proper plan for managing the borders - would like to see proper testing and isolation of arrivals from all destinations rather than the red-amber-green system which just seems completely token and open to abuse.

Thewiseoneincognito · 10/05/2021 11:58

Like others, I think they will go ahead with the June date however the numbers will be on their way back up by this point. We all need to hope and pray the Indian variant does NOT take off here otherwise it’ll be a fun summer but a lockdown winter, again.

We could be setting ourselves up to fail and the government need to be responsible in how the relaxing of restrictions is communicated, to avoid disappointment and defiance should they have to change again.

The WHO have already signalled vaccines may be ineffective against the Indian variant so let’s not get too complacent just yet, please!

No danger of that from you @Thewiseoneincognito!

XenoBitch · 10/05/2021 12:28

If doing those things was a danger to public health, then they would not be reopening. By all means, stay at home and be a martyr if you want. You wont get a medal for going above and beyond the measures.

The staff in restaurants and nail salons are surely glad to be getting a proper income again, instead of furlough and wondering if they will have a job to go back to.

ringboobs · 10/05/2021 13:05

@Thewiseoneincognito do you just lurk on the coronavirus topic waiting for optimistic threads so that you can swoop and tell us all how bad it's going to be?

Still waiting for that VE Day peak.

I tend to go wherever Marsha goes 😉🤫

I’m not telling you how bad it’s going to be, I’m saying please be cautious in presuming everything is fine and dandy. We are far from over this and sometimes the narratives in threads such as his can lead people to believe the threat has gone.

Re the VE Day peak you mentioned, I think you’ll find it contributed to the swell that built into the last wave we just had unless you missed the 4 month lockdown and Tiered restrictions leading up to it from our complacency during last summer 🤓

ringboobs · 10/05/2021 13:28

You don't know that we are 'far from over this'.

I think we (the UK, not the world) are very much over the worst. But in reality, neither of us really know.

Either the vaccines work or they don't - they won't work any less in winter. As it happens they do, but there will always be another variant lurking and frankly they'd be hard pushed to get a fully vaccinated family to stay away from each other for another Christmas.
