What do we all think about 21st June date?

As it comes closer, my excitement for this date of lifted restrictions has started to turn into a big question mark - how can we go from the rule of six no no restrictions on meeting?
Is it realistic? I know no one can know, but what do people think? I have so many lovely dates pencilled into my calendar including children's birthdays and family weddings - will any of my pals have their big white July wedding?!

I read on the Sky News app earlier that the head of the covid task force reckons we'll be free of covid by mid-august. I cant say I believe that though but I'm just a mere pleb who doesn't have the info they do so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

MusicMenu · 08/05/2021 16:45

All the time the vaccinations are effective it doesn't matter. Whatever the R number is, while most of the higher risk people have been vaccinated and with all adults offered a vaccine by the end of July, there's no reason to shut everything down. Some people will still get ill and die but it will be at "acceptable" levels, just like we accept some deaths from Chikcen Pox, measles and flu.

If there were a vaccine resistant strain it's game over, but there's no expectation that will happen.

User135644 · 08/05/2021 16:48

I just hope i've had a vaccine before then.,

lljkk · 08/05/2021 16:58

I doubt 21st June rules will make a single difference in my life.

Have they announced no quarantine for returning travellers from all countries on that date?

From what I read, no promises yet on 1m distance or encouragement to WFH or free to use as much public transport as we like or end of facemasks on buses, in taxis, in shops & schools or ability to use changing cubicles at swim pool or ...

Workyticket · 08/05/2021 17:01

I'm crossing everything. Meant to bw getting married in July after postponing from last summer

@megletthesecond

I won't be going indoors or doing anything that will contribute to numbers picking up again, we're not quite out of the woods yet. Last winter was grim and I want my dc's in school next winter. Not off because everyone decided to socialise indoors all summer and a mutation sneaked up on us.

I can't imagine what it must be like trusting Johnson.

Have fun with that 👍

You are worried that mixing indoors will still be too risky in summer, you don't want to do it. That's up to you but there's no need to be so sanctimonious about it.

I will be doing everything I can to make this the best summer ever for me and my family. Theme parks, museums, zoo's, restaurants, lots of day trips and wild evenings with friends. I want to do it ALL Grin

Oysterbabe · 08/05/2021 17:06

I'm really looking forward to it. I can't even be fucked to go out anywhere at the moment, stuck out in the cold.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 08/05/2021 17:09

I'm conflicted really.
I'm 53 and not due my second jab til after this date!

fabulousathome · 08/05/2021 17:11

I think people will still be "careful" for a long time.

Saying that, I've just booked a restaurant table for June 26th. I haven't been to a restaurant , even outside, since March 2020.

There are still around 2000 new cases announced on the news every day.

It’s a made up date that means nothing unless you trust Johnson.

Run off and ‘eat out to help out’ like you did last summer if you want but don’t moan about home schooling next winter.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/05/2021 17:24

Can't wait, bring it on. Life is currently utterly joyless.

PuppyMonkey · 08/05/2021 17:30

But surely even if we DO run off and eat out to help out this summer, it won’t be like last year because we’ve been vaccinated this year? Confused

Exactly

You can feel free to not socialise if you like but don’t expect the rest of us to do that same. I’m certainly not holding back on the off chance we might need restrictions later again. If we do, we do, I want a summer of fun.

Good luck with that Biscuit

I’d happily crack on and go back to normal tomorrow but I think it’s at best overly optimistic to imagine that the Tories are going to merrily hand back freedoms just because June arrives!

CarrieAntoinette · 08/05/2021 17:41

What is it about the government announcing a date in June that ends covid?

What are they doing that's going to stop the next wave hitting much like the last two?

Almost half the country's had no vaccine at all yet,

On June 21st it'll be about 40% (?) of the country that has had no vaccine at all

In most workplaces, and most schools, very few people will have had both doses.

The B16172 variant has been able to seed itself in 48 separate locations around the country in about 3 weeks during a lockdown so I'm sure we're all looking forward to seeing what it can do when we open everything up.

I feel like this too
TruelyWonder · 08/05/2021 17:50

I was really looking forwards to it and fairly confident it would be good timing. Getting more sceptical now.

PuppyMonkey · 08/05/2021 17:51

But Carrie, the people who are most vulnerable to the virus have had the vaccine. The cases may increase when we open but the people at risk are protected so they won’t be turning up at hospitals etc this time?

Wherediditgo · 08/05/2021 17:51

Just look at the figures. Deaths have dropped so low now. And we aren’t going for zero Covid. We were only supposed to stop the NHS from being overwhelmed, not stopping anyone from getting ill ever.

KurtWilde · 08/05/2021 17:52

Can't happen fast enough quite frankly. In fact I fail to see the purpose in waiting that long and would be fully in support of it being brought forward to today.

Hettylala · 08/05/2021 17:59

Bring it on I say. I can't wait to be inside a pub, having a gossip with friends over a glass of wine. Or not having the govt mandate how many people I can see. I'm looking forward to DS, hopefully, having a graduation ceremony, going on holiday abroad selfish person that I am and basically life just sparking joy again.
