Sorry to be morbid, but who are the people now dying of Covid 19 in the UK?

Surely all the ECV people (both in terms of age or medical issues) have had 2 vaccines by now and had had them 28 days ago?

I am quite perturbed that our death rates are still so high tbh.

The vaccine doesnt offer 100% protection, so some people can still die from covid or other illnesses while they have covid

Iknowtheanswer · 05/05/2021 19:36

Because some people who catch Covid are already very frail and unwell. Because some people have not been vaccinated. Because some people catch covid and them die of something else completely different within 28 days of the test and therefore count as a covid death.

HermioneWeasley · 05/05/2021 19:36

It’s people dying within 28 days of a positive Covid test, so dying “with” rather than necessarily “from”

Cornettoninja · 05/05/2021 19:37

The vaccines aren’t 100% effective and for some simply don’t work. Of those people there will always be people for whom covid will just overwhelms them. Just like flu or other minor infection most would recover from.

Fwiw I’m not sure how you’re interesting current rates as ‘high’??

Cornettoninja · 05/05/2021 19:38

Interesting = interpreting Hmm

The death rate is highly inaccurate though. People may not be dying of covid.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 05/05/2021 19:41

High, as in because of the aforementioned vaccine programme, I imagined that people now dying are very much younger and it still seems an alarmingly high figure.

Are they high? What are you comparing this to?

JemimaMuddledUp · 05/05/2021 19:42

I'm ECV and had my second vaccine last week (11 weeks after the first dose mid February). My DM, who is in her 70s, also had her second dose last week.

Keepingitreal14 · 05/05/2021 19:44

I’m ECV and only had my second vaccine on Friday. My kids have been back in school for weeks now so plenty of opportunity for them to bring it home between my first and second vaccines.

maryjosephandtheweedonkey · 05/05/2021 19:44

Not everyone will have chosen to have the vaccine either, although I’m guessing that’s a tiny minority. Are there any stats on uptake and how many have declined?

QuarantineQueen · 05/05/2021 19:45

ECV and only had my second dose last week too.

MaxNormal · 05/05/2021 19:46

Your definition of "high" is not the same as most people's.

Woodpecker22 · 05/05/2021 19:46

There were 27 covid deaths today which does not seem all that high to me. It has however been as low as 1 on one day in the last week. Given that there are still around 1200 people in hospital with covid I assume many caught it pre vaccination and may have been in hospital a while before they died.

People get flu vaccines and still die of flu you know Confused

I imagine the vast majority, if not all, are elderly and very frail people for who a stiff puff of wind could finish them off vaccine or not.

hellywelly3 · 05/05/2021 19:59

I’m in group 6 so clinical vulnerable, I’ve not had my second dose yet

HolmeH · 05/05/2021 20:00

It was 1 death on Monday because of the bank holiday & a pause in logging deaths. Not because there was a random dip & it’s now back up again!

My mum is ECV & had her second vaccine last week. ECV didn’t get called until Feb. 12 weeks is roughly 3 months so late April/May will be second doses.

I’ve had flu despite a flu vaccine. I didn’t die obviously but I was in hospital pretty poorly. One of those things. No vaccine is 100%..

Chicchicchicchiclana · 05/05/2021 20:01

I'm shocked at the ECV people who have only just had their 2nd dose! My mother is ECV and also over 80 and had her second dose on 11th January.

WeatherwaxLives · 05/05/2021 20:04

I'm CEV and had my second dose last week.

I'm CEV because I'm immune suppressed by medication. I've been told that because I'm immune suppressed it's likely I will not have had a strong immune response to the vaccine and the liklihood that it hasn't worked for me is high enough that adults that live with me have been bumped up the queue for vaccination to reduce the chance of them bringing it home to me.

I assume at least some of the people dying are people like me who are immune suppressed / compromised and the vaccine hasn't worked.

TruelyWonder · 05/05/2021 20:05

I know the take up is high but actually the small percentage left unvaccinated in each age range is still thousands of people. The take up in some communities that are also the most vulnerable is also much lower. This is getting better slowly but that has left vulnerable elderly and CEV in danger.

WeatherwaxLives · 05/05/2021 20:06

OP she's ahead because she's over 80, not because she is CEV - CEV was group 4, over 80s were group 1.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 05/05/2021 20:06

No need to give me the confused face! I think the deaths in the last month or two still exceed what I would have imagined after the vacvine programme. The first dose alone is supposed to offer very high protection - something like 90% with the second dose topping it up to 99% or something like that?

OP posts:
PuzzledObserver · 05/05/2021 20:06

The commitment was that groups 1-4, which includes ECV, would be offered their first dose by 15th Feb... and 12 weeks after that is 10th May, next Monday. Then add 3 weeks for 2nd dose to reach full effect = 2nd June.

Bluntness100 · 05/05/2021 20:06

What do you mean still so high? The numbers are tiny in comparison to say flu deaths. Where an average of about a hundred people die every day. (Weighted average).

In addition if you drill down the people who got it were predominantly infected at the time of vaccination. And many died with Covid as opposed to because of it.

Honestly do some research

CEV are group 4 who were in the same group as the 70-74 year olds. My parents in that age group and my younger CEV friend had their first doses in the second half of January and their second in the first half of April. I think they were in the earlier parts of that group to be done
