Canada pauses AZ vaccines for under 55s (and says women most at risk)

Please tell me this isn’t something to worry about: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/30/canada-suspends-use-of-astrazeneca-covid-vaccine-for-those-under-55

Speaking as a woman in her 30s who was immunised 4 days ago (article tells us the risk is for young women 4 - 20 days after vaccination), I’m panicking now. Yes I know it’s rare but so is dying of Covid in my age group so I’m wondering if I’ve made a huge mistake.

By the way I’m very pro vaccine and leapt on the chance to get one. I’m just feeling so anxious now.

It's in the daily mail and on channel 4 news there could be a decision taken by the MHRA tomorrow

dividedwefall · 05/04/2021 19:47

Looks like MHRA are going to make a decision on banning this vaccine for under 30s tomorrow.

dividedwefall · 05/04/2021 19:47

Snap @Sebw !

Roonerspismed · 05/04/2021 19:50

Bit bloody slow.

And given there are cases in premenopausal women, the age range is too low too.

These uturns are not what the vaccine programme needs. “We have absolute faith in the AZ vaccine”.

Aye right you are then

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/04/2021 19:55

Is there any reason why the MHRA’s decision should be different from the EMA one?

Tealightsandd · 05/04/2021 20:12

I'm too cynical. MHRA potentially bans something people wouldn't be getting anyway due to supply limitations. Banned don't have enough stock because of an extremely rare potential side effect that's more commonly associated with covid itself. Perhaps I'm too suspicious.

PatchworkElmer · 05/04/2021 20:12

I had mine last Saturday. Very concerned about this. Wish I’d held off for Moderna.

Amount of supply?
HJ40 · 05/04/2021 20:16

Well if they ban it for under 30s, that just makes it even more upsetting and difficult for those of us 30-55 to know what to do for the best. There was so much hope for the vaccine, but now it just trying to work out which is the least-bad option. And I know my rational head says catching COVID would be far worse, but if there's sufficient concern to warrant a stop for under 30s then why not all pre menopausal women?

I've read this thread from the beginning and really appreciated the thoroughness of comments, from @CovoidOfAllHumanity in particular, but if this news is correct and announced tomorrow, I think I might actually cry. I just want some semblance of life back. I have two children under three, I need to be present for them.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/04/2021 20:25

I’m fully prepared to eat my own hat if the MHRA say anything other than the benefits of vaccinating outweigh the risks. The fact that we’ve now found cases in the U.K. that we could have guessed were there doesn’t really change the picture from the information that the EMA had when they said it was fine to continue vaccinating all age groups.

mumsneedwine · 05/04/2021 20:31

Hope they make it very clear what those under 30s who have had one dose should now do. DD is due to get 2nd on Friday and is on wards every day. Should be her choice I think.

I hope you’re right. Also 20s will be vaccinated by June / July? If so by then j&j or Novavax should be as well in rhe pipeline of available vaccines. Leaving moderna and az for those 30+.
Januaryissodull · 05/04/2021 20:34

I'm early 30s and she my second jab in a matter of days.

This really does not fill me with confidence.

Username198 · 05/04/2021 20:43

I’m 31, if I was anxious about having the vaccine before I’m even more so now. Would be good to know why 30 is the cut off.

Tealightsandd · 05/04/2021 20:44

Do we know yet how many covid patients have had these clots? Also were the cases potentially linked to vaccine, definitely checked for covid?

nordica · 05/04/2021 20:48

Would they have enough other vaccines for all of us under 50s before late summer? The Moderna order was for 17 million doses so that's 8.5 million people (and only 500 000 coming this month). Eventually Novavax and Janssen will be available but it's a long wait and we don't know if they have similar issues? Feeling really mixed about it, and doesn't help my native country (I live in the UK but wasn't born here) is not giving AZ to younger people and I trust them more than I trust the UK authorities...

Mumtwoboys90 · 05/04/2021 20:50

i dont think i can go through with my second AZ vaccine after all this stress i wonder what happens then if you choose not tp have it or they do suspend it

Boringlynormal · 05/04/2021 20:52

What?! Under 30s?! If the cases in the U.K. have predominantly been under 30s then that’s a) a REALLY clear pattern not the ‘no particular pattern’ they mentioned and b) A much much higher risk than previously stated as out of that 18.1 million vaccinated I doubt that many were under 30.

I’m upper mid 30s and if it’s not safe for people below 30 I doubt it’s safe for me.

where is the under 30s thing coming from?

Tealightsandd · 05/04/2021 20:53

@Mumtwoboys90

where is the under 30s thing coming from?
Probably Facebook.
Boringlynormal · 05/04/2021 20:54

@Mumtwoboys90 I’m the same. Unless there’s some huge clarity I don’t think I can take my second dose. I’m actually really getting upset about it. Firstly that I’m going through this stress and secondly that I feel cheated out of a vaccine now as it’s not like I can just go have a different one as the combination of vaccines hasn’t been robustly tested either. So I’m then partly vaccinated? Just great. I leapt at this vaccine. I wanted to be safe. I feel so stupid.

@Boringlynormal
exactly it doesnt make any sense! we need to know all the ages and sex of people who this has affected..to me under 30s is such a weird cut off im early 30s and this just makes me feel no better at all

Mumtwoboys90 · 05/04/2021 20:57

@Boringlynormal literally the exact same as you and i purposefully didnt do any research as i knew it would make the decision harder and i would agonise over it as i always do and just tried to trust that it wouldnt be given if it wasnt safe but my god i wish i had now Sad

Did anyone develop this reaction after second vaccine having been fine with first though? I would assume that if you didn't get it after the first (which is when the current cases did) then your immune system is fine with it and you are not one of those susceptible?

It was on Channel 4 News just now
