Vaccines: Refusers versus aspirers

PuzzledObserver · 27/03/2021 16:35

I sometimes think I'm living in an alternate universe.

There are all these posts over social media, including mumsnet, about how vaccines are evil, they are all sent to kill us, DO YOUR RESEARCH you sheeple.

And then there are all the other posts about so relieved my Mum had her vaccine, it's not fair that I/my mum/my friend who is CEV hasn't got their vaccine yet and the EU are trying to shaft us.

It's a bit disconcerting, if I'm honest. But then I look at the takeup numbers, and it does seem that those who want the vaccine are the large majority.

So, which are you?

  1. Had it/will have it when invited
  2. No way, Jose
  3. Mmmm.... still deliberating.

I'm a 1.

@lurker101 thanks, yes, Animal Aid, PETA and The Vegan Society have all issued similar statements. It's true that the actual ingredients that go into our arms are vegan (at least I think so) But the process of their creation is very much not vegan I believe. So I feel very distressed about taking it. I think Vegans are divided on the issue. If I was high risk, or led a high-risk lifestyle (with my occupation etc) I'd more readily accept the compromise. But, as it is, I'm tempted to hang on for the plant-based one if it comes.
Personal choice though. No judgement of the choice of others.

lurker101 · 29/03/2021 11:20

Thanks @WanderingFruitWonderer it’s always interesting to see others perspectives 😊

LilacsAndFreesias · 29/03/2021 11:27

I was desperate to have it and had the good fortune to turn 50 earlier this year, so managed to get it before the delays started. I dearly wish people in their 40s could have followed on straight after me. I would have been upset if I was late 40s and had read that 40s would be offered before Easter as the Telegraph reported, and then this retracted without the government really admitting that they'd tipped off the Borisograph and then had to go back on it

WanderingFruitWonderer · 29/03/2021 11:28

@RampantIvy yes, I try to be consistent. I avoid pharmaceutical meds totally where possible. Obviously, I'm able to currently, as I don't need any. I use natural herbs & spices and acupressure etc for minor things.
I'm aware that there may come a time when I have no choice but to take medication for something serious. But, for as much as I can, I try to live by my principles.
I also loathe big pharma as an industry generally, for all sorts of reasons. I don't want them to make money out of me...

WanderingFruitWonderer · 29/03/2021 11:31

Thank you @lurker101 for your respectful and kind response. Genuinely appreciated Smile

  1. Had mine, second one due in May and I didn't even think about it. DH is the same.

@dividedwefall

If I wasn't already sceptical, things like this twitter.com/i/status/1346896975531298817 make me even more determined to resist.

Tony Blair "In the end, vaccination will be your route to liberty"

Do people think this is benign or acceptable?

Quite laughable that people who don’t want to be vaccinated are using Tony Blair’s opinions as gospel. My choices aren’t governed by what he is saying.
MrsFezziwig · 29/03/2021 12:08

But I think it's great for everyone to do their own research.

Sadly, “doing your own research” doesn’t usually mean “I have spent hours trawling through impenetrable scientific papers which have already been scrutinised by eminent scientists who actually understand what they’re looking at”

RampantIvy · 29/03/2021 12:23

Mine neither

Frequentflier · 29/03/2021 12:43

I don't understand this "doing your own research" thing. Between me and DH, we have 4 degrees between us from some of the top universities in the world. None of them are in vaccine science. I can't fully understand most scientific papers. So I am listening to the experts, just as I do when I get surgery or buy a house or draft a will.

SpringTimeDream · 29/03/2021 13:01

I now unfriend and block the idiots that spread misinformation on social media. Use of the following 'do your research (on YouTube), 'sheeple', 'MSM don't tell you the vaccine causes X/Y/Z'..... now makes me think the person posting or using the term is a mindless idiot.....

Obviously there are people that are scared..... A for various reasons or B due to the bloody idiots that spread crap

LilacsAndFreesias · 29/03/2021 13:52

People seem to use the word research to mean "had a quick google" or "watched a video my neighbour put on Facebook"

dividedwefall · 29/03/2021 14:41

It's quite patronising to mock those who 'do their own research'.

So when the government, it's BIU or MSM is telling something you know doesn't add up or make sense, or changes their story or U-turns or even outright lies, you just go along with it? You don't delve further into the matter and see what's behind the story?

I pity you in that case. Although life must be a lot simpler and easier just going along with everything you are told and told to do, so I also envy you a bit.

I'm cynical. When I hear a government lie to me I want to know why.

Yes these tropes are wheeled out regularly to discredit anyone who questions the narrative.

As soon as you label someone 'The expert Karen from Facebook" you undermine what they are saying because it makes YOU feel uneasy.

roguetomato · 29/03/2021 14:49

"I'm cynical. When I hear a government lie to me I want to know why."

Did you find out why?

dividedwefall · 29/03/2021 14:56
This was posted yesterday and ignored by most (see my post above about ignoring inconsistencies in the narrative) and sneered at by the hardcore few.

When I do my own research I use a multitude of different search engines. If I see something I don't understand another tab open to search that bit. Newspaper and SM more tabs open to try and find the source.

How they animals have been treated is diabolical. Not only extracting the cold from them, but also the testing on the vaccine delivery system that has been ongoing since the 80's. Further searching from medical sites shows that testing on humans was being considered on humans around 2017/2018.

I am confused as hell about VIPIT which is the blood clotting thing. Some dispute it yet Ontario for example have given their healthcare practioners guidance.
