This just came up on my phone. I had the AZ vaccine 10 days ago. I'm concerned about the news of blood clotting issues.
@thekeatingfive you darent say much out and about unless to close friends 😪😪 people are vitriolic at anyone not seen enforcing " the rules " and like so many have abided to the absolute letter us included but we are at the mercy of this incompetent beyond reproach govt!!

I am so furious at the passport office. You must have a valid reasom to get a passport like how is that even legal ?? How is this ok ? Our freedoms just chipped away at. Fgs we cant have any self thought any more. Its actually frightening in the ROI now not to mention so so depressing. Its just awful.
What are you frightened of exactly? Not being able to go on holiday Confused

icdtap · 14/03/2021 22:43

Why do people assume people need a new passport to go on holiday??
It could be for business travel. It could be because they have relatives in another country and might need to travel in an emergency.
It could be for identification purposes - a passport is often needed for opening bank accounts.

If people are denied access to a passport that is heading into territory where what they are allowed to do is restricted.
No country should be demanding that people give a "valid reason" for wanting a passport.

minchinfin · 14/03/2021 22:48

Well in that case, educate the poster - give them a brief explanation

There's literally no point even trying on MN anymore. Anyone who does actually have some training or professional knowledge as a scientist/doctor/nurse/statistician/epidemiologist/virologist/surgeon/cardiac specialist/dietician/drug trial organiser etc gets told you're lying/you're making it up/you're not really a doctor/scientist .../you've got an agenda/you're just saying that to be mean etc. etc.

I remember when I was a kid back in the 1970s I was horrified to hear that governments in Eastern Europe and Russia prevented their citizens from leaving the countries. Yet now we're accepting the same thing in our own 'democratic' countries. Yes, I know it's a crisis situation, but having a passport and the ability to leave the country is a basic civil right. You shouldn't need to produce an arbitrary 'reason' to be 'alllowed' to exercise those rights.

I'm far from a libertarian, but I find some of these developments scary.

Radyward · 14/03/2021 23:24

@Aloethere absolutely not.i am upset at the with holding of passport or its renewal to irish citizens which is last time i looked a basic right of a countrys citizens to be issued with one.
I am no SF fan- far from it in fact . In my post i called out our inept govt. Which i hope will be reflected in themfinally being answerable to the people that put them there in the first place !!!

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/03/2021 23:25

Kaylasmum49 and others....

Please do not start taking aspirin or other blood thinners to mitigate a stroke risk from the vaccine - there are different types of strokes. The more fatal kind of stroke is actually caused by bleeding
My mum died of one whilst on aspirin to avoid the other kind. Do not take aspirin daily without discussing it with a gp.

Radyward · 14/03/2021 23:33

The govt ignoring the WHO/ EMA advice on AZ and going it alone is complete insanity and puts nphet on dangerous ground/jeopardises the roll out success/ peoples mental health not to mention livelihoods with LD extended AGAIN !!!
You can see people declining the vaccine as nphet yet again has the public terrified about AZ and pfizer in short short supply.
Like the whole world think they are closet vaccinologists !! Its insane. The public will have loss of confidence. What is the nphet agenda here ?? What is going on ?? Its disturbing the whole thing.

EasterIssland · 14/03/2021 23:38

I wish these countries who are stopping and damaging the image of the vaccine (I take investigation is needed but some of the comments done by politicians are damaging the image of this vaccine ) would donate them to covax where other countries would make use of them. Germany has only used 25% of this vaccine as people are refusing to have it. God knows what effect will this have ... and surprise pfizer didn’t have it despite the problems it’s had (the allergy and the elderlies dying in Norway)

MrsFezziwig · 15/03/2021 01:17

@icdtap
So how does it work then?

Data is gathered centrally about all types of untoward medical occurrences connected to the administration of any pharmaceutical product. You then start to build up a picture of a potential causal link between the occurrence and the product. In my opinion PP had got it backwards way on because they implied that it was only when a few cases of blood clots were found that they started looking haphazardly for more, whereas actually the yellow card system (or its European equivalents) should mean that any more cases would be picked up automatically.

There is evidence that under-reporting occurs (which is a whole other topic) but you might expect given its high profile nature that this might be less of an issue with the vaccination programme, particularly with potentially serious effects such as blood clots.

Blessex · 15/03/2021 06:43

Netherlands has just suspended use and my DH there is FURIOUS. He can see the politics being played out (being married to a Brit). Elections coming up and he is even considering voting far right as they are for coming out of the EU. He is utterly fed up with it all! He says why on earth won’t they look at the data from the U.K. We all know why.

PrimulaAuricula · 15/03/2021 06:51

I feel for any high risk people who catch Covid in the next few weeks who could have been protected by the vaccine but now won't be. They are being put at risk. We all know how nasty covid can be for higher risk groups.

Around 17 million people in the EU and UK have now received our vaccine, and the number of cases of blood clots reported in this group is lower than the hundreds of cases that would be expected among the general population," said Ann Taylor, the firm's chief medical officer.

RedcurrantPuff · 15/03/2021 07:28

@Wakeupin2022

Yes. So? Your point was still ridiculous.

It wasn't really. Az is a damaged brand in the EU as a whole. You can't be 1 EU when you chose and then individual member states at other points.

There has been a vast amount of misinformation from politicians and beaurocrats within the EU / EU member states.

I don't care if people in EU member states think its the shit vaccine or not. Ultimately you have other vaccines available to you.

But what about other countries (and I don't mean the Uk).

People are going to die because of the behaviour of policiticians in EU member states. Not once have I seen others condem them.

All EU politicians seem to want to do it blame the UK.

Why did ROI suspend AZ when there have been similar reactions with Pfizer?

This vaccine would not be so tarnished if it wasn't for people in the EU.

Completely agree

The EU/member states should be ashamed of how they’ve behaved in politicising this vaccine and now their people will suffer and die needlessly.

Dominica21 · 15/03/2021 07:35

Blessex Your husband is considering voting far right because of a vaccine Hmm

Radyward · 15/03/2021 07:46

This is the best advert ever to leave the EU and im saying that as a rural irish persom knowing full well the supports this country has had from the EU .omg the Netherlands next- its political this carry on . I mean didnt MM talk to the head of AZ not 48 hrs ago begging for vaccines. Nphet / cmo are power crazy and fame crazy at the cost of stressing out 2/3 of the population . The roll out is cooked now .i know so many self employed construction workers sitting at home with mortgages snd children to provide for. Its not right. The LD has just been kicked down the rd😪😪😪
.like how can " easing" start on april 5th now
Its just totally depressing

bumbleymummy · 15/03/2021 07:46

When non-EU countries have also stopped using the AZ vaccine pending investigations into blood clots. What political agenda do they have?

RedcurrantPuff · 15/03/2021 07:49

The vaccine has been through rigorous safety testing

Also even if - IF - it was a factor in blood clots, given the numbers, the risks are still likely to be a lot less than with Covid for most people. Over 1 in 1000 of the population has died with Covid!

bumbleymummy · 15/03/2021 07:57

Well, yes. But if there are a group of people who may be more likely to react badly to the vaccine then it’s important to identify them. Particularly when we move down to vaccinating the low risk groups where COVID is really not much of a risk at all.

This. Honestly. It's time to block this thread.

We divide by age group and it looks very different though. Why get vaccinated for something extremely unlikely to kill you?

My uncle got the Pfizer, he’s elderly, obese and has diabetes. It makes total sense for him.

It doesn’t make much sense for younger people that do not live with elderly family or work with vulnerable populations.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/03/2021 08:16

And that is why Covid won't be going anywhere folks!

Not my game and sod anyone else!

RedcurrantPuff · 15/03/2021 08:16

But the risk of Covid is still probably higher than the risk of side effects. I’m only in my 40a and the age related risk for me for dying of Covid is something like 1 in 700. Pretty low but it’ll be much less with a vaccine and even a 1 in 10000 risk of blood clots would be better. Plus a blood clot isn’t infectious and won’t overwhelm the hospitals.

Smallpox vaccine apparently had hideous side effects for some people, but it was still better than the risks of smallpox

Some people just want everything to be no risk ever. What with this and how wimpy people have been about getting it due to risk of feeling a bit crappy for a few days I really wonder if people actually do want all this to be over.

MRex · 15/03/2021 08:17

@UsedUpUsername - in all my life I've never had a time when I've known nobody pregnant, nor over 50, nor unwell with cancer / diabetes etc. Are you certain you know nobody like that and don't even come across them in shops / on the bus?

EasterIssland · 15/03/2021 08:18

@bumbleymummy

Only Thailand has stopped. Norway and Iceland aren’t Eu but are buying through them Thailand hadn’t even started and stopped it when the news came from Eu. Most of the countries that have stopped / halted are Eu
RedcurrantPuff · 15/03/2021 08:24

I don’t think you know what the point of vaccination is, @UsedUpUsername
