...I don’t want to be doom and gloom, but I think the virus will mutate to evade the vaccine - and potentially become more deadly. I think we will face a third wave.

Sounds more like a movie plot to me. Grin

Silverthorny just don’t worry until you have to, that’s all I’m saying

Angrymum22 · 11/03/2021 16:31

Correct me if I am wrong but mutations occur randomly, not in response to vaccines. If a mutation is advantageous then it will become a prominent variation. If it is not advantageous it will disappear.
You cannot cause a mutation to happen. I would dearly love my DS not to have inherited my sticky out ears but without genetically engineering the DNA I pass on it’s not possible. However if there has been a mutation of the DNA in the ovum I produced he may just have got lucky on the ear front.
I don’t know whether viruses can orchestrate DNA mutation to specific anti bodies. I stand to b e corrected. Bloody clever if they can!
@Totallyfedup1979 - you forgot the sand...
Sand! Have you gone mad?!

Grin
Oblomov21 · 11/03/2021 16:35

I don't agree. I don't think the third wave will be that bad.

Silverthorny · 11/03/2021 16:36

Nope Wink @Totallyfedup1979 it’s very useful, thinking of getting some myself.

Oh well in that case I’ll add it to my list!

Is there a minimum amount I’d need? Will a cup of sand do?

hamstersarse · 11/03/2021 16:38

There were 181 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test.

That is hugely massively better. I know you are probably the type who prefers to live with the worst case scenario constantly, but this is seriously not a problem.

A lot of people are going to have to learn Life again

Great post by @notrub

I don’t understand some of the rude comments to the OP on here. Much better to discuss imo.

Silverthorny · 11/03/2021 16:41

Gosh no! @Totallyfedup1979 - I’d say mine is the size of a football, despite speculation on it’s internal capacity. So enough to cover that.

You're both right and wrong as you contradicted yourself.

Mutations happen randomly - CORRECT
If a mutation is advantageous it will become prominent - CORRECT

Since if you have a mutation within a vaccinated population that can evade the vaccine, it is logically advantageous, the statement
"not in response to vaccines" is incorrect.

Totallyfedup1979 · 11/03/2021 16:44

Aw op, I’m only playing.

My husband always says ‘don’t meet trouble half way.’ So, I tend to think this sort of thing isn’t worth the worry.

I did enjoy the fun side of this thread though and you did make me laugh regarding the sand!

Footle · 11/03/2021 16:47

Another ODFOD with bells on.

Silverthorny · 11/03/2021 16:50

@notrub so - as we are in the early stages, how likely is it that - this is it - no mutations that evade. I personally think unlikely. And surely the vaccine can’t be adapted until the mutation arises?

Sadly I think you might be right!! Mind you then again given we're still on national lock down the amount of people trawling the beach and town where I live is a bloody joke!! Annoying thing is most of them don't live here they've travelled over for the day. Biggest clue to that is none of us locals would pay to park along the seafront!! The police also stopped a couple coming in from Hornsea and turned them back. Apparently they were coming for fish and chips. Last time I checked there were definitely fish and chip shops in Hornsea as well.

I think we’re going to be invaded by a race of giant space ants and enslaved in their underground honey mines. Just wanted to let everyone know.

Silverthorny · 11/03/2021 16:54

Thing is - I don’t want to bury my head. I want to know the pluses, the minuses - and make the best decision. A couple of weeks ago - I thought great!! I’m off to Hyde Park in the summer!! Now - I’m not so sure. I desperately don’t want to make people feel bad. It’s a horrible situation that we are in. But if we don’t address the full picture, our mental health will suffer over an increasingly extended period. We don’t want that.

@Beebityboo

There's actually lots of talk in the scientific community about the virus not being able to mutate much further. If this is true vaccine redundancy isn't going to happen and so far every vaccine works against the new strains. These vaccines are miraculous and working better than anyone thought they would.
That's interesting. Do you have any links at all?

I'm quite happy to make the most of going out and seeing people when I can and if we have to go back to socially distancing I'll do that then.

I'm not going to spend the summer moping around about how it might get bad again - I don't see that helping anyone's mental health. But you know, if it makes you happy to be miserable...

Chuck in a couple of “I’m afraid”s and a “sorry” and that’s me sold.
Sleepthief · 11/03/2021 17:24

Well at least if we all die in the next wave we'll be spared totally baseless threads like this 🤷‍♀️

Porcupineintherough · 11/03/2021 17:28

In other breaking news the supercauldera under Yellowstone will be erupting any millennium now and one day the sun will go out. On a brighter note we'll have wiped ourselves off the face of the planet before these things happen so wont notice.
