Viruses mutate all the time. I'm hoping there won't be a third wave. I'm exhausted with it all. I work in a hospital and we are all praying the vaccination programme gives us some respite.

I'll be happy with a zombie apocalypse if Jeffrey Dean Morgan appears.

What exactly do you get out of posting stuff like this knowing full well that there’s a lot of posters on mumsnet with anxiety, or mental health issues who are only just clinging on.

There's actually lots of talk in the scientific community about the virus not being able to mutate much further. If this is true vaccine redundancy isn't going to happen and so far every vaccine works against the new strains. These vaccines are miraculous and working better than anyone thought they would.

Ouch ! Surely this person is allowed an opinion . Yes I'm not gullible enough to think trolls don't exist , but everyone is allowed to start a conversation without being jumped on so negatively .
Sage have actually said we need to be careful in the run up to winter so that we don't have a 3rd lockdown.
Germany has announced today that levels have risen over there.
And to the poster who asked ok if she was a friend of Chris Whitty , I for one wouldn't mind him as a friend of mine. I'd certainly listen to him if suddenly became concerned for those around him .

Or they’ll adapt the vaccine to incorporate the new mutations & give updated boosters which protect you (as much as the current vaccine does) so it’ll probably be fine...granted it’s not ideal but it’s quite as catastrophic as the ‘everybody dies’ narrative!

Is this based on your empirical study of the data, or your experience as a virologist. Or is it just some random crap you've come up with, based on precisely nothing, and serving no purpose but to cause stress and upset to people who are already pretty bloody fed up?

In all seriousness viruses mutate to become less deadly if anything. Viruses are living things, and like all living things, their overall aim is to survive. In order for viruses to do this they need a living host, because when the host dies the virus dies with it. So viruses want to be less deadly. That's why the 'best' viruses (scientifically speaking of the ones that meet their goals) are the likes of HIV and herpes (or zombie type of things, think walking dead). It's no in the viruses interests to get more deadly.

Viruses by their nature, need to keep its host alive to spread. If it's more deadly then the virus will be wiped out, which it doesn't want.

Yes it will mutate, but vaccines will keep up with it (or rather the scientists making it will!) as they do with the flu.

I agree with you! I told my family in june 2020 that the second wave will be from October and will start to peak in december and I was right. I think that we will be in another lockdown in the summer ( i truly hope not).
I keep on getting a sense thaf there will be a super mutation..
