Not surprising when you look at the Spanish Flu model. Need everyone to get those vaccines!

Chris Whitty is giving the public predicted information. SAGE predicted serious problems in the autumn/winter 2020 and they were right. The virus is endemic and we have to live with it. Vaccines are a massive boost, not a cure all and not everyone will be protected by the vaccine for various reasons. It's only fair we get the realistic info from the experts rather than the sugar coated fantasy.

AnyFucker · 09/03/2021 23:16

Probably terrified his time in the limelight is coming to an end

That is a ridiculous comment.

PrincessNutNuts · 10/03/2021 00:12

It's a bit embarrassing that Chris Whitty has to point out the obvious mathematical reality of "The vaccines are not 100% effective, and very far from 100% of people have had one" (paraphrasing) in order to counter the pressure from the maniac wing of the Tory party to open up fast again even though it goes really wrong for the country every time we listen to them.

Sunak's probably angling for another Eat Out To Spread Covid, and maybe bringing obvious crackpots such and Gupta and Heneghan into Number 10 again. The man literally kicked off the second wave.

And Baker won't have learned a thing from his insistence that we open up on the agreed date after the November lockdown even though the data didn't support it. So he's the one to blame for Christmas being cancelled, the January-February lockdown and 60,000 deaths.

It beggars belief that people who can't listen, can't learn and can't do basic maths are anywhere near the levers of power but here we are.

Their grubby paws are all over done of the biggest miss-steps in the pandemic and I hope it is all blown wide open one day.

@FrankieFalcone

What’s with the CW hate! Honestly!
Basic lack of intelligence
TheDogsMother · 10/03/2021 02:46

@southeastdweller Of course it's on the decline as we've been locked down since Christmas. That's what happens when we don't mix. We're hoping that when it increases again enough of us are vaccinated it's not a life threatening situation.

Circumlocutious · 10/03/2021 03:57

Yes, I’m sure Chris Whitty is enjoying his time in the ‘limelight’, such as being verbally abused in the street by covid deniers.

picknmix1984 · 10/03/2021 04:05

People slagging Chris Witty should stop and think where we would have been if we had left it to Boris , Laycock and Gove to make the decisions!

He's not saying anything we don't already know but unfortunately there are people in power with less brain cells than the average jo who he has to convince.

CKBJ · 10/03/2021 06:30

I think Witty is just doing his job saying it how it is. Far too many people including people in power think this has all gone away, vaccine programs going well, cases low etc. There is a risk the government will speed up the unlocking and he was really stating the obvious, something a lot of people don’t want to hear.

Perhaps not had the country locked down for a ridiculous amount of time, as education suffers, jobs are lost and the economy dies?

But people know we have to live with covid. Fine let's get on with it. But they cannot lock us up forever
peak2021 · 10/03/2021 06:56

As others have mentioned, there are those within the Conservative back benchers who want the re-opening of the economy sooner than the government plan, and I am sure his note of caution/realism was partly in view of that.

@Beaniecats had there been a prompt response and an understanding of the economy, the restrictions could have been for a shorter period of time and had less economic impact. If Michael Gove or Jeremy Hunt had become Prime Minister in 2019 I am sure the number of deaths and economic hardship would have been less.

You are not being locked up.

This sort of careful, scientific analysis is what we need on SAGE Hmm

Hollyhead · 10/03/2021 07:04

I think scientists should stop with the doom predictions before we’ve even reopened because I am a sensible person with a huge respect for them, but my instant response to any negative messaging now is ‘fuck off’.

Can't meet family, can't meet friends, no shops open, no cinema or anything really. Kids in and out of schools. Yeah it's great isn't it

Think many are saying this now thankfully
peak2021 · 10/03/2021 07:23

@Beaniecats compare the restrictions even at their greatest, with those in Italy or Spain (enforced by the military or quasi-military police). As Harry Hill noted a few weeks ago, it was not a lockdown.

Peppafrig · 10/03/2021 07:23

Would we rather he wasn’t truthful. Just because people don’t want to hear it doesn’t make it true. Sad thing was he said young people who haven’t yet been vaccinated so he expects those numbers to rise before June and July. Didn’t he also say not even vaccinated will be protected it’s not full proof so some of the deaths will come from there too.

I don't think 'my instant response to any negative messaging now is fuck off' is sensible.

You're saying because you can't emotionally deal with covid realities, senior scientists should lie.

That is quite odd. Lots of people are struggling to process it. Switch off the news, don't ask for the whole population to be lied to.

Well we are going the same way sleepwalking into a police state

nonono1 · 10/03/2021 08:16

Even when I'm jabbed I'm not heading off to restaurant's and the gym.

Why not? Confused Once I’ve had the jab I will be going about my life as normal, as far as restrictions allow.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/03/2021 08:20
@southeastdweller Did you watch the video? Or any of it?
They won't. What thewy will do, at most, is look him up and then come back and say, knowingly

"Bill Gates Foundation, mmmmm!"

It's a fear thing, I think! I don't understand it. It's too cmplicated. I took a position on it. Now I want out!

Same withthe "It's a police state" twonks! Uber simplistic take on what is happening, completely ingoring the number of organisations and individuals with real knowledge and influence who are working behind the scenes because, well, they took a position on it...

Downthefarm · 10/03/2021 10:04

Are people saying this isnt true, or just that you don't like what he is saying? It seems to make sense to me. And as he says, it will be the younger people who are likely to drive any future surge, and probably the unvaccinated who will be most affected.
