What is the point in spending so much money and time on the vaccine if people are still screaming for lockdowns in winter or ‘rolling lockdowns’?

Do they suggest we just live this way forever?

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2021 09:35

@SuperbGorgonzola

Hair and beauty need to be open. They've been so badly affected through all of this.
That still doesn't make them a priority though.
BettysButtons · 22/02/2021 09:37

The furlough scheme runs to the end of April which gives us all a clue.

Where is this plan published? Where does it say schools are opening for sure?
I’m obviously not looking hard enough!

@studychick81

Why don't they just vaccinate teachers in the next two weeks to keep them happy and the unions happy? Then there wouldn't be so much opposition to schools reopening. As long as it's done after the CV and urgent groups 1-4.
It won’t keep them happy. Mutations Wink

In terms of economic priorities ‘hair and beauty’ are yours? Close contact? Yeah. That makes SO much sense Hmm
jomeow1 · 22/02/2021 09:42

@KatherineJaneway he said he hoped we’d get through to autumn, maybe winter without anyway. But we might need ‘some’ - that could mask wearing in shops and no events over 1000 people for all we know.

He didn’t say a winter lockdown.

BettyBoomerang · 22/02/2021 09:45

Cases have stalled in my area and are starting to show signs of rising. Now. In lockdown.

Cases arent the issue. Hospitalizations are. We didnt go into lockdown to bring down cases. We went into lockdown to stop the nhs being overwhelmed. We now need to adjust to the idea that there will always be cases and it will always go up and down. The vaccine should bring down the hospitalization numbers to a manageable level.
poppycat10 · 22/02/2021 09:54

According to the Times, colleges won't be opening until after Easter because they were the main driver of infection last time. That is so untrue I don't know where to start - 16-18 year olds were the age group with the smallest number of infections in December and my son's 6th form college had three known cases during the entire term (not sure how many students but would guess around 2000).

I just give up.

poppycat10 · 22/02/2021 09:55

Hairdressers are non essential in a bloody pandemic

Oh stop your virtue signalling nonsense, I doubt a single case was passed on in a salon after they reopened in the summer.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 22/02/2021 09:56

No point in Boris doing an announcement now

KatherineJaneway · 22/02/2021 09:57

@jomeow1

He said 'restrictions' which could take the form of a lockdown in fairness. I certainly hope not though!

OnlyTeaForMe · 22/02/2021 10:00

I think outdoor haircuts should become a thing.
Not so easy for colouring etc, but simple, wet cuts/barbering.

ChabuddyAldona · 22/02/2021 10:01

Why is the govt saying it will be led by data not dates...and then giving a load of dates? And why is Boris promising ‘no more lockdowns’.

It’s bonkers. Over promising and inevitably under delivering once again.

All happening too soon. Rates will soar again. Really looking forward to getting on a bus packed with school kids to go back to work in March, unvaccinated Hmm.

frumpety · 22/02/2021 10:02

I don't know why they didn't include teachers in the vaccine roll out, it would have made sense. If large numbers of teachers can't teach because they have to isolate or are unwell, schools won't be able to open or run at full capacity.
A phased return would have been more sensible, possibly a rota system, so kids in 3 days one week and 2 the next. One of the hardest things about them not being in school is the uncertainty, at least if you know what days they will be in for you have a better chance of planning, rather than this all in, out to isolate, in again , out again, all out , in again malarkey.
With the LFT testing, it's a very simple process and most secondary age children should be able to do it themselves. The wait for the results is going to be interesting, they showed a school hall on the news this morning with chairs clearly not 2 metres apart, to be used for LFT testing. If one person's test comes back positive does that mean everyone in the hall has to go home ?
The other thing that concerns me about LFT testing is, I hope these are not going to be treated as some sort of gold standard, they can be wrong, it is still important to isolate if you have symptoms even with a negative test. If you have symptoms and a negative LFT test you should still go for a PCR test.

ChabuddyAldona · 22/02/2021 10:02

For everyone looking forward to their August holidays...remember Christmas? Yep.

freckles20 · 22/02/2021 10:02

I really really do feel for hairdressers. I'm not sure why people feel they are safe though? When I go to the hairdresser I am sat very close to her for over 2 hours. Hairdressers spend most of their day very close to one client after another. How is this not risky.

MarshaBradyo · 22/02/2021 10:03

Why is the govt saying it will be led by data not dates...and then giving a load of dates?

Because four tests have to be met and nothing is fixed

Except for 8th March as that has met tests

DenisetheMenace · 22/02/2021 10:04

Downriver

For god's sake no. I can't bear another fuck up.”

I was beginning to feel cautiously optimistic with the PM’s talk of caution and being driven by data. Could actually see our youngest starting his university course in September, after nearly a year of doing his college work at home because of our family circumstances.
Seeing this, right back into anxiety mode again.
For the sake of not waiting until all 9 groups are vaccinated in April, we may well find ourselves back in the storm again.
It makes no sense at all.

Tiktokersmiracle · 22/02/2021 10:04

What about weddings?
Mine is late June, postponed from last June. I have 100 guests in a big church.
Would like to know where I stand

ChabuddyAldona · 22/02/2021 10:05

If nothing is fixed it’s completely ridiculous to start talking about August holidays. This ‘roadmap’ stuff is irresponsible.

Don’t bank on it but it’s a plan out.

We know what’s next which is good

Jkb84 · 22/02/2021 10:09

Everyone wants and needs different things so people are going to continue to be negatively impacted for a long time to come.
For me personally, having the kids back at school is a step forward for us and will be a big relief for me, although I will still be worried until I'm vaccinated, but I am group 6 so hopefully not much longer.
My husband and I aren't very sociable people so we aren't really desperate to see family and friends. But we are desperate to travel and visit attractions. That's the main thing that we want reinstated and it seems that's a long way off
