@MarshaBradyo

But we don’t know. We ‘knew’ it would all be over by 2021. We ‘knew’ we would be able to mix at Christmas.

I think it’s morally wrong, not to mention patronising, to keep giving these messages of certainty in an uncertain situation. You only have to read MN to see that as soon as one of these ‘roadmap’ signs is bandied about, people fix on to it as if it’s gospel. I don’t think that’s fair or responsible.

@freckles20

I really really do feel for hairdressers. I'm not sure why people feel they are safe though? When I go to the hairdresser I am sat very close to her for over 2 hours. Hairdressers spend most of their day very close to one client after another. How is this not risky.
It's all relative I guess. My hairdresser wears the same PPE as I do when I'm treating covid patients (paper mask, plastic pinny and gloves).

I watch her and her colleagues in the salon and their infection prevention, social distancing (bar hairdresser and client actually cutting time) and PPE is exemplary.

I feel far safer in the salon that I do at work or in most shops...

'Roadmap' rhymes with 'load of crap'.

If people listen to top messaging they’ll hear very quickly it’s dependent of four tests.

No one has implied certainty. People have to actually listen but there’s not much more you can do if they won’t.

@Kazzyhoward

Hairdressers are non essential in a bloody pandemic

It's essential for the hairdressers to get back to work, especially if they've fallen through Rishi's support cracks and ended up part of the 3 million excluded from support. They risk losing their savings, businesses and even their homes if they can't get back open soon.

It's all well and good for pensioners, public sector workers, and furloughed staff to sit back and watch the money roll in. But lots of workers, especially self employed, havn't been supported properly and NEED to get back to work.

@Kazzyhoward totally agree with you. What are we working towards? Govt seem to think sod it, the economy is ruined anyway, we're pot-committed now. Might as well ruin it into oblivion as long as Covid doesn't get anyone.

I could accept "caution" more easily if there was ANY mention of indoor mixing, scrapping masks and social distancing - the stuff that is actually strangling us. But looks like it'll be suitably vague, and plenty of caveats for the crumbs. This "roadmap" is truly terrible news for so many people.

SonnetForSpring · 22/02/2021 10:15

@MarshaBradyo

People hear what they want to hear. So or seems many have decided if all schools are back at once, then everything else must be ok to do to... that's the issue. The messaging goes from one extreme to the other. It seems the public wants black and white not shades of realistic grey.

ChabuddyAldona · 22/02/2021 10:16

I hope people do listen, @MarshaBradyo

But at Christmas so many people seemed to have the attitude of ‘well, we were told we could see our family, we’ve done our shopping and bade our plan, so Boris can piss off if he thinks we are cancelling now’.

I can see the same happening over holidays, meeting in groups etc this year. Expectation is built up, Boris gives his over confident bluster and we end up back in lockdown.

I’m not doom mongering, or at least I don’t mean to. I just wish there was a bit more honesty and calm, mature steering of this situation, rather than swinging from lockdown to ‘everyone out’ in a matter of weeks.

ChabuddyAldona · 22/02/2021 10:16

made our plans

Marino · 22/02/2021 10:16

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages

Doubt things like this will be allowed in a long time

God knows how I explain that to her. "You don't get the 100th birthday party you've been planning for years, we have no idea when you might be allowed one, and let's not talk about postponing because frankly you might be dead by the time this is all over - so you'll never see friends and family again. You'll get a card from the Queen, but you're not keen on the monarchy so that's no consolation".

Fuck that. Worst case scenario we'll have something in the garden - she's still in her own home.

Some people can't put their lives on hold, and I wouldn't blame you for one second to have a party regardless. I would do the exact same.
bendmeoverbackwards · 22/02/2021 10:17

Any news on driving lessons and tests?

Completely agree.
Roussette · 22/02/2021 10:18

This roadmap is totally driven by 6th May elections.

Pubs and restaurants will open just before this date to boost his election chances.

Let’s see what announcement is like

The plan is cautious in the first place with tests built in

Teardrop2021 · 22/02/2021 10:21

Where have you seen gyms for April? The latest I've seen this morning is from.the guardian is for this morning but won't know.for sure until the announcement.

Dartsplayer · 22/02/2021 10:24

Based on what I've read in the news so far this morning, lockdown 4 won't be far off :-(

Changedusernamehahaha · 22/02/2021 10:27

As said in DM they’re not worried about the inevitable surge in infections when schools reopen as long as NHS isn’t overwhelmed. That’s their concern.

olderthanilookapparently · 22/02/2021 10:28

How the hell do you operate an 'outdoor' restaurant in April in this country what happens when it tips it- not really workable so most restaurants will wait until they can open fully its not financially viable for most operators to open 'only outside' OK for tea and coffee kiosks but little else I fear

Labobo · 22/02/2021 10:28

@SpiderinaWingMirror

Hairdressers in May Fuck me. I'll look like Brian feckin May by then
Imagine what Brian May looks like now then!
Looks like the plans are now leaked.
Quartz2208 · 22/02/2021 10:28

If we end up in another lockdown then the vaccination programme was a waste of time and the pandemic will be here to stay forever

I don’t believe that vaccination looks to block transmission and case rates are falling even without vaccines

whenwillthemadnessend · 22/02/2021 10:30

Swimming prob fits with gyms

changi · 22/02/2021 10:31

Oh stop your virtue signalling nonsense, I doubt a single case was passed on in a salon after they reopened in the summer.

I've read similar doubts about schools, gyms, pubs, Christmas dinners etc.

It must have spread somehow.

Tightwad2020 · 22/02/2021 10:32

Everyone else, phased return to schools. Us, all in! We've been there, done that and it doesn't work. Why can't they see it has to be softly, softly to ensure we don't end up in another lockdown.

Because now we have a vaccine, and the highest priority groups i.e. those that fill ICU beds and put the NHS under strain are largely vaccinated? Because with the risk to the NHS receding, now the risks to children of depriving them of education and social contact can come into clearer focus and be addressed? Also the negative impact on parents, especially (still) mothers, of trying to juggle homeschooling and work?

I realise that there will probably be a rise in infections as we open up, but if those infections don't lead to increased serious disease, isn't it worth it?

FossilisedFanny · 22/02/2021 10:34

Pubs and restaurants will open just before this date to boost his election chances

I don’t think there’s anything on this earth that could boost his election chances , although he has to clutch at any straws he can I guess.
