This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4155962-10-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to discuss our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain or anything else along those lines - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a mind-blowing 16,875,536 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 32% (or 1 in every 3.1) of all UK adults.

Every day, hundreds of thousands more people are gaining excellent levels of protection against this sodding virus. So, let’s keep jab jab jabbing our way onwards, upwards and out of this. Covid, we’re coming for ya!!!

In my head I've been thinking of the total number of vaccines needed altogether and estimating it at somewhere just over 100 million for 1st and 2nd doses for all the consenting adults in the uk to have 2 jabs.

I know the number could hugely from that, but I'm still looking forward to hitting 25m total vaccines given and being a quarter of the way there.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 11/03/2021 16:40

Yes you are right 25 million would be around a quarter of are overall jabs. Hadn't thought of that

Paddy1234 · 11/03/2021 20:26

Had my second jab today ❤️

One of our local centers has put up a message about a big ramp up, next week with extended hours and jumping from 2 days x week to 5 days x week. Its exciting!

Yes!!! Thank you for sharing @OhYouBadBadKitten!

And we’re officially over 23 million, wahooo!

I’m very excited about the jabs bumping up over the next few days!

PuzzledObserver · 11/03/2021 22:49

I’ve got my eye on 26.5 million first jabs, which is basically half of all adults. Could be as soon as next weekend of this ramp up lives up to expectations

PigletJohn · 11/03/2021 23:54

I'm very pleased to see that UK is vaccinating a high proportion of the population, but there are billions of people in the world and not enough doses for them all.

Eventually there will be enough factories to churn them out fast enough, but I think it needs to be government sponsored, because a pharmaceutical co that builds a factory to produce 100 million doses a day will make itself redundant.

PigletJohn · 12/03/2021 00:16

GSK say they that in 2020, they sold 582 million doses of vaccines, and they are a major global supplier.

But the population of the world is 8 billion. And we probably need two doses each.

No wonder there is competition and squabbles over who can get the inadequate supply first.

it may turn rather ugly.

Novavax becomes latest vaccine to show high levels of efficacy

The Novavax vaccine, which will be produced in Teesside if approved, has been found to be more than 96% effective in protecting against the original strain of COVID-19.

It was also found to be 100% effective at preventing severe illness.

The UK has 60 million doses of the Novavax vaccine on order

buttery81 · 12/03/2021 12:51

Great news about the Nova vaccine @Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum! Does anyone know when they’re expected to make a final decision on the approval?

No but I hope soon- have a personal interest as I’m one or the 15k uk volunteers

Bordois · 12/03/2021 14:06

Today's numbers. Over 100k 2nd doses given!

16.8 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!
buttery81 · 12/03/2021 14:24

Thanks @Bordois and good news about the second doses exceeding 100k for the first time! They’re taking up a significant amount of capacity now, but hopefully first doses should be back up again with the ramp-up next week!

Another question... what do people expect the impact of schools going back to be on the numbers of cases? Will we start to see a rise again despite lockdown restrictions and the vaccine rollout and if so, how soon?

OP posts:
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/03/2021 14:24

With all the doses of vaccines the UK has ordered, we should have quite a few left over to give to COVAX:

Oxford/AstraZeneca: 100 million
GSK/Sanofi: 60 million
Novavox: 60 million
Valneva: 60 million
PfizerBioNTech: 40 million
Jannsen: 30 million
Moderna: 7 million

Frazzled2207 · 12/03/2021 14:27

also I think some orders could be converted to tweaked booster shots for next winter.

Bordois · 12/03/2021 14:33

Isn't it usually around the 10 day mark any significant increase in cases will show?

Few days in which to catch and then a few days to feel ill enough to test?

Eccle80 · 12/03/2021 16:14

I think there is already some schools impact because of lateral flows when you look at the breakdown of cases by test type, though wider spread to families etc won’t be evident for a few weeks I guess. But with more asymptomatic cases picked up then comparison to previous cases is mainly less meaningful.

buttery81 · 12/03/2021 16:18

Today’s official figures are in!

First dose: 23,314,525
Second dose: 1,445,078

Someone on another thread was saying there has been around 1000 positive LFT from schools a day. So maybe just mentally take them off for now. Gives us a rough idea.

That was me @Bordois this week every day there have been about 1000 LFT positives, far more than previously, which is presumably to do with the schools testing on return. This will calm down next week and is too early to be due to mixing in schools. I reckon 10 days- 2 weeks at least to see cases going up due to mixing in schools and quite possibly more as presumably virtually all the kids currently in school (as some sent home) will be (Currently) covid negative. If we're lucky we might not necessarily see a noticeable increase if cases still going down generally. My prediction/hope is that things will flatten off for a few weeks before heading down again.
