Someone was on Twitter asking this:

"I think I read that the U.K. trial showed 90% efficacy. Was the overall result reduced by the trials in Brazil and South Africa being affected by the new variants?"

Anyway know anything or have an opinion?

AfterEightAnyTime · 02/02/2021 18:13

I'm staying here.

@tobee

Just seen a headline saying Oxford may reduce transmission by 67%? Confused now!
That’s what Oxford university are reporting on Twitter as well....
TJ17 · 02/02/2021 18:26
This is amazing news!

I'm just so confused that there seems to be so much conflicting information.
I fell out with DM today who was saying she seen scientists on the news this morning saying the 12 week gap is too long and it won't work and she agrees.

Then you see this news article and think why and where is everyone seeing the bad news?!

TJ17 · 02/02/2021 18:28

Surely all the different reporters aren't reporting different info? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm so fed up of the media just scaring everybody with the "what ifs"

They are causing such terrible mental health problems it shouldn't be allowed!

Why can't they just wait until they have facts before spouting off?

Anyway sorry to be negative! Struggling today!

Pearl97 · 02/02/2021 18:29

The cases in South Africa are definitely dropping. there was a doctor on sky news yesterday from Durban saying so. They haven't started vaccinating.

tobee · 02/02/2021 18:41

Bog off is a very useful expression! Grin

tobee · 02/02/2021 18:43

Albert Bourla CEO of Pfizer said in that article I linked up to 42 days between Pfizer doses as that's what they've trialled.

So the maths is up to 6 weeks. Which isn't being widely reported.

I know it's crap. You just have to look at it as them trying to get you to click on stories as they are a business. The media reporting is definitely slanted differently outlet to outlet.

They want to keep churning out stories even though so much is not known still.

This research is about the AZ/oxford vaccine

I think the new research your DM is referring to is the cambridge research on the Pfizer.

I know the 12 week gap always had some evidence for the oxford. They said they couldn't see the Pfizer working differently. Not sure how valid the cambridge study. But it could change what we do with the Pfizer if thought to be correct. Think it probably depends how big the study.

That is interesting and probably why they believe 12 week like the oxford is best.

Yes why don't they tell the public these things.

tobee · 02/02/2021 18:55

Remember most journalists aren't scientists. They cherry pick quotes from scientists to sex up the headline. And fling about numbers and percentages and use terms like "confidence intervals" that most readers don't understand.

We're all trying to be virology detectives here. I mean I failed my biology o level fgs.

In 10 - 20 years I bet the stats will look quite different.

tobee · 02/02/2021 19:01

Sorry about this but what say all those fuckers on here (Mumsnet in general) who have endlessly confidently stated:-

"The vaccines don't stop transmission. Sorry!"

?

MadisonAvenue · 02/02/2021 19:02

There’s some amazing news coming through.

And there I was, just eating my spag bog, when my phone rang. It was a mobile number that I didn’t recognise and I fully expected to be asked about the accident I’d had through no fault of my own 🤪 but it was a receptionist from the GPs, calling from home, who has booked me and my 20 year old son in for our first vaccinations on Saturday evening.

tobee · 02/02/2021 19:04

Woop woop @MadisonAvenue !

Bettydot · 02/02/2021 19:04

I just wanted to say thank you for such a brilliant thread. I was feeling really overwhelmed and it’s been great to read so much good news. I feel so much calmer thank you.

Treaclepie19 · 02/02/2021 19:07

Brilliant @MadisonAvenue! I'd advise against spag bog though 😜

MadisonAvenue · 02/02/2021 19:09

Bloody predictive text Treacle Probably preferable to my first attempt which I noticed as slag bol 😂

I’ve just posted the Sky news link posted above on the ‘Forcing vaccination’ thread - lots of nay-sayers on there!
Treaclepie19 · 02/02/2021 19:10

😂 it made me smile. Auto correct is the worst!

FourTeaFallOut · 02/02/2021 19:12

Brilliant news Madisonavenue!

Inastatus · 02/02/2021 19:12

And thank you @Wherediditgo for posting it and to all the other posters for the good news snippets today. Mucho appreciated!
