Endless Propaganda

Bewareoftheblob · 23/01/2021 17:36

I cannot believe the endless Covid propaganda on the news channels at the moment. There doesn't seem to be any challenge to the stay at home/don't kill Gran/crying nurses narrative at all.

I am pretty disgusted by the emotional manipulation and attempts at behaviour modification going on.

Or am I being unreasonable...

It's awful isn't it? Watching the Pembrokeshire murders and every 2nd advert is the look them in the eyes advert...

It's relentless.

The silencing of any alternative opinion is terrifying

This thread makes me sad

Remmy123 · 23/01/2021 18:12

I am fed up with it - there is no balance!!

How about all the millions that have had covid and barely had a sniffle.

Don't get a takeaway coffee you will kill someone
Don't send your child to nursery as it will send nursery workers to ICU
Don't see your loved ones for a year

Ridiculous!! I'm not saying it isn't real but where is the balance ffs

whataballbag · 23/01/2021 18:12

I have severe health anxiety and my mental health is shot to shit at the minute.

I think the government have pushed the deadliness of the virus (and I'm not saying it's not deadly, it most certainly is and I'm sure the 80,000+ families that have been affected would agree) but I think it's been pushed so much that when things do ease off people like me are still going to be absolutely terrified to leave the house.

I think the mental health services will be picking up the pieces of this for a long long time after its over.

There are conspiracy theorists spouting shit al over the internet...
Beaniecats · 23/01/2021 18:13

It is bad and it's not fair on people who are terrified by this fortunately majority can see it for what it is

Losing control of my choices in life makes me sadder 🤷‍♀️

They're loving the opportunity to use statistics to sound extra scary. Patrick Vallance said at the press conference that the chance of dying for a man in his 60s who contracts Covid was about 1% for the old variant and between 1.3% and 1.4% for the new. Fair enough. First you have to work out his chances of catching Covid and then apply his chances of dying, to get some sort of accurate picture of the danger. But of course the papers can shout loudly about the new variant being a whole one third more deadly.

AiryFairyMum · 23/01/2021 18:14

But what are these alternative views and how will they help people?

Beaniecats · 23/01/2021 18:15

@Candidamelena

Agree re trying to blackmail us emotionally. Why should Young healthy people’s lives be curtailed for the sake of a virus that kills barely anyone apart from the over 80s. Why can’t people be trusted to take responsibility and use their common sense ? I wouldn’t be surprised if the so called patients in the new ad were just actors.
Agree with you
BasiliskEgg · 23/01/2021 18:15

What silencing? You can't move on this forum for posters who are anti lockdown (nor for those who think lockdown should last forever).

Remmy123 · 23/01/2021 18:15

@whataballbag yes that is my worry for people with MH issues.

Theunamedcat · 23/01/2021 18:15

@Emmie2021

The world has gone mad - news reports calling a 98 year old in a care home dying a tragedy
For their family im sure it is a tragedy
StormcloakNord · 23/01/2021 18:16

I do wonder why there hasn't been any kind of reporting on the negative effects of the lockdowns? It doesn't have to be lockdown bashing or disagreeing with lockdowns, which I understand are essential, but wouldn't some widespread media coverage on the increase of suicides, mental health crises', how kids are affected, how the economy has been shot to shit.

Just some kind of balance would be nice not the constant, ram-down-your-throat propaganda that's going on

AlwaysLatte · 23/01/2021 18:16

People need to keep being reminded because a large number of selfish people are ignoring the rules. Look at the parties reported this weekend. And the number of people out and about.

BasiliskEgg · 23/01/2021 18:17

I should think its not so much that they died but that they probably died alone without family present, sometimes after months of isolation, no? Wouldn't you say that was tragic or is that OK with you?

whataballbag · 23/01/2021 18:17
@whataballbag yes that is my worry for people with MH issues.
It's terrifying. I can quite honestly say I have never felt so mentally exhausted. Every day is just waiting for the next covid related panic.

gasgig · 23/01/2021 18:18

if you bend the rules, people will die..."

I heard this & that what BS.

IcedPurple · 23/01/2021 18:18

The only reason you could know they were 'out and about' - which is allowed - is if you too were 'out and about'.
BasiliskEgg · 23/01/2021 18:18

Do you really think if people are having parties that a shit advert is going to make them reconsider?

Public health messaging has always been shite. You only have to look at the obesity crisis to know that. People aren't obese because they don't understand it's bad for you or don't realise that broccoli is good for you. So you can bleat about healthy eating and portion size all you want but don't expect it to make a difference.

Remmy123 · 23/01/2021 18:19

@Theunamedcat wouid it be a tragedy if that person died of the flu? Wouid it be news?

TheKeatingFive · 23/01/2021 18:20

For their family im sure it is a tragedy

Naturally, but calling it out as a tragedy on national tv?

In any year, a 98 year olds dying in a nursing homes would be a fairly expected event.

gasgig · 23/01/2021 18:20

They try & get compliance through fear which makes sense but so many people seem terrified hence bleaching the shopping threads.

BasiliskEgg · 23/01/2021 18:20

wouid it be a tragedy if that person died of the flu? Wouid it be news?

Again, yes it would be if they were barred from having anyone with them in their dying moments after not having having loved ones or been outside for months.
